Natural gas and oil jobs will be coming soon to a neighborhood near you. Pennsylvania's flooded with drilling. Ohio's getting ready to open up, too. If a man wants work in America, it's here. Drilling jobs pay well. And global energy demand ain't going down anytime soon.

Yeah, you may get incinerated or ground up in the process. Goes with the territory.

And for those not up for the real work, lots of business sprouts up in the periphery of every boom. More money was made during the California Gold Rush running hotels and restaurants than was ever taken from the ground. Where there's opportunity, there's usually even more opportunity.

An older friend of mine who was already a millionaire (barely) made a killing selling leases on land he bought for nothing. Those companies that bought the leases from him are now selling to companies like Chevron and making a killing. Pull up a map and speculate how far the Marcellus Shale formation's deep deposits can go beyond their current known ranges.

There's money to be made whether you're willing to do real work or not.

You yanks dont appreciate how in demand your skills are worldwide sometimes. Not to mention a work ethic that is matched only by the Japs, English and Germans really. The world copies your business models and is still light years behind in so many areas. Also, the quality of your tertiary educational institutions is pretty much without par.

Finance majors would be gobbled up in Singapore and Hong Kong. Engineers would be snapped up all over South America. I know engineers in Russia that make 150k-200k a year and pay no real tax while they fuck the local villages teenagers.

There are some degrees that will serve you well everywhere. Sciences and some finance degrees. Best thing to do is learn a language and move to developing countries. The average wage is low, but skilled people in developing economies earn a ton, and with low cost of living your standard of living is very high.

Australia is crying for people at the moment. We need doctors, engineers, finance majors, nurses, you name it. There is a whole world out there and maybe you need to be skipping the county with that degree and see what options you have abroad. You may be surprised to see you are much better off.

The world is changing and its our generation that will feel the pinch the most. The baby boomers fucked us badly, and the very liberal and leftist approach our governments are taking dont bode well for any of the developed economies long term IMO

Yep. While Russian engineers are no mugs, many of the contracts are held by foreign companies. Not only that, but foreign experience is highly valued. More experience with modern practice and methods. There are skill shortages all over the world right now and Russia has a problem with skills. Half the engineers there could not even speak functional Russian at times.

Check out rigzone.com and oilcareers.com. The Gulf of Mexico is always hiring. I did some work on a boat owned by Solstad shipping. The boat was the Normand Clipper. DUDE. You would clean house in the South. A Swedish accent would kill it here. I'll ask around for whose hiring and let you know.

I speak from lots of experience about going through periods not getting laid. Whether on a military vessel, offshore boat, or months at a time in war zone's. I envy anyone with a petroleum engineering degree. Oil exploration in the US is exploding.

I'm heavily invested in small oil companies, speculating that they'll be bought out by big oil.

If you want an example of one that was recently snatched up, look at Petrohawk (HK). It was bought out by BHP this past summer. My dad made about $8K on that deal.

At the very least, even if you decide to go into something completely different than your degree, you have the basic courses out of the way that will allow you to get a second degree with only a 1-1.5 year investment. That's what I'm doing right now. If I had to start from scratch, i'd be truly fucked. Actually, I'd probably be relegated to making $600-$1000 per month teaching ESL in third world countries for the rest of my life. It sounds good to adventure seekers, but its not. Oh, and you need a degree to do that in most worthwhile countries.

Unless you have a family business to inherit, some inside track on a government job that doesn't require a degree, or already have an internet business that is doing very well, then its a good idea.

Hydrogonian glad to have you back on here, but allow me to disagree with you.

I think the earlier you start uni the better, specially when you know you are choosing the right course. Also the earlier you get your life sorted the better, if you start uni at 18, after you graduate, you have plenty of time for other shit such as, you may decide to do a post graduation course, by the time you reach 25 you may already have few yrs of work experience and you will be more likely to get better paid.

Soon as you join uni, you will receive loans and government grants that will allow you to travel around the world and fuck nicer women, resuming the earlier you get focused the better, also you have more time to commit mistakes and correct yourself along the way. I graduated at 24 (last yr), i dont think it was over late but it would be great if i had done a bit earlier.

Actually, I completely agree with your perspective if you are one of the exceedingly rare 18 year olds with a firm well thought out direction. Otherwise, its a waste of four years and tuition. I suppose that access to internet information has changed the level of insight and preparedness of a lot of 18 year olds. That wasn't the case in the 90's.

I like that idea. Its not a full commitment, but it makes going back to school a heck of a lot easier if or when it's necessary.

A lot of colleges have agreements with Comm. Colleges. Do two years w/ the smaller school and automatically transfer to the uni if your grades are up to snuff. So essentially you're getting the same quality girl.

Wake Co. Tech./N.C. State

These are two schools that do it. Something to think about and much cheaper on the budget. Cape Fear was FULL of pussy and right on the river. Beautiful place.

Actually, there are some upsides to certain colleges: if you go to a school that is considered "prestigious", you have much better access to job recruiters than someone from a school with less of a name brands. I won't speculate on whether it's "fair" or not, but the advantage certainly exists.
