Although I don't watch a lot of TV I do now and again succumb to old gems like Simpsons/Family guy/Futurama from late 90s/early 2000s.

I actually thought of this very thing a couple years ago when watching an old episode of Futurama. Basically Bender was going to be written off a wrestling show he was on, so they completely changed his persona from 'Bender the offender' to a cross dressing sissy tranny named 'The Gender Bender' and all the humorous tropes that go with it.





I remember watching this, chuckling, and thinking how in a short decade you went from openly being able to mock these sort of things, to having a mob at your door demanding trial by fire because you showed a woman/minority/tranny who wasn't the best at everything ever.

This thread has turned into a gold mine of nostalgia. Where's my f'ing time machine. And the J.Peterson interview - that interviewer had no clue what to do with the questions posed, it's painful to watch; he was completely outmatched and JP knew it. His facial expressions are full of boredom and derision. And JP is right: high heels serve no other purpose. They are completely useless in any other capacity except to accentuate a woman's figure. The only woman I've ever seen that could still move effortlessly in heels was Tina Turner.

I have actual memories of a world in which the big worry among adults was whether the name of the rock band KISS stood for "Knights In Satan's Service."

And yet no one seemed to notice (or care) that one of the most popular songs on one of their platinum-selling albums was a lustful ode to an underage girl. Sample lyric:

Chris Lilley was a popular comedian in Australia up until very recently, who despite being a white male got away with parodying nearly every demographic group (even donning black face to impersonate an African-American rapper). A couple of examples:

From what I've gathered if you posted any of those "racist" videos on this very forum as little as 3 or 4 years ago then you'd be instabanned.

Every group has their preferred targets and their personal triggers.

The rules used to be "whatever makes you laugh".



Then it was "whatever makes you laugh, except that.



Then everyone decided "well if they get their exemption then I get my exemption". Everyone except you-know-who of course.

People like to pretend that their own personal protections against free speech are for the greater good of society but the dirty little reality of the matter is that the ability to censor people from making fun of you is a powerful status symbol that used to be reserved for nobility and royalty. Freedom of speech was supposed to curb that and for a long time nobody was beyond ridicule, even (or especially) the President of the most powerful nation on earth. But once you protect one group from ridicule then it's no surprise that everyone else wants their own little emotional fiefdom where they can also be treated with the deference once afforded to the aristocracy.

Just one of a thousand reasons that you can't put one of these(*) next to "Freedom of speech". The (*) will always metastasize as predictably and fatally as cancer.

Personally I've always loved wartime cartoons.





God knows what kind of pathetic propaganda we'd be faced with if we went to war with a non-white nation these days.

Good thread, and I'm surprised some of these clips are still on youtube, only a matter of time. But thought I'd quickly address this sentence. I can't help but see the early levels of the brainwashing in that clip.

On the surface it's making fun of people who violate the sexual social norm: a man dressing in pink, a woman wearing army boots. But they're not the butt of the joke. The butt of the joke is the wrestling audience, who are so worked up over a costume that they're screaming for blood. It's implied that blue collar America is too stupid to explain why Bender dressing in pink is upsetting - that they really don't have a good reason for it, it's just blind prejudice - there's nothing wrong with him being the Gender Bender, the 'evil' in this situation is the cynical corporation using gays as a punching bag to rile up the dumb masses.

(Read: the evil republicans riling up the dumb masses over Muh Bible to secure a permanent voting block.)

Okay, so what's the alternative? What do I want to see? Picking on gays and trannies as the butts of every joke? No, that's just an earlier step in the process. You have to smash both sides of the Hegelian dialectic to get out of it, not pine for the previous step.

I miss our cutlure's ability to incorporate those who don't fit perfectly into norms. These days, cultural historians obsess over whether Leonardo DaVinci was gay, or whom Oscar Wilde was sleeping with; how about admiration and acknowledgement of the dandy? It's an interesting phenomenon, seeing a man pay as much attention to his wardrobe as a woman, but in a distinctly masculine manner. This is a consistent male archetype, throughout history, that got rejected and pushed to the fringes in cookie-cutter 1950s society. Then, by pushing them to the fringe they became the reactionary force to the mainstream (thesis, antithesis, synthesis); they became the dispersed and hard-to-find rebels, attacking the complacent and land-locked empire. Stonewall riots, gay rights, et cetera. Now we're entering the synthesis stage, and it turns out it's 8 year old kids in drag.

Give me Oscar Wilde. Give me a culture that sees the light of God in every human being, no matter how weird or atypical they are. Give me a world where a bisexual man can write a heart-rending story about Christ's sacrifice. Get me away from this land of homogeneity, lifestyle boxes, and forced compliance with the current agenda. Let modernism die.

I watched that a few days ago actually, great film. I found myself laughing heartily without holding back.

It's actually a very good satire on 80s yuppie culture. The traditional (white) rural dude wins out over the smarmy, sophisticated, but insincere New Yorker. Rich white girl choosing a traditional white man, who looks to be quite a lot older (edit: 18 years older in real life!). Did you know that the actors actually became a couple and had a kid together?
