A friend of mine had something similar happen to him in South America. He had just flown down 2 weeks earlier when the IRS froze his accounts due to what they claimed were "tax irregularities." He claims he had no idea what they were talking about. No forewarning at all, just tried to take money out of an ATM and it didn't work. He had just a couple hundred dollars in his wallet and took up a shitty job in the service industry to survive. 3 months later when he flew back his lawyers back home were still trying to work things out and get his accounts unfrozen.

I hear in the US they are tough with things like that, if you live overseas for extended periods of time they can cancel your bank accounts, and even your American citizenship!

Ex-pats live overseas all the time, it's normal, and you do not lose your Citizenship because you decide to ex-pat.

Only time you bank accounts are frozen in US is if you owe tax money to the IRS, or you are a flight risk for a major criminal investigation.

They can't strip your citizenship away from you. Why would they when they tax your worldwide income. ha

I have a feeling this guy didn't contact his banks before traveling. They will lock down your accounts if you don't let them know you will be accessing them in another country.

True, but this can easily be sorted in 15min with a phone call to the bank. It's happened to me twice, even when I've told them I'd be travelling.

Agreed. It's happened to me too. The bank will lock your account if they suspect fraudulent activity - such as debits from international countries.

A quick phone call to the bank fixes the problem immediately. They just need to verify it is you making those purchases.
