Just remember that girls aren´t going to be speaking in English so you never know whether or not they speak until you approach. You have to approach many girls. I probably approached 6 last night. I think about 5 spoke English. I got a kiss by a super hottie in the first 5 minutes who told me she had a boyfriends and couldn´t do it, then left. The one who didn´t speak English did know how to say fuck off though.

Tonight I was in Lapa. I hear a Brazilian girl speaking in Portuguese, but I don´t hear the Carioca accent, where instead of saying doice, it sounds more like doish when a carioca says two. So in my bad Portuguese I ask her, `You´re not from Rio?` She answers in English, `No I´m not from Rio, you don´t have to try speaking Portuguese with me.´ She tells me about how she lived in the US for 6 months, blah blah, the conversation goes on, until her sister pulls her asside. She comes back saying her sister wants to go home but she wants to stay. She said she needed a good reason to stay, so I asked her what a good reason would be (Now that I look back at it, I should have just gone for the kiss there and tell her that´s a good enough reason), and she responded by saying if she could find a guy to buy her a cab home, it would be a good enough reason. I told her, I couldn´t buy her a cab, but I could show her a good time, then went in for the kiss, and she backed away. We talk for a minute, and she mentions the cab again. I ask her how far away she lives, and she said it´s about R$50. I tell her I only have about R$50 cash on me, and I needed money for my ride, so I ask if I can stay at her place, she tells me no. She says she likes men who can pay. I go, `So you´re just out for money, huh?`She says, `No, I just like men who pay, I have to go now, bye.´

I couldn´t believe what I had heard. That never happens in Brazil! She must have picked it up in her 6 months in the US. I told my Brazilian friends (girls too) about it and they were shocked. Shit, she basically told me she wanted me to pay for her taxi home and I wasn´t getting laid. She wasn´t even that hot, maybe a 6. I could have probably gone and bought a prostitute who was hotter than her, and gotten laid for R$50. WTF? I felt like I was back in America. Week! I also look back on it though and think I should have invited her to stay at my place, because there is a good chance the reason I couldn´t stay at hers was because I´m assuming she lived with her parents, as most Brazilians her age do, but that wouldn´t have been `tranquilo`on my part because I´m sleeping on a friends couch.

I also wanted to coment on the person who was robbed twice in three weeks. I don´t understand how that could happen. I have tons of friends who have lived in Rio for 25 years and never been robbed. I´m on about week 2 1/2 and haven´t seen anything that would make me worried. Some people have told me I could pass for Brazilian, and I´ve had multiple people ask if I was, plus if I go out I´m usually with Brazilians. I don´t think I look Brazilian by any means, and neither do my Brazilian friends. But twice in three weeks, that´s some bad luck right there. I think the violence/robery in Rio is a little overstressed (Not saying you shouldn´t still be cautious). You just have to follow basic rules, that you probably already know. Just walk around confident and don´t look like a gringo.

Im curious what these muggings look like.
I mean does the mugger usually have a weapon? Gun? Knife?
Is there usually one mugger, or more than one?
Do they target guys that are alone, or groups of 2 or 3 as well?
Are muggings done mostly at night?
Are the muggers hiding in an ally, or just walking on the street?

I've been fortunate to never have been in this situation, and want to know what to look out for.

Recife is pretty typical for a northeastern city. Girls are hit or miss, but there are some really beautiful ones walking around. Better than Fortaleza for sure.

I really suck with finding good nightlife in a short amount of time. Been to a couple of okay clubs and bars. I'm starting to get the impression that there is Rio, and then there's everything else. But I'm taking it easy and just soaking in the vibe.

I've never had any robbery close calls in Brazil, even though I've done some stupid things in Rio like walk around in the middle of the night. I basically look more Brazilian more than a lot of brazilian people, but on the downside my exotic factor in the club is zero. I hear about gringos who get approached a lot by brazilian girls but that almost never happens to me. The only place I look exotic is ecuador, peru, and bolivia.

Agreed. Even here in Rio it took me few weeks to piece out a decent nightlife plan.
If Rio is any guide, nightlife can be very spread out and different nights favor different places.

Some things I´ve learned in Rio that might help:

- If where you are going is close, use the subway. It´s simple to figure out, fast, and easy. Not very dangerous during the day, not sure about night. Taxis are pretty expensive. Bus is also a great alternative. If you are going on bus later in the night, if you can take one of the R$4.50 busses. You will be able to tell which ones they are from the outside, they look quite a bit nicer than the others. They seem much safer and have air conditioning too. And never sit in the back of the bus, that´s where you´re going to get robbed, so my Brazilian friends say.

- I would recomend getting away from Ipanema, Copacabana, and Leblom for a day and go to Barra Da Tijuca. The beach is really nice, clear water, also warmer than the other three, with not as many people. I also saw a lot of cute girls and it was a weekday. I would say it´s a great place for day game, especially because it´s a rich neighborhood and there´s a good chance the girls speak english. If you go, take the bus. From Ipenima the 175 will take you there. From Barra, the 2113 will take you all the way back to Copa if you are there, and also passes by Ipanema and Lelom. You might be able to catch 2113 TO Barra too, not sure though.

- Hit up a soccer game on Sunday at Maracanã. Did it today, had a blast. Great experience. Take the subway for sure, it´s easy and fun. Just follow everyone singing aloud with the soccer jerseys on.

- When you approach girls speak in Portuguese at first! Seriously, if you are planing a trip to Brazil, at least learn a couple things you can say to girls, then you can go on in English if they speak it. I´m doing so much better this time now that I can speak a little Portuguese. They like the fact you at least try. Especially helps if you are American, because then they assume you aren´t like all other Americans, who don´t bother to learn languages. Everyone in general appreciates you at least trying to learn even if your Portuguese is butchered.

- Hit up Lapa, lots of fun. I can´t remember the spots name, I´ll find out and let ya´ll know, along with some other clubs. But there is a three story bar in Lapa that is an antique store durring the day, it´s pretty good, and I met a lot of english speakers there, and even some fellow gringos. (I think someone else actually metioned the bar earlier in this thread.)

- Check out Gávea on Thrusday. Loads of people fill the streets. Aproaching here is a little tougher if you don´t have a wingman and don´t know Portuguese well, because most everyone is in groups. But either way, still a real fun spot.

- Check out Zero Zero Friday or Saturday night, it´s definitely good, but the lines get big so go around 10ish. There was one other club I went to this weekend, still have to find out the name, but it was the best one I´ve been to so far, it´s right by Arpuador. I also had a good time at Namaste last year, not sure if it´s still good. Do not go to Katmandu!

- As I´ve said before, day game is essential. Beach is a great place. Remember, `Pode olha para mim`- `can you watch this for me.´ Then when you get back from the beach thank her and run your game.

- Ask people that look trustworthy about safety (Security would work great if you can communicate with them or someone at the hostel you are staying at). Ask if it is safe for you to walk to where you need to go or if you should take a taxi.

That´s all I can think of off the top of my head right now, I´ll let ya´ll know more when I figure it out myself.

I went up to Barra beach and thought it was awesome. Although it was completely deserted because the weather looked sketchy and I got downpoured on riding my bike back to Ipanema. But yeah, pretty nice beach down there.

What's the deal with Niteroi? I never hear anything about that area. Is there anything worth checking out in the North Zone?

There was a huge electricity blackout in Brazil yesterday.

Basically the whole of the south of the country including the whole of Rio and Sao Paulo, all the way to the Paraguay border and Paraguay was taken out too.

Kind of embarrassing for a city that was just awarded the Olympics. Saw a disgusted Brazilian get in his car complaining that they were nowhere near ready and how embarrassing it was.

It started at 10:10 and lasted until quarter to one in the morning so that basically wiped out all of the nightlife options.

I spoke to some Brazilians in Miami International about the blackout. There was a flight leaving to Rio right next to the one leaving to Buenos Aires. Man I wanted to change flights, the few Brazilian girls I saw were so sexy I got an email of one too!

I read somewhere that the city of Rio sent out EVERY police officer and special unit to maintain control. The streets were safer than ever last night.

I was out in a bar and when the lights went out there was no panic, no customers running off. Everyone was calm and chill, and continued drinking beer. I doubt this would happen in some other countries.

Just found this board and am moving to Rio next week so I'm browsing over these threads....you guys talk about not being able to walk around at night...is that really true? like is it really THAT bad that you're almost guaranteed to get robbed all the time?? Had some friends who went to Rio like 5 years ago and they were telling me that they would go out to sick dinners with bottles of wine for like 20 or 30$ a man....they said bottles in the clubs are dirt cheap...is that true? cause i mean...the worst case i'll have 50$ on me and if they take that i really don't care....

also this whole getting somewhere early to get past this line thing....sure a lot of you have been to Mexico....gringos run shit over there...if there's a line we skip it...not even a question....i HATEEEE waiting in lines....i mean i'm sure if you're there for a little you can get to know the promoters...doormen...etc. and skip all that nonesense....how long are these lines you're talking about?? Do you have to pay cover to get into clubs?? I read on some other thread something about $75 to get in...but i'm assuming that's a whore house...are drinks expensive??

just dont make eye contact with people who are trying to sell you shit or begging you for change. you can take buses at night without a problem, and you better learn the lines quickly because taxis are ridiculously expensive. bottles in clubs are NOT dirt cheap. if you wanna live on a tight budget and you dont like or know how to cook, drink your acai at the juice bars and lunch/dine at lanchonettes where you can get a big plate of food with your choice of meat, rice, beans and farofa for 3-4 bucks. the brazilian currency, the real, is severely over-valued right now and it makes rio one of if not the most expensive cities in latin america. youre not gonna be able to skip a line just by being a gringo.
i hate to burst your bubble, but i feel like i should tell you these things before you get here so you dont have these delusions of grandeur and set yourself up for a tough reality check. if you want to go somewhere where your passport and currency will get you farther, i would recommend settling in a medium-sized city in argentina. the cost of living is 1/4th of what it is in rio, the language is easier to pick up, the public universities are all free, and the women are comparable if not better. sure, you dont have the beach, but if youve spent a bunch of time in miami then its not like your life wont be complete without having lived in rio.
bottom line: brazil is the best place in the world for vacation. but if you want to LIVE somewhere, i'd go with argentina. when you have a finite amount of resources, you have to use them efficiently. to give you an idea of how expensive rio is compared to say, cordoba, compare the cost of renting a room in an apartment. the website for brazil in

With the mugging thing, I have been to Rio a few times and never had a problem.

No the $75 does not refer to whorehouses. Just regular up-scale clubs.

Mid range clubs are rotinely in the $20-$50 range just to get in and than is just cover usually. Does not include any drinks.
