RE: The best sandwiches in the world
The custom sandwich idea mentioned earlier does well for a 2 location that I know of mom and pop place here. They seem to be really busy. A lot of takeaway business for the nearby work places. They a have a half sheet of paper with options on it. Circle your bread choice, meat choice, cheese, condiments, chips, soda, etc. turn it in with you name on it at the register. Can be faxed or probably e-mailed in and then someone from an office or garage or where ever comes pick it up.
I was at a place the other day that had a BLT with a chunk of of red salmon fillet on it. Probably work there as people will eat that salmon pretty happily in Europe. Could charge handsomely.

Francesinha is a main dish eaten with fork and knife on a plate. I would not consider it a sandwich.

Anyway, this brother is going to hook you up. I do know a few local butchers I can get you in touch with. Send me a private message.

Spanish ham>>>>American ham. Best in the world actually, only Italian proscuitto comes close, and some parts of France.

The best Spanish ham is the one made in Portugal and then labeled as Spanish Jamon Serrano ))))

Question for you Rocha... If Portuguese ham was really the best, why would need to hide its origin?

I agree. There is no comparison. American ham doesn't come close to Spanish ham. Spanish ham is renowned as the BEST in the WORLD.

Tortas are pretty good too, can be made with a variety of meats and toppings, must include avocado and quality bread.

The wild boar ham some times is bought by spanish producers to portuguese ones. And then is labeled in Spain. The producers just sell their product, certainly they don't make any effort at hidding the origins, since Portuguese ham is also a protected brand.

It's the best ham in the world. In Spanish they call it "Jamon Iberico de bellota", in Portuguese is "Presunto de Bolota Pata Negra", it's from wild boar feeded with acorn. It is not a Spanish exclusive.
So my comment was directed to the previous one considering the Spanish the best in the world and overlooking the Portuguese ham.

This ham is mostly produced in the Alentejo region in the southern Portugal plains, and in the adjacent Spanish regions of Extremadura, and Eastern part of Andaluzia (closer to Portugal border).

That said, the idea is to have good sandwiches (not Spanish ones), a small menu of the worlds best.

Current candidates:

Club (ham and/or chicken)
BLT
Cubano
Reuben
Ham and cheese

So, I want some forum input - what's your favorite sandwich and where did you have it/how was it made?

I've never lived in the US, but I seem to recall a good, high end sandwich shop or two in places like Los Angeles and San Francisco. Anyone have some favorites I can check out online?

You are in the tourist area, but you want to have non-Spanish (taste the world) types of sandwiches?

I think you are going to have an image/advertising problem. I would question how receptive tourists are likely to be to having a sandwich from home when they are vacationing in Spain. Won't they want Spanish-style food?

Otherwise, if you are trying to bring something to locals that they don't usually encounter, isn't it better to be outside a tourist area? I would think you would also have to be careful (as many have pointed out) of whether you can properly source the ingredients to make your round the world type of sandwiches.

For example, I like a nice club sandwich with turkey, but how easy is it to get turkey in Spain? And is that something your target customers, whether tourists or locals, are going to want?

Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches are underrated.

Chewy flakey baguette filled with cilantro, pickled white radish/carrots, different kinds of meat like BBQ sliced pork, sliced chili peppers, cucumber, chicken, or cold cuts, chicken liver pate or some other spread on the bread.

They are healthy too and not greasy. I ate these things every morning after my morning run in saigon and felt great.

A good banh mi sandwich should have all fresh ingredients and not substituted with stuff like Kale or western style pickles either. Fusion banh mi is for faggots.

Just adding bit of useless advice, make my time helping running the family's Indian restaurant. The first question I would ask is the location of the shop? This is important because it tell you what type of sandwich you want make depending on the population and amount of traffic you will get. High volume of people, you want to add in some premade sandwiches and fresh made sandwiches into your menu to serve your clientele better.

As for sandwich, since I eat anything, its hard to narrow down. One of the go sandwich for me is breakfast sandwich: talyor ham, egg, and cheese on bagel. Its classic Jersey sandwich for nice meal in morning or afternoon. Fun sandwich you can make is shooter's sandwich:Shooter's Sandwich

The link provide also has some commentor's suggestion on their favorite sandwiches as well.

Mostly due to the huge Viet population. A lot of the sandwich shops are Viet owned in the San Gabriel valley and in Garden Grove of course. They even used to be major gangster hangouts back in the 90's.

I used to go to the Vietnamese coffee shops with my Viet friend back in the day too. They spoke Vietnamese it was always local Viet clientele and they served Viet/french drip coffee in the tiny cup. A hot piece of Vietnamese ass would come and serve it to you too.

These were the most underrated pick up joints back in the early 00's in socal but local Viet guys knew what was up.
