"Woman climbs on the bottom of the Statue of Liberty, 7 arrested

(CNN) A woman has climbed the base of the Statue of Liberty and seven people have been arrested on Liberty Island, all of whom are believed to be protesters, law enforcement sources told CNN.

The woman is affiliated with Rise and Resist, Martin Joseph Quinn, an organizer for the group, told CNN. But Quinn added her climb was not part of the planned protest today. "She climbed without our knowledge. It was not part of our action. We are deeply concerned for her safety," Quinn said.

At one point, the woman walked back and forth under Lady Liberty's sandal and then sat down and appeared to unfurl a small flag or banner. The other protesters, also with Rise and Resist, held a banner over the railing at the base of the statue.


Law enforcement officials were seen mounting a ladder to the base of the statue and talking to the woman, who was sitting in the folds of the statue's gown.

The NYPD is building a rope rescue system to help bring the woman down from the base, because officers don't believe she will come down on her own, a police source told CNN.

Liberty Island has been evacuated while they attempt to get her down, according to Jerry Willis with the National Park Service.

The NYPD says three of its emergency service units and a harbor unit are on scene.

I wonder how the Russians would handle a similar situation? If some newly arrived migrant group scaled one of their National monuments in order to protest current policies. I doubt they would get much sympathy to put it that way.

Why is it the first thing immigrants - typically the ones from the shittiest countries - want to do is start making political waves? Even during short visits I don't even like to discuss politics or religion with locals unless I really know them. It's just not my place as it isn't my home. Even if it were, as a newcomer I'd like to think I'd act like the invited guest that I was allowed to be, not some ungrateful and entitled spoiled brat. Alas, most of us here are the products of a different culture than what we're seeing reflected in this story.

She picked the most predictable spot, though. For some reason a jewish lady throws a poem on a statue, one given to us by the French as a protest by some French guy against their own leader - Napoleon III, and it goes from being the Statue of Liberty to the Statue of Immigration. We ought to send it back or recycle it for scrap value.

Never mind that the self centered cunt just ruined the day of who knows how many families and other tourists who planned to go to see the statute. I guess they're the eggs that need to be broken to make this narcissistic omelet of hers.
