Slightly trolly (yet true) title. But I've been reading up on Neanderthals lately, and it's an interesting topic.

Europeans have the highest Neanderthal admixture. It's also present in Asia to a lesser extent. And sub-saharan Africa has none.

I had always had a conception of Neanderthals as rather dunce creatures, who were evolutionary unfit and killed off by the more intelligent homo sapien.

But upon looking into to it, that wasn't so. They had larger cranial capacities than modern humans, so were likely smarter. They were also stronger and had sturdier frames.

Turns out they weren't killed off in homo wars. They were just out-bred by the more populous/fertile homo sapiens. (Sound familiar?)

This is an interesting topic. The origin of our species is fascinating, but natural selection is not a politically correct process. Before anybody jumps on the bandwagon to accuse the op of race trolling, remember that he's looking for a discussion of the facts. He might be completely wrong and you might be able to prove this. But telling him to shut up because what he's saying doesn't feel nice to you can only lead to the suspicion that he's completely correct.

All joking aside (and there will be jokes! which I'm looking forward to), there might well be some truth in this.

Apart from the cerebral stuff, which I'm not so sure about, I've often wondered why the Worlds Strongest Man contestants/finalists are nearly all Scandinavian. I can only think of two black guys over the years; Mark Felix (unlucky with injuries) and 'Grizzy' Brown. Olympic weightlifting, shot-put, javelin, discus all seem to be the same, though things might be changing, I don't follow it much.

Could it be that residual Neanderthal dna gives northern Europeans the edge in Strength? But they lose out in speed? The Olympics has done a pretty good job of giving us a lot of data on this over the decades.

It's a tricky topic, but I'm sure the grown-ups on here can handle it. (don't prove me wrong!)

As an aside, I remember reading in 'Sapiens' (Yuval Noah Harari) how as well as bringing back the Woolly Mammoth (just a matter of time! Unlike Dinosaurs - won't happen), we are on the cusp of 'bringing back' Neanderthals if we so desire. Bringing them back might be the least we can do, considering we finished them off in the first place.

(By the way, while we discuss bringing back Neanderthals over various ethical committees etc, the Chinese will have already done it without asking anyone! Honestly, they will, and that's how science should be done in my opinion; by the seat of your pants! good for them).



Also, I know it's a tongue-in-cheek title, and while I'm confident of the incredible impact Europeans have had on the World (something I'm proud of, not ashamed of), there were undoubtedly times where much of the world considered us largely irrelevant. Genghis Khan didn't give two fucks about us for starters! Ancient China, much the same.

Apart from that, the game hasn't finished yet, and Islam (for example) might have the last word yet. It's all still to play for.

Makes sense. When you're hunting in an area where you're bogged down with snow and ice, I'd imagine that strength would be more important than speed. While the fellas on the savannahs would need either short busts of speed for ambush hunting or endurance for persistance hunting. (Olympic sprinters all have west African origins while the best marathon runners come from east Africa - perhaps this is a result of their ancestors hunting strategies)?

But I'd disagree that he didn't care about Europe. He was very keen to invade Europe, and the Mongol horde was on the outskirts of Vienna before he died.

Ancient China was never more than a regional power. In contrast, even tiny Euro nations like Portugal and the Netherlands had global empires.

I don't see any reason to be sheepish or modest about it. Europeans seem to have a unique predilection for ruling vast territories. No other people have come close, with the exception of the Mongols (who obviously had a heavy European admixture).

The Chinese are smart motherfuckers, and you can only look at their historical achievements with awe. I look at China's rise with despair, knowing that even though they don't have moral supremacy, they are intellectually superior and there is nothing anyone can do about it. This is a biological truth. If they had chosen to do so, they could have been a global superpower at the same time the Spanish and Portuguese asserted themselves in the world. Instead they chose to close themselves to the outside world towards the end of the Ming dynasty. Trumpian, those are all good points. Ruling an empire is one thing, but holding onto it is something else entirely.

I'm not widely read enough to come down yet on the importance and influence of Neanderthal dna in Europe's historical success, but if there is any truth to it, we will need every supposed advantage we have in the next few decades. Our history is glorious, but the real test is coming now! If we die out, it's because nature decreed it. If we contract and harden like a diamond and re-expand with a vengeance, it will also be because nature decreed it.

One important point regarding our ability to rule and work together etc; this was regarded as something specifically that Neanderthals didn't do! This is predominantly a Sapiens trait, and is the main reason we eliminated the 'loner' Neanderthals;

And that heavy European admixture of the Mongols is heavily dispytable. Never saw evidence of it anywhere. I would say the opposite, some Eastern Europeans have Mkngol admixture.

Ancient Persians (pre-Arab invasion) were essential a European people in the same vein as the Greeks. Also significant Neanderthal admixture in Central Asia so it just makes my point.

Many Mongols, including the great Khan, were described as having European - not asiatic features. There were Indo European speaking "white" tribes as east as China. Tocharians for example.

Survival of the fittests requires different traits in different environments. Sometimes fittest means strongest and sometimes it means smartest. And in some environments it simply means the most fertile.

Perhaps it's the Mongoloid admixture in both Eastern Europeans/Russians and Latin Americans that has given those two groups their current, much stronger resistance to soy.
