Georgia (EE) does this at some of the more fashionable clubs, using facial recognition software. It's also used to refuse people. Basically you have to look into a camera and then get told whether you're 'in' or not. They say that it's so any trouble makers / previously banned don't get back in, pretty sure it's a combination of snobby door policy (often with good cause tbf) and general door management.

As has already been said, this has been around in Australia since at least the mid 2000's.
IMO it's correlated to trouble spots, places that get a lot of fights or drug use. If I go to a place that scans my ID and only has plastic "glasses" then I know to keep my wits about me.

Thankfully I don't frequent such places and you don't see it at nicer bars or clubs.


It's not something you ever see in Malaysia or other SEA countries.
