Would like more details on what happened. I've never had any problems in Romania. Some of my Romanian friends are good friends with black basketball players there.

This is serious but an isolated incident. This shouldn't be tolerated from anyone.

Don't let this deter you from visiting Romania anymore than going to Texas because some Klansman dragged someone behind his truck.

It's difficult to get details, but from what I read, some Romanians attacked Chauncey Hardy in a bar because they wanted to get with his girlfriend. Racial, sexual jealousy, perhaps.

BTW, this happened in a southern Romanian city (Giurgiu)...not the capital, Bucharest.

I'm a brown dude and I was just in Romania and when I heard about this it didn't surprise me at all. Most Romanians are not racist, but there definitely are racist fuckturds in that country and when you mix alcohol and girls into the mix then it's pretty dangerous. This was the main reason I avoided rolling solo to nightclubs because it just takes one drunk racist fucker to ruin your night (or your life in this case). From what I've read this guy just tried to place his hat on a Romanian girl, and then her supposed boyfriend objected to it and punched him in the face and he hit his head hard on the floor. No way to know if race was involved, but if I bet it did.

In my case some Romanians thought I was a Roma/Gypsy. There was this bitch woman near the hostel I was staying at. Whenever I passed her street she would just give me this disgusting look and start yelling at me in Romanian. After this happened a few times I finally started yelling back, telling her to go fuck herself. She just kept yelling.

This was my first time in Eastern Europe, and I don't think I want to go back. Some people can be nice, but some people are still backwards as fuck and violent.

The black guy tried to hit on a girl who was her boyfriend by placing his cap on her head. The Romanian boyfriend got in one statistically unlikely punch that was the end. Crazy. The death is no less unfortunate but at least it wasn't a random attack.

Also, if you read what the Romanian police statements, then you will deduce that it was in fact a serious beating.

From all that I've read, it seems race was not a motivator here. It was a most regrettable and unfortunate incident.

To answer another posters statement, yes most Romanians are vehemently anti-Roma/Gypsy. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the vast majority or Romanians are not racist. Romania is in no way Russia in regards to race and I will be returning to Romania to enjoy it. I've never had any negative incidents in Romania due to my race.

This would not deter me from going to Romania.
Sounds like the dude overstepped his boundaries in a foreign territory, as a pro athlete he probably thought he was a celebrity and made the mistake of thinking the was back in the USA.

My little cousin just told me some story of his friend playing ball over there in a small town, girls would follow him around and were easy as pie. The problem being that the town he was in was very boring and there was nothing to do.

How dark are you? Light north indian dark or south indian/sri lankan dark? Do you think a darker Desi guy would get mistaken for a Roma?

Probably not. Most Romas are light skinned. The have the same skin tone as N Indians or lighter.

I am moderately brown, not super dark. Some Romas have pretty light skin, others can get really dark. But if you are southern Indian, like Tamil, I doubt they would think you're Roma. Most other Indians would pass as Romas, especially to a super racist Romanian who thinks anything brown like that is Roma.

And about the black bball player who died, it's worth noting that in alot of these ex-USSR countries people look at black people as sub-human. The vast majority of ppl will not express this in public, but underneath this is what many people think. So when this guy got attacked I wouldn't be surprised if they just beat him to a pulp because they didn't think of him as a human. Of course, we'll probably never know what really happened, so I guess its a moot point.

Romania is not an ex-Soviet country. It was part of the Warsaw Pact like Poland, East Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic but was never a 'Stan, Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine, or Estonia.

Nomadic, with all due respect bro, I'm in Bucharest right now and my impression is positive. I was just telling some friends, I feel there are no racial issues here. Sure, I'm a shade darker...but I don't see the 'notation' in their eyes. It's early, but it seems positive from that standpoint. My main observation is actually more along the lines of how sketchy everyone seems. It 'seems' like everyone is tryin to take you for a ride out here.

You are right about FSU countries being xenophobic, and the old Communist Bloc countries do share similarities but on racial issues, they are much more accommodating.

When I was in Czech I ran into a few Roma Gypsy guys on the streets and Younger taxi driverss and they definitely looked like light skinned Indian Guys to me...I wouldn't be able to tell the difference and I considered myself well traveled so I doubt Romanians would either unfortunately.

With regard to dude that got killed out there...Sounds like an isolated incident and it wouldn't deter me from going to Romania at all. When I'm on the dance floor I'm always scoping out the scene to make sure a girl is single before approaching her and always have someone solid to roll with as a wing man. Where were his teammates at? In The Balkans I've never had a problem...Dudes were buying me drinks and befriending me...Like I said before this is definitely an isolated incident.

As my friends said, the dude went to some questionable club, danced with a chick and pissed off some dude who jabbed him. He felt down, hit the floor with his head very hard, and went straight to coma, then died. Sad story, but it is more of "shit happens". No indication of being racially motivated or being beaten by the mob either. This was allegedly the report from the eye-witness, and so far matches the facts. There is no way the person who is getting beaten by the mob would end up with only having head injuries and broken skull.
