Here're two we can thank the Bush family for:

1. "Divisive" with a short 'I' sound in the 2nd syllable. "Div-EYE-Siv" is correct. The elder Bush pronounced this wrong in a speech in 1989 and we were off to the races. In this era of the Trump-hating MSM, you hear this one all the time.

2. "Nucular" instead of the correct "nuclear." George W. is famous for starting this one. It's so commonly pronounced this way now people don't even bother correcting it (other than Grammar Nazis like me).

"Nucular" goes back to even Jimmy Carter, who actually worked on a nuke sub. It's just a regional pronunciation, not an intelligence marker (sorry, libs).

That said, I refrain from criticizing someone's spoken vernacular (I'm guilty of using incorrect spoken English all the time — "I got a…," etc.). But clarity in speech works differently than in the written word.

If something is worth committing to the printed/written word, it's worth being clear, concise and correct.
One of my jobs is a copy editor, and you wouldn't believe the sixth grade writing from adults I have to clean up — even from actual teachers and professionals who should know better.

Speak however you wish — casually, persuasively, whatever.
But when you commit to print, get your shit together.

Being a crusty old grammar nazi I've got a ton, but here are two that drive me bonkers on the spot:

- 'there' instead of 'their', e.g. it wasn't there idea...
- 'I can't deal' instead of 'I can't deal with this'

I am not sure if the latter one is inherently false, it just drives me nuts for some reason. I think I need help...

One of my pet peeves during English class in grade school was correcting grammar and spelling in sentences where the corrected version didn't sound or feel right. I would have rather just rewritten the sentence so it sounded correct. Can't quite do that on a test.

Might be best to just rewrite the sentence so it conveys the message you're trying to send.

This isn't incorrect technically, but it reeks of reddit-fagness - "whilst" in place of "while." It's just trying to sound smarter using a word that means the exact same thing but has one more letter.

"That's rascist." - I have seen this one continuously throughout the years, even before the full-on PC onslaught. It boggles my mind, where the fuck does the S come from? Race -> Racist. Simple enough. The only word I can think of using the "rasc" without a hard C sound is "irascible."
