Fact is - and the stats back it up - it's infinitely safer for a black guy to party in Greece even when surrounded by almost all white guys than to party in rough black neighborhoods in the US. This happened within 30 seconds and was more a drunken brawl.

Young men will get into brawls. Young men will die in brawls in the future and there is not much you can do about it unless we have some future high-tech of advanced medicine and safety shield/foam/nano-bot tech suit that will protect us from harm. But until then young men will die.

Also - most young men dying in Greece are in accidents, car/bike accidents, drowning, jumping into the sea and bashing your head in, slipping from rocks, taking selfies and dying while trying to get the shot of your life.

There are no KKK-gangs bashing black folk especially since most tourists coming to Greece are well-off enough and the Greeks are quite protective of them. At best they are going to overcharge you for your cab or try to scam you.

Serbia - where a black guy can feel like a celebrity and little kids come up to you and take pictures, because they see a cool black guy there.

@Zel, great post. You expressed my thoughts a lot better than I did. It is really safe. That said you will stick out if you look gypsy/ ME (much like Caucasians stick out in Russia, or people that look like them), and people will make assumptions or have very weird stereotypes, assumptions about you, b/c they interact so little with people that are different. Doesn't mean they're racist, just means they're in uncharted territory so to speak.

My experience with black Americans in the party scene of Belgrade was not at all racist. It may have been a plus, especially with guys. It may have something to do with basketball, I am not sure.

Women were a different matter though. But I was rejected harder in Belgrade than any other place in the world. So were the black Americans. Its just a much more dismissive culture and violence is more likely between Serbs themselves than any foreigner.

I did get the vibe to under no circumstances, try and fuck with one of 'their' girls. You would have to be pretty hammered to think that hitting on Serb girls clearly associated with a group of guys would be a good thing. There are seemingly endless amounts of beautiful, single, Serbian girls so this shows lack of social intelligence.

All the same, very sad story. It actually makes me a bit sick to my stomach to see a pack of grown men run down one man like that. Perhaps it is because it reminds me of how close we are to our primal ancestors, and I like to think that we are better than that.

Laner: great post man. I don't think the serbs are racist, I never heard them say anything remotely racist. Dudes that are black have high status to serb men (I can't really say anything about girls, because they would not tell me the status of black men--but, I think there's a big secret contingent of Serb women into black men). Sports play a part, there are a decent number of black athletes in serbia, and basically the serbs like them, because as foreign players they are pretty good, generally.

Re: violence, you are completely on point here.

Re: fucking with their girls--you shouldn't. They've decided that the girl is theirs (presumably serb or balkan in origin), so once that happens, you can't, unless you're with a group of balkan dudes, who you are one of the boys with. You are on point here, man.

The story is horrible. I hate the group dynamics, gang dynamics, of it. We think we're evolved, but we are always very close to the state of nature.

If it were one dude knocking out another dude, then I wouldn't care less.

I have been to the Greek Islands and the Balkans solo, had a great time in both places.

Drunk Brits are some of the most aggressive, obnoxious tourists I’ve come across. If they are wearing a “footie” jersey and drinking, just avoid them completely. Never had a problem with Serbs. Had more problems visiting the US really from black guys hurling drunken insults about “white guilt” and cracker this and that.

Only times I had a potential issue abroad were in a local bar in Santiago and a guy was angrily calling me “gringo” because I was with a Chilean girl. I was friendly and just avoided him. It almost always boils down to women, booze and/or being a foreigner in areas you should avoid. Self-control is very important in foreign countries, especially those where crimes frequently go unsolved (Colombia, Brazil).

Cultures may vary vastly around the world or even inside a small continent like Europe. When you are in your native region you know how to deal with all situations. It is never the same, it changes even inside the same country or state. When you are not in your region you have to keep in mind that it is potentially dangerous, and what you consider safe in your homeland may not be somewhere else. If the guy was killed merely based on racism, no kind of agency will tell you it is dangerous for a black person to simply walk in the streets. Even locals won't say that 'cause most people in the word are reasonable and can't or don't want to see the reality. Also even if you fit the culture you will always be seen as a second class individual simply because you are a foreigner. Lots of people are killed based on racism anywhere in the world from the Americas to Africa, Europe, East and Far East.

If you are not familiar with a region my advice is to be humble and ridiculously polite. If you are already in trouble the more you talk the worse things get.

If you look at the video footage is very hard to make the case that this guy was set upon due to race, but rather because he was being an idiot.

Of course, no one deserves to die because he's being stupid, but the fact is he put his hand (first) on a drunk guy standing next to him in a bar. Anyone should know to stay away from drunks in bars especially if their body language is looking aggressive.

The video then shows the drunk throwing a token punch in the American's chest, and then someone else is trying to intervene by standing between them. At this point the American has to be smart and just walk away from the scene or try and calm things down.

Instead, he decides he's going to start launching overhand rights on the guy. You know the rest.
It's nothing to do with racism. It's just the kind of horrible stuff that happens in bars sometimes.

If there is a lesson in it , it's don't be stupid and put your hands on drunk guys in bars. Don't throw punches when someone else is helping de-escalate the situation.
