I hear frequently how these swords tend to sometimes handle poorly, just because of bad construction. Good blade doesn't matter if the handle, pommel and crossguard are shitty.

Yes, my buddy had to reconstruct his, and the guard is still loose, rattles when you swing.

First sword I made suffers from same problem. The thing is, the fault in mine was the fact I made handle from two halves. That is not bad really and is usual method of making handle, but I did slots in the halves that were both a bit shallow and wood was slightly moist. So when I slipped the handle on the tang, finished everything and the warmth evaporated all moisture, I was left with rattly handle.

No, that is not a knife lol or a messer. You make slot into each half, glue the halves together and put them onto the tang, that is how it's done. I mean that is not the obligatory way, but preferred one.

Yesterday, I attended the tournament that is held yearly here. Met up with some acquaintances from last year and supported my friend who competed. Today they are doing more competitions, but I have work to do so I won't attend.

Things I noticed:

All the fighters have gotten more aggressive, to the point that some ridiculous moves were pulled. My friend grabbed one of his opponents, keeping his sword at bay, and threw him out of the ring. The man did a combat roll and rushed back in but the judges called that bout null and had them reset.

One fellow, who likes messing with his opponents by physically taunting them, decided to fight while on one knee. Actually managed to win a match like that. I wouldn't recommend it.

I did some light sparring with a boar spear. Fun and relatively easy, though I learned quite a bit.

Women were gorgeous this year too, they've obviously trained hard to stay fit for fighting.

Overall, good fun and a great learning experience. I think next year I'll compete. If any of you can make it to a tournament, even to just observe, do so.

My buddy does these and other exercises with a pair of broken sparring swords he strapped together to double the weight. Absolutely key for speed and precision.

Got taught a valuable lesson last week about pain.

We were doing group combat with foam padded weapons. So it got way too hot here in Paris, after one hot bout (my team lost 9-10, great match) some fun chaps decided to up the ante: we're removing all the body protection, keeping only the helmet.

Was pretty hyped going into combat berserker style but oh boy was I in for a surprised.

Everything went well until I took a full side way slash, from a one-handed sword, to the lower ribs. Totally knocked the air out of my lungs and I slowly collapsed to the ground. The pain is not excruciating but it makes it impossible to stand and fight.

A few minutes later, took a similar blow. Dude feinting high for me to raise the shield then his buddy slashed low. I had to call it quit that day.

So the blows in itself are not serious, I got some bruises but that's all. The kinetic force that transfer with it and rocking your organ though, gets you KO.

This is pretty new to me because normally while wearing armor you barely even feel those blows. Just go to show how even a gambeson can be a life saver.

I guess it's fun training HEMA but it would really suck balls to actually have to fight on a medieval battlefield.

Imagine being hit with an warhammer in a battle, with or without plate armor. Full plate will protect you from death, but concussions and force of impact will probably be felt and are enough to throw you off a little. You experienced similar effect and without an armor. Nothing more to say here.

I trained with only gloves and helmet until I got armor, yes it is a bitch. Can’t believe you went in with only a helmet. If I had to choose one piece of armor it would be gloves. Way too easy to break a finger, even with gloves.

Started dual wielding lessons in my club last week - fucking awesome. Then I realize my arms love getting in the way of one another.

The trick is to attack and defend at the same time, not block-then-counter attack.
Also, dual sword spinning look kickass and excellent coordination exercise.

Very nice. I'm decent at two axes. Two swords less so sword and axe or sword and dagger I do well at. It is definitely a change of pace to do two things at once.

We learn parrying/riposting with either hand, because tough luck parrying a right strike with your left sword

That makes sense. What I wanted to say but it came out a bit simplified is that you don't use them like in the movies. Hands work separately with each doing practically different strikes or one parries and other attacks. Is that correct?
I don't know if any movie got the dual wielding correctly. For example dual wielding swords in the movies function basically in the same way. Each hand makes same attack. I think there are Italian schools that describe dual wielding, not sure about German ones. What did you follow?

Yeah, movies get it wrong. Especially with the "crossed swords block" congratulations retard, you just bound both your weapons and now your opponent has control.

Typically your hands are in fact working separately, one blocking and the other attacking at the same time.

Just attended a tournament this weekend to support a friend. Did well until the second elimination round. Really made me miss the art. I've got to get a job with fewer hours so I can practice.
