Where else could you do that? In South America the local gangs would have you quickly and you would be kidnapped. These criminals want this kind of high profile braggard lifestyle.

It's not smart. Those guys are usually the ones who make some high profile international bust who Thailand uses to trumpet "bad farang invading Thailand" etc.. The thought that Thailand turns a blind eye to this is a huge misconception. They turn a blind eye up until the point someone powerful can profit from their demise or when they are an "inconvenience" to them.

It fits into their political and cultural agenda as well. Remember Victor Bout? He was a guy who had a metric shit ton of international and deep state political connections and he got real sloppy and ended up being held in a dingy Thai cell while Russia and the U.S. played highest bidder with him.

Who won? Thailand.

They got to sell his ass to the highest bidder and believe me he was auctioned off behind the scenes with sweet deals from both countries being entertained.

Oh, I fully agree, they just keep these guys around to extract cash from, then they get taken out, but things are complicated because of the feudalistic system in regions and provinces. Bangkok can't just assert its will in Phuket or Koh Samui like the FBI does in the US. One of the first things the military junta did was to send their people to the islands to clean it up.

Doesn't change the fact that Thailand is a place a foreigner of shady money can live an extravagant life with little risk of being killed by criminals. They will scam the money out of people instead.

I have to admit I've been thinking alot about this case and it's been bothering me.If this had been my son I'd be crushed. If he was extradited to the U.S. he might have been able to get out of prison in 15 to 20. What a wasted life. I wonder if he really did committ suicide or was offed by someone. We'll never know.

Guys are blind to the fact that you can LIVE in Asia but you better be discrete if you're trying to get away with shit. Sure, locals will smile at you and be buddy-buddy with you as long as it suits them, but you're dealing with nations of people who were impoverished up until a few generations ago. They're cut throat as fuck. Guys forget that all the time.
I live in a middle-class chinese area and I'm painfully visible. I don't do anything and, even if I had the cash to flaunt, I wouldn't, but this is the sort of country where outsiders are "known." They may not know me like that but I'm clearly not one of them and If I were to start fooling around I could get hurt. If I got up to something illegal I'd be easy to track down if I started flaunting.

Rawmeo fucked up on a bunch of levels, especially with his criminal disregard for safety measures and managing his optics.

Marrying locally was a big fail.
Buying fast cars in his middle-class thai neighborhood was suspicious as fuck.
Owning those mansions was a big fail.
Joining this forum and bragging about all that shit was a colossal fail.

I find that last part really funny since we have some really successful men on this forum who are worth tons of money but you wouldn't know. Guys who could probably write some serious, deep datasheets that would be worthy of publishing deals--but they don't fuck around with their privacy like that and I respect that.

I don't say this to disrespect rawmeo, but for you guys thinking you can just show up in Asia and flaunt your imaginary ill-begotten gains, you're going to get fucked hard. Even in reasonably developed places like China, there is a seedy underbelly that can find you very easily if you're not careful.

Sure, everyone's smiling at you and being cool and they may be cool, but I don't really think Asia is the right place to escape to for a westerner.

The wealthy ones don't talk about walking away. Unless the money was given to them, they generally don't talk about stepping out. Sure they get some toys and have some fun, but they knew it was hard won wealth and are not eager to not have it. Also, I think the mind set to make money/wealth isn't something that can just change on a dime. Once your an alcoholic, you are always an alcoholic and it takes quite a bit of effort to get behavior under control. Same thing with the mindset to make money, to take risks, etc.

So I know a lot of guys are criticizing him for not walking away sooner. For being bad at security, etc. But this lack of worry probably allowed him to think this would be a good idea in the first place. If he wasn't like this, he wouldn't have started this business. That mentality doesn't change instantly. A double edged sword.

I may not have a lot of cash but I have a keen sense for danger. Being willing to "step out" in this scenario has nothing to do with being lazy or unmotivated and everything to do with the fact that once something grows beyond your capacity to conceal and control then you need to pack your shit and head for the door.

Yep. If you're going to try to live well, there's plenty of backwater areas in North and South America that you can fit into relatively well. If you speak the language Eastern Europe will also allow you to live very well without a huge profile.

Hell. I don't even see the point of buying all this flashy shit. Fancy clothes are only beneficial for business where you need to have a very polished brand and presentation, otherwise moderate-quality casual clothes are far easier. There's plenty of ways to enjoy luxury without drawing attention to yourself.

Still you know what the best defense against getting taken down is? It's the "Clinton Defense" where you have networked extensively with the people and groups who would be responsible for shutting you down. At a local level if you are able to successfully rack up favors in the Mayor's office, the legislature, AND the sheriff's office there isn't a lot that can touch you and it becomes much easier to conceal wealth.

I don't see how it's physically possible to hang oneself with a 4x2 towel from 2-3 feet. He was strangled by another person.
