He got married when he thought she was the best he could get, then realized too late he had better options.

This is, of course, NOT factored into the ex's story. She doesn't want to confront the reality that a plain guy becomes more attractive to women with status, whereas a plain woman's SMV just stays unchanged (and then dwindles with age).

Dumping a starter wife after you get rich and famous is sort of expected. That doesn't really make the scandal papers. It's only if you've built your brand on top of male-feminism that you've set yourself up to be the liberal version of Jimmy Swaggart.

Eh...lets be honest. Most of us have no idea how we would act. Even in my case I wouldn't venture that far.....part of the reason its so easy for me is that I just don't put myself in compromising situations and my choice of career is, although very lucrative, not the kind of career where I would have ladies throwing themselves at me because I'm famous and/or hold the key to their careers.

One of my friends was a pro athlete and managed to stay true.....I have an enormous amount of respect for that kind of impulse control.

I'm actually drawn back to The Avengers, first and second films, especially around Hawkeye and Black Widow's relationship. Remember, Whedon wrote and directed both. In the first film, it feels as if these two characters are meant to be together, the sexual tension is very high and there is a strong suggestion of an intimacy - not just sexual, emotional intimacy, which is arguably just as bad a betrayal of a matrimonial relationship. It's the only real romantic relationship in the film; Tony Stark and Pepper Potts' relationship is a legacy from the Iron Man films. In the second film we suddenly get the wife and family at home like an add-on, an afterthought.

My guess is that this dynamic between Hawkeye and Black Widow is in microcosm how JossWhedon conducts his affairs with younger female women. Hawkeye is a Rescuer taken up to 11: he got Black Widow out of some shit, that's why she "owes" him, that's apparently why they have a close emotional bond but can't take it to an open relationship for some reason ... which we find out in the second film is because Hawkeye is already fucking married. This is probably how Whedon rationalises his affairs with hot sluts: they give him a sob story about how they're down to their last rent for the week, he pays them, they owe him, he gets them a part, they fuck him, along the way having a weird non-relationship-y dynamic.

This discussion of Super Hero movies reminds me of the Spiderman film with Sand Man and the Venom suit.

Early in the movie, the still-human Sandman leaves his wife and child through the fire escape of their apartment to commit burglary (because a burglar doesn't know how to use the front door, obviously) but as he's leaving he says to the son/daughter/whatever: "I'm not a bad person; I just do bad things."

That line's always stuck with me; I'm not sure if the writer is brilliant or pathetic.

One of the lessons that drastically needs to be drummed into the heads of children growing up is that you are what you do. This doesn't meant that you're your job - the job is just a label. The college you attend is just a label. How "hot" your girlfriend is, is but another label. The question is what do you do?

Do you show up to work on time and do a good job? Or did you inherit your wealth, and now you fritter it away on socialite parties? Does your girlfriend satisfy you physically and emotionally? Or are you merely popular because you know where to find blow for everybody and put on airs?

People are very obsessed with being rather than doing. As if there's some sort of ceremony with a cape and a gown at the end of it, that marks you as a "real" X. There isn't - or if there is, it's merely an excuse for a party.

A Medal of Honor recipient isn't "doing" the Medal of Honor when it's awarded - he was "doing" Super Soldier when he went above and beyond in the theatre of war. A Writer is not somebody who signs books at the local Barnes & Noble - he's a man who sits in front of his keyboard for hours at a time, ignoring friends and family as he obsesses over the words on the screen. A good man is not somebody who buys drinks for his friends after receiving his pay cheque; a good man is somebody who keeps his word even when it costs him dearly.

So forth.

Thus, we have JossWhedon the feminist, the film maker, the celebrity - and we have Joss Whedon the soy boy, the fanboy, and the famous (but not popular) geek.

When we discuss cheating and human weakness, we envision ourselves in a situation where some young and horny bit of fluff decides to come on to us after a couple of drinks, while we're on a business trip; "Would I have the strength to resist?" This is not an Oedipal complex. I know I said he married his mother, but it would be more literally correct is that he married someone who thought he was hot at first and whose love morphed into the love he got from his mother over next 6 or 7 years. i.e. No lust. Then he started getting young pussy thrown at him -- but more importantly, the promise of feeling like he was starting a new relationship where the other person didn't know he was Joss Whedon as opposed to JossWhedon.

He then rewrites Speed, writes Toy Story, and marries Cole right before he starts on Buffy. Before then it looks to have been a dating desert, especially if he was a workaholic. Indeed you have to wonder how they ever hooked up: Kai Cole claims she met Whedon in 1991 when she drove into LA after a cross-country journey "on a whim" from Masschusetts. More likely she was another aspiring and roleless actress, i.e. the sort of girl Whedon had sufficient power differential over to feel relaxed and confident around.

Do you see? He doesn't think a woman can like him unless she sees him as superior. That is true of his wife as well, because once the shine has worn off, she sees past the image he wants her to see, and like that, the magic is gone. I'm not shocked this has happened. Guys do this because they can. This is the one industry in America where the "laws" of sexual harassment do not apply. It's the one business in America where co-workers still sleep with and marry other co-workers.

One thing I noticed during my days of watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer was that men were often phased out and not replaced. During the seventh season, especially, it was kind of weird with the "slayers in training" plot line. There was a lot of pussy on the set.
