Wow, did this thread get interesting while I was not looking.

For those asking about oil and gas jobs, the big thing that sucks right now is a lot of the first stage stuff is being done by new companies. The guy who mentioned Petrohawk is spot-on. Oil and gas is working in three stages right now. Some group of guys get some money and some bodies and start a fly-by night. They sink some holes on some leases they buy and they hit something or else they provide a key service like wellheads to a large company. They get bought out by a regional company with some age and reputation. Then either those leases get bought by the big boys or the whole regional company gets bought if its portfolio is solid.

What sucks for the guy looking for a job is that these tiny companies just fire up overnight and try to go into business with the resources they have. Often they're just pulling references and recommendations from anyone and everyone they know and assembling crews on the fly.

Where you can find regular job postings online is from the regionals. I should ask around the working guys I know in the industry. A lot of them have been moving around in the year because of the companies reshuffling. If I turn up anything that clearly connects you to a job, I'll post it.

If I were as desperate as some of the folks I hear these days, I'd find my way to the Dakotas and just knock on every door until I had a job.

ersatz is right. Lawyers are a gateway. A friend of mine got outta his 3rd DUI. Total cost? $20K. That bill was split between the lawyer, and the judge and DA that needed to fill their war chests for upcoming campaigns. And then there was O.J.

The key is finding the right lawyer/country that this will work in. Bureaucracy/corruption can be your friend.

Btw, do any of you guys know any Americans that just straight up got a Euro work visa w/out being sponsored by a specific company? Some countries are bound to be easier to penetrate. I would like to have the option of moving in and shopping around. I see A LOT of great opportunities in offshore that are restricted to EU work visas.

A lot of countries are far more open for business too. Singapore, Korea, HK, etc. It's not corruption! Just putting 'has native english speaking ability and first hand knowledge of the north american market' in the requirements would pretty much only be you in europe. And there are other visa categories that you can come in under if you so feel inclined. If an employer is hurting for a specific employee type, they'll get the lawyers to get you in.

As someone who just turned 27 and have not gotten a "real" job after getting my finance degree 4 years ago, I have to say:

Yes, I am fucking scared to go out there and conquer the world, and my fear is Media messages of "easy good life" (reality tv and celeb) + the parent's fault for spoiling us and being afraid to take chances themselves thus setting bad examples, and YES, those that do hustle, those who say "Fuck it, it's time to become a MAN and face the music of responsibility" - those will go far.


Off the top of my head - about 3 months ago I was doing promotions in South FL. I was getting paid $30/hr cash MINIMUM with $80/hr cash on my best day. It's a tough hustle but if you want money it's there


You can go work on a yacht tomorrow after taking a test jump on a plane to FT lauderdale go dock walking make 2-3k CASH per month while getting all expenses covered, and if you stick with it you can make it to the capt position making SERIOUS money running 15 mil boats.

You can start buying things from desperate sellers on craiglist right now, today. You will call and email with lowball offers trying to make $50-150 on each flip, 80% of the time you will be told to shove off, but I know a guy making $15,000 a MONTH doing this - what does he have that you don't- more money and balls to do it, that's it. Start with apple products so you don't get burned.


I know many like myself feel we are not even sure what we are good at, if anything, and if we go and start doing things, will others call BS and expose us as fakes? Well, go and find out! Sitting around wasting time and not doing anything IS A CHOICE - not making a choice is a CHOICE.

My god, is that the truth. I'm in my last semester of a second degree now, in my early to mid thirties. I take classes online through an out-of state state school, but take proctored tests at a community college. I go up to the community college and study for a few hours before each test.

Let me tell you that there is literally no better hunting ground that I have seen. That includes the local 4 year college campuses and any other social venues in the city.

If you want to practice day game (sorry Roosh, i haven't had a chance to buy Day Bang yet - I dont know if this advice contradicts), put on a cool but slightly preppy shirt (most guys there will be dressed super shitty), grab some reading material, any reading material so it looks like you belong (and an ipod so that you dont actually have to read if you dont want to), and go and find the study areas of your local community college. Check the building where they have their testing center, where the library is, and where other designated study areas might be.

Then, set up for a few hours and get ready for the parade of young, hot, available targets to walk by, sit near you to study, etc...

It seems to be a better strategy then more social areas, because girls will more often be solo in the study areas. When not studying, they tend to be walking somewhere or in groups. In the study areas, they are EASY targets. Also, there is something about the community college environment where girls aren't going to be too caught up in their own social groups to care if you are plugged in at their school (state school campuses), they definitely aren't pretentious (like on the Ivy campuses around my area), etc..Just young, dumb, and out for fun... Being older even seems to work as a sleight advantage on the community college campus.

I graduated on the eve of the recession in the part of the country where the meltdown was first felt at full force (California Bay Area). Since then I've been laid off, unemployed, traveled to latin america, and now find myself in the northeastern corridor with a nice career.

What was it like? VERY FUCKIN HUMBLING.

I was about to be married, good thing this bitch found another older more stable dude or I would have married a gold digger.

How has it affected me?

I check unemployment news almost daily. It also forced embark me on a journey of self-development. At the moment I am lightweight physically, and emotionally. My material possessions can fit in a small carrying case, I am ready to bounce in a moment's notice. I am free of previous addictions that consume my resources. I read books, went to networking events, polished my resume, but mostly swallowed my pride and armed myself with job hunting knowledge.

I have learned to be a market player. Oh yes, there is nothing like the education one receives in a career center admist battered laborers who cannot use computers and ESL guidance counselors. I was fortunate enough to be placed in a low paying job with awful bosses who tortured my ego until there was none left.

That low paying job I now have parlayed into a career with global possibilities.

And, yet, one thing I learned from this recession is I must not be proud -- that I must be humble. For at an any moment, it can all be taken away from me.

The girls are now here, yet to be honest, they do not interest me as much as I thought they would have. I am more bent in protecting my castle. Which is why I am here in rooshs forum, to gleam the wisdom of the older cats and the smarter young cats cuz .. god damn..

If you have an engineering degree then you will only be unemployed if you want to. Go hard on the search for a job, there are MANY opportunities in that field. I just joined the oil industry, typing from a camp right now, my datasheet about the oil industry is coming soon on tommys topic.

Just a quick tip, GE is always recruiting recent graduates, you may want to try them for the sake of experience.

Out of all my friends who I grew up with, I would guess 25% unemployed and live at home, another 25% dicked around for a while and then ended up in law school, 20% have gov jobs/menial jobs w/parents, the rest are working mediocre jobs/lawyers and make around 50-60k.

A few relatives I know have decent law jobs (175k+) or biz jobs (85k+) but work insane hours. If you calculate the hourly, it works out to be about the same hourly as mediocre jobs.

In short, most people are living w/little funds and yet they still have status symbols like a C-class mercedes (of course, on lease), Ray-bahns, iphone 5, etc.

No wonder, its a lost generation...

Man, all the young people getting of out of college are falling flat on their faces. Salaries are terrible. I was chatting w/a guy who finished UCSB w/a good GPA in economics. He applied to analyst positions at all major banks/firms. Offers are horrible...Goldman Sachs in Salt-Lake City, Utah is paying 44k/year 1st year, some other firm starting is 55k/year. Of course all these have obscene hours (10+hrs/day). He quipped that salaries rise after 1st year, but still your making minimium wage hourly!!!!

I predict major and spectacular flame-outs in law and business by just the sheer influx of people coming into it. Coming economic student loan crisis is insane. If your student debt for law and undergrad is 200k, and your salary is 50k- Good luck to the economy growing when housing, gas, food and other expenses eat up most of your after-tax income (especially in CA). Bye-bye to owning a house by the time your 35. Hello corporate slavery and indebtness.

You can be bitter, and you are perfectly within reason to be feeling that way. We've basically been shunted by our 'masters' in favour of cheap labour and banksters. That said, we can perhaps see it as a blessing in disguise as it is almost forcing my generation to become much more entrepreneurial than we would have otherwise been.

Personally, I see a lot of benefits with those type of jobs. The process of being hired is often shorter and easier than for white collar. Little or no contact with BS hr departments. Possibly easier to get short-term contracts as well, whereas you often have to commit for several years if you want a stable white collar job. Maybe the pay isn't that much worse either, especially since the income-level salaries for white collar jobs seems to stagnate or even drop.

Not to mention all the benefits of being physically active on your job, instead of just sitting in front of a computer screen.

For the next few years I will be looking to do this up to 6 months a year, while traveling and learning languages for the rest of the year. If I can get some kind of income going while on road as well, all the better. Then further down the road I might still focus on getting a career going again.

College graduates in particular don't like the idea of Blue Collar work because:

1. They still want to be around people in their own age and peer group.
2. They view Blue Collar workers as uneducated proles and "rednecks."
