I did not see what it cost to go to Washington State but it was probably a shit load cheaper than going to Duke, so 50 to 60K is not that far off in tuition alone. She wanted to go to Duke, it was not a requirement to go there in order to succeed in life.

She had a full ride to Vanderbilt but choose to go to Duke because it was "her dream school"- Bad decision, honestly I think she still would have done porn if she had the full ride at Vanderbilt. Something is just off about her....

I would venture to guess that many of the second and third tier law grads are pursuing paths outside of traditional law. I think the girl i was talking to said her ambition was big law, or the CIA.

A lot of law school grads have big ambitions of government employment. Her CIA dreams were what prompted me to ask how she planned to pay her student loans. Even if you go in as a GS11/12 that’s $75K/year tops for the first few years. You’d struggle to make the minimum loan payments on debt that cannot be discharged in bankruptcy.

If you can come up with the money for a billboard you can do Personal Injury coming out of a 3rd/4th law school. A government job guarantees that after 10 years your loans are discharged as long as you made minimum payments during that ten year period. If you have an electrical engineering/computer science/physics background patent law will yield you a very comfortable salary.

It used to be. Now it includes people who tick the right boxes.

Remember when Mizzou was in deep financial trouble after kids dropped out following all of the protests? Their annual shortfall was ~$300 million - the exact amount of forgiven tuition for that year alone!

It's not an above-board scholarship program that can be critiqued, they just forgive the debt of any student they choose. And you know it's not the white males with a conservative outlook getting a pass.

Keep in mind Private Schools have always been for the upper middle class. Top students who can't afford 47k a year schoools can go to their flagship for usually around $10,000-$15,000 a year (minus "liberal" california).

Very possible to get a degree for under $50,000. Problem is upper middle class liberals want to get that ego bump for going to Duke (even in some worthless degree), so they spend $200,000 instead and graduate in massive debt or zero thanks to daddy.

For graduate school, cost does skyrocket so you gotta be smart and make sure you attend a top 25 school or your just burning $$

You are right about that. Lots of Liberals do go to places like Duke for the patina of elitism on the diploma. Duke kids call the school the "Harvard of the South." Some of that is founded in that there is quite a few alumni from Duke who are lawyers, doctors, politicians, and other premium connections down here. However, most of it is bullshit, and you will find enough people in powerful positions from UNC or NC State to diminish that sense of premium connections.(Game note: ECU is where all of the easy sluts used to go, probably still do) Had she wormed her way into the Law School at Duke, she would have a golden ticket. Going to a third rate Law School, not so much.

Keep in mind where that comes from. Going to an elite school has huge advantages in elite fields. Getting into McKinsey happens a lot from ivies. Doing it from a flagship state U is extremely rare.

However, people like her aren't interested in that much work and even if they were aren't quite smart enough to understand that you go to those schools because of the acccess that their alumni network and recruitment gives you. Going to them for something like gender studies or literature doesn't do jack shit to benefit you unless you're dead set on being a commie professor somewhere.

Funny enough, those guys earn more on average than the guys teaching Chinese people the ABCs, so not a bad move all in all.

There's absolutely no shame in working for a living, regardless of what the job is. Back in the day, garbage person jobs (I write person instead of man to ensure that my writing does not make any ambitious young girls believe that they don't stand a chance pursuing a rewarding career in trash disposal) used to pay pretty well here in Canada when they were a unionized city employee position.

Then the cities got smart and starting outsourcing to third party providers who pay their staff rather poorly.

The real risk with being a garbage person is that if fate does deal you a lousy hand, you're a middle aged man, 20 years away from retirement with no competitive skills.

If we lived in a time where being a garbage person paid $40 an hour and had guaranteed job security up to age 60, I'd be wondering why I was stupid enough to go to university.

Getting in Duke is no joke, you have to to take AP everything and get A's. That is why I rag on Richard Spencer so much, he went to Duke and wasted it. If you can get accepted to Duke straight out most state schools and lesser private schools will give you a full ride. For what it is worth she probably has a full or partial scholarship to NYLS.

As luck would have it, I actually knew a few people who did go to Duke and a few people who were rejected. I would say that all of them were very smart folks and all had very good grades in High School, however, straight A's at AP level classes were not required for those who were accepted. I would concur that they were at least in the top 6% of the class however. The only one with a perfect GPA was our valedictorian.

One that was rejected worked himself to the bone, got stellar grades, was in the right academic program(AP Level Courses for everything), and was still rejected. Dude was not Valedictorian, but close as in 2% or so of his class. Go Figure. The other one had no chance in hell like me with my dream school.

From the experience of my friends, I agree that it is a very selective university. Clearly this girl did have what she needed for them on paper obviously to get an acceptance letter. I would guess that my inquiry would not be at Duke, but at Vanderbilt for spending the money to educate her.
