Hey all, first post.

I decided to live in Medellin for a couple months to learn Spanish. I'm a pure beginner so I decided to stay in an Immersion School in El Poblado. I'm having a great time, seeing the sites, meeting new people and making new friends.

I've been here for 8 days now and it was the best decision I ever made.

So far I've been to Comuna 13, Envigado, Parque Lleras and Pueblito Paisa in the city. I've also done Guatape which is 2 hours outside of the city (a huge rock jutting out of the earth, with 360 views.

I haven't gone out too much outside of some very local salsa clubs and the clubs in El Poblado (Parque Lleras) are filled with tourists, but once I'm a few more weeks into learning spanish I plan to spread my wings a little bit more in the evenings.

I found a great gym in El Poblado called SmartFit which is only $25/month and full of great equipment and people.

I'll be in Medellin for a total of 9 weeks, and may decide to extend my stay depending on how I feel, not sure.

I've got a great girlfriend at home but she told me to "enjoy all Colombia has to offer" so I plan to do just that.

oh, and they just started selling edibles today across the street, pretty convenient!

Anyone else doing Immersion school or thinking about it in the near future?

What exactly is the vibe of immersion school? Is it in a college or does it have a big student population? I was thinking if I go to South America I could take some Spanish classes and some other courses in a college to be around the hotter college population. It would also put you right away in one of the best places to game in the city and you could get some decent leads.

Its a hostel school ... you get 4 hours a day of classes and 2 hours a week of private training. In addition you get 2 meals a day during the week. Small breakfast on the weekends. There are usually 2-3 excursions per week, mostly free with minimal fees (transport). I opted to upgrade to the private room. There are usually smaller groups of 3-5 people and about 8-10 groups all different levels.

I really enjoy the vibe, I go to school during the day, work remotely in the afternoon, workout in the early evening and either go to dinner or some activity in the evening. Tonight there is a free Bachata class around the corner, so we're taking advantage.

Sounds like a good time and similar to the school I attended in Bogota except I stayed off site. I really enjoyed the after school activities like city tours, rafting, feeding kids at an orphanage, etc. Make sure that you do go out and try to make some local friends to practice Spanish, it takes time and can be a pain in the ass as a beginner but you’ll make progress as the weeks go by. After two months of immersion you should be able to carry a decent basic conversation and it’ll lay a good foundation for further progress.

Colombia is a good place, be sure to make the most of your time and check out other cities, Bogota, Cali, Barranquilla. Buying the tickets in country shouldn't cost more than 50 dollars one way. Do not spend all your time in Medellin.

Definitely take trips to other areas, Bogota is a great city make sure to hit up and spend a couple weekends there.

Sounds like a great opportunity, take advantage and meet as many people as you can and learn as much Spanish as you can. Force yourself to speak even with people who speak English. Insist on Spanish.

What's the cost comparison of a hostel school and taking some courses in a Columbian college? I imagine a lot of these colleges also provide lodging for a fee and in some countries I even see college lodging is cheaper then hostels.

Beautiful. Great to hear you are loving it. It feels like I did something extremely similar a while back. Go to smartfit around 11 for the best babes, even if its only on the weekend. Stick with the Spanish lessons and they will serve you well. Some people will tell you to go everywhere, you'll get your chance. When I was there I didn't head out to other cities all the time, when you have local friends - Colombians and extranjeros you'll have a great time right where you are.


Heres a good budget air service if you want to go to Pereira or a smaller city, cheap and flies out of the city airport, which saves you the hassle of going to the int'l airport.

I am a student and saved the money during this year, mainly with AirBNB and while I am abroad I rent my room on AirBNB, I live in a touristic city. But I can get along with the money I saved for this 2 months. And what are you doing for income?

Yeah I'm a member of SmartFit in El Poblado, beautiful women, there is a female personal trainer I met that was a 10/10 just amazing.

I've been chatting with paisas (local Medellin women) and trying to find some who speak English so we can learn together, its been a lot of fun.

I'm here for business, so working remotely in the afternoons.

Everyone here is extremely friendly and I've been having a lot of fun. Last night we hit up the Food Trucks and I had a Picada for $10 .... the biggest plate of meat I've seen come out of a food truck, delicious!

I’m planning to do medelin this December. What made you choose your school instead of EAFIT. My strategy is to do EAFIT and game on the university girls. I hear there are armed guards around the school so you can’t really get in without an excuse.

I've been thinking about visiting Medellin for a while now. I think I'll spend a couple of months there near the end of the year to escape the British winter. Immersion school sounds great, I'm going to look into the uni too...
