Fort Collins, CO is about the same distance from Denver but north, and is a nicer place all around IMO. Colorado Springs didn't impress me the couple times I went through.

*should be noted that CO as a whole has been getting slightly less gun friendly in recent years. Still pretty good on that front, but is no Arizona/Idaho/Wyoming etc.

Nice tip, thanks. Seems to have a lot more lakes than Colorado Springs and real estate prices and rent are comparable. How's the weather around those parts, winter and summer?

Yeah. I haven't been up there, but the reputation of Flagstaff is "poverty with a view" due to the limited job opportunities and wealthy buyers driving up the costs. Also, with the geography that brings the cooler weather comes the prospect of getting a hard freeze up to eight months a year. Interesting place to have access to on a long weekend, though.

Leonard's run his own "small town living" datasheet for a while, and I recall him drawing the distinction between "working towns" and "non-working towns".

The problem is that a lot of small town America, including small cities, has drifted into the latter category. What used to be inner city problems in the 1970s and 1980s are now increasingly defining small towns, instead. My own hometown in the lower midwest/mid-south not the least among them. My suspicion is that when opportunities thin out, men with a strong sense of duty to themselves and their families tend to bail out first. You see a rapid downward spiral as communities fall into the hands of less capable, lower-energy people. A sweet/feminine woman isn't necessarily enough compensation for living around that.

Point is, there's lots of nice small towns, but they're going to tend to be connected to larger economies that give the place a few different reasons for existing and keeps everybody on their feet. As soon as somebody tells you "this town lives off the [insert one-trick cash cow - prison, retirees, tourists, mines, college, oil rigs, factory]", it's a good sign that the place only barely coasts along and you're probably gonna have a bad time.

A bit too optimistic IMO. I've talked around with MAGA supporters and general consensus is pack your bags up and get out of the broke as a joke state altogether. Speculation includes raising taxes through retail purchases and property. Let's not even get started on "conscious socialism" uh I mean pensions as I've worked with people that have parents that are pissed about that issue. IOW the books has been cooked in IL for several decades and everything is going to blow within 10 years.

I even met a guy who sold property and is still in the research phase. Whether or not he made a profit or not is another story. This is coming from someone who at best follows the Donald Trump thread a couple times a day and I know very little about JB Pritzker and the new AG.

I personally am shooting for leaving IL in winter 2019 or spring 2020. I've done research on North Dakota, Idaho, etc. All we can do is prepare for the worst given how our current President is having a hard time prosecuting criminals like Clinton and Antifa.

Noting mosquitoes and other wildlife that can make existence miserable, I think it often pays to rent for a year in a given location before choosing to buy.

There are aspects of a location which only become apparent on a seasonal basis so people that have traveled through that area or even stayed there for months will not have a true grasp of what it's like to live there 365 days a year. Some places might seem idyllic yet no sooner do you take the for-sale sign down but you find out that the local law enforcement or councilors are total fuckwits, or that for the 3 summer months a year you have logging trucks constantly engine braking past your house from 5 in the morning to 6 at night.

If you can afford to re-sell and eat the loss then it's no big deal, but otherwise you might be better off shelling out rent for 12 months just to be sure.

The Front Range has true winter weather, including regular blizzards, 18" or greater snowfalls, and 1-2 below zero cold snaps per year. Also, you can have snow anywhere from September to May down on the plains. It can go longer in the mountains.

However, you can also have sunny, short sleeve shirt weather during every month of the year, nearly every week. The local joke is that you can experience all four seasons in a 24 hour period. This is basically true. It's happened this week.

The high frequency of sunny days helps even when it is cold. It's not like some places that are overcast and cold for months on end.

A noticeable drawback is that it's very dry. Your sinuses and lips will crack and bleed, and your skin will be dry too. This gets even worse if you buy a place in the mountains with an even higher altitude.

Seems like we are in a similar spot playing out in different regions in the world. Here in Spain things really took a dive South when the Soros sponsored Left took over. Major transformation of my city within only six months, so don't underestimate how quickly things can turn from iffy to bad to much much worse.

CO and UT are on the top of my list right now as beyond a political SHTF situation I'm also wary about the coming mini ice age and its implications over the next decade. CO has one major advantage which is that it's pretty easy to jump in a car and head further South should a major environmental catastrophe unfold which may lead to a large number of people freezing and starving to death.

But if gangs of orks are heading North to raid food storages then retrenchment of an organized community in the lower mountains may safe your life. I'm spit balling here as I'm not a gloom and doomster, but since all options are on the table it's worth considering.

We are on the same page when it comes to sun vs. cold. I can deal with the cold if it's sunny often enough. What I absolutely despise is cloudy/foggy weather for weeks on end with endless rain.

Dry skin is something I had a hard time with when I was in CA. I literally had to carry along a bottle of hand lotion wherever I went. It's not a deal killer however and it makes both the heat and the cold more bearable.

There is some truly beautiful country all around the Shawnee National Forest, with rolling hills perfect for hunting and fishing, top quality area for motorcycling, all that. It might not be easy to find a spot that has the amenities redpillage listed (at least outside of Marion/Carbondale) but I know a lot of folks from the Chicago area retire down around Lake of Egypt and build there.

Marion and especially Murphysboro are great candidates (prefer Murphysboro, but you gotta drive to Marion for Home Depot). Carbondale's got some nicer areas on the fringes, but in addition to SIU drawning in young Chicago hoodlums... there are a lot of halfway houses where relative to Carbondale's population a substantial number Chicago's criminals released from downstate prisons end up. The housing stock in Carbondale is also sad relative to the rest of the area because student rentals are such a dominant force in Carbondale's real estate market.

If you can do small towns Nashville and Pickneyville along IL-127 are just beautiful, but tiny. The towns along US-51 from I-64 to Carbondale tend to be of the sadder sort that collect halfway houses and other state garbage.

South of the Murphysboro-Carbondale-Marion line in deep south Illinois things get tricky because there are some majority minority settlements like Cairo scattered around. Among the lily white places some are acutely drug-sad and others not. Requires putting feet on the ground.

Someone noted the doctor being 4 hours away, well the flip side is that the law is usually also 4 hours away.

It's interesting though that my family members who do indeed live in such places (only 1.5 hours to nearest hospital though, they use helicopters for emergencies), have possibly the highest life expectancy in the country, with many living to 90 and beyond.

There is of course no preventing falling and hitting your head or having another kind of catastrophic illness. However, short of literally that, then rural living minimizes the risk of cancers, heart disease etc, which means the risk of blood clots etc are much less. I think people very seriously underestimate air pollution and radiation as a cause of disease.

Everyone's time is up anyway at some time.

The guy is a bit of a doom and gloomer but he delivers a lot of plausible evidence. Bear in mind that MSM does not report on any of this shit. He gets it from local contacts who send it his way and various scientific resources the rest of us either don't bother to look at or wouldn't know how to interpret.

He may be completely off his rocker, sure. But you really don't have much to lose by accumulating a bit of food and water plus turning your shed into a aquaponics setup. You'd be surprised how much food you'll be able to grow. Get a few chicken and you're good to go, they even deliver fertilizer for free.

Anyway completely agree about the running vs. making a stand. Have stated this here on many occasions. Unfortunately over here in Europe that war was lost years ago, which is why we are leaving. Especially in high altitude places like Colorado Springs. When you first get there you feel like you are going to die just walking up a hill, and if you are used to being able to run long distances or play some hard core pickup basketball, it is going to kick your ass at first, the oxygen deprived air.

I don't know all the ins and outs of it, but in theory you are supposed to acclimate to it, but it would be good to live there for a year to see how you do.

Have to go smaller. Im now in a small town that is very conservative, religious, white and safe. But its boring even though it has a lot if decent amenities such as restaurants, a good hospital, schools. Its a hub for this areas even smaller farming towns. An hour and half away from a real city.

Having lived in Iowa and Nebraska I would recommend avoiding both states. The youth population tend to suck and often lash out at their ostensibly conservative upbringing by being ultra-liberal. The largest informal assembly of actual communists I've ever had the 'privilege' to run into was in Nebraska. Low wages means that everybody works two or three shitty jobs to pay for the student loans accrued getting the worthless degrees that would have done them no good anywhere since nobody cares if you got a degree in a flyover state. Tier 2 and 3 cities are oftentimes pretty good and there's some real hotties in either state if you look carefully.

MN is not bad overall but the Somalis, car-raping roads, high taxes, and the entire state being run by the four Jews that live there reduce its charm. That being said, way fewer fatties than anywhere else listed except for metropolitan Colorado.
