Apparently Hitler had a list of the countries he wanted to beat. In they were ordered like this

1) France
2) England
3) Soviet Union
4) USA

He hot rid of France first, then he turned his sights on England but found that the British and Churchill would not give up. He was frustrated with how things were going in the battle of Britain so decided to skip to number 3. Had he thrown all his might to number 2 maybe Hitler would have won the war and there would have been no Western front and America would be with no reliable allies.
