I wasn't making fun of anyone, I just wouldn't want to work long hours 7 days a week/ 12 hour days with no vacations.

I was commenting on this...

Quote:I don't want to be like those "rich" guys working long hours 6 or 7 days a week. There are plenty of those guys in the West, their children aren't going to work as hard. They are going to lick their lips and secretly hope they get their inheritance soon.

When you have been too a couple of funerals and see people your age or younger dying. Then you realize life is too short and money can only do so much.

After you get to a certain point money wise, it isn't about the money.

Posts, in this thread, read like it is unfathonable to continue working when you are rich.

If we are talking lifestyle, the guys doing what they enjoy are way ahead of the guys working jobs they hate waiting for some magical retirement to happen.

Baldrich was over the top on many of his posts. Still, some of the other posts still smack with Euro smugness when it comes to how people should live.

You just don't understand because you do things for money which is ironic. You act just like Baldrich when it comes to sweeping generalizations and being obtuse. If it wasn't for guys like that millionaire you wouldn't have a job.

Why are you even working at all? Surely 5k a month is good enough to live life or whatever that means.

Since, it's my profession. Let me give you a link for you to watch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMV6lZNOb48

It's Warren Buffet's documentary by HBO. As he says there, he works 1,5 - 2 hours per day. He lives in Omaha, he has a home office. %99,9 people in the world don't have a work like that.

I'm talking about people who really work, like 12 hours. %85 of the people who work at Wall Street, live in New Jersey or Long Island since they have families. Majority of them hate working since I was one of them. Who wants to cram numbers in cubicle in middle of the summer for 12-15 hours a day when you have money and can have vacation anywhere in the world?

I spent approximately 3 years at Credit Suisse. I made $300k per year on my second year. I worked minimum 12 hours, sometimes even 18 hours. Company used to get us free hotel rooms on Park Avenue, so most people wouldn't have to go home and come back.

But when I suffered that, I had a plan on my mind. I wanted to buy 2-3 apartments in Italy, so I can rent them all. Eventually, I did. I bought 3 apartments on my own at the age of 33. Then, I quit from firm and moved back to Italy.

I have no problem for people to overwork 3 years, 5 years or even 10 years to make money to make their life comfortable. That's totally understandable.

What I dont understand is, people who are in their 50's and have $10-20 million cash in their accounts. My cousin is one example, my best friend's dad is another example, a lot of co-workers at the firm too.

You're saying that they enjoy working and they don't do it for the money. Of course, there are some people who enjoy working but those are usually people like Warren Buffet.

%95 of the people at big investment banks don't enjoy commuting 2 hours to NYC and going back 2 hours on the way back, spend all day at cubicle when it's July or August. They do not enjoy it.

They are just working more and more, to add 0 on their bank account. Thats what I really came up with.

Why am I working? I work 4 days and usually 5 hours a day. I'm constantly on the move, because I work for logistic company now. Company moves me throughout the Europe because I speak 4 languages. I don't mind working 5 hours a day, 4 day a week, while having 35 days paid vacation.

It's not the complicated. People, men in particular, get satisfaction out of doing a job well (mastery) and the identity and self-image it provides. For many, it's more fulfilling than picking up hobbies, watching TV, constant vacationing and socializing with family.

Not everyone hates number crunching, and in any event, technical skills are more prevalent earlier in one's career. Later, most people move into management, strategic planning or something less tedious but with more impact.

RE: Going back to the US: Final thoughts on Spain and Europe in general
Local economy here is tanking, then again , Europe seems to be slower and my biz is suffering directly from it.
Yes there's a lot of stuff that could be a lot better and improved blah blah but you get used to it.
Again is where you find yourself more comfortable in the end, and I'm ok down here for the time being.

My issue with OP was how he perpetuated what sounded more like bitter resentment about the land and culture as well as extending to even race, and using it as a vehicle to get on a pissing contest on all manner of derivated subjects. I even thought a complex troll maneuver could have been involved, but hey, in any event it was getting old.

I do wish the best for OP however and if he returns under another handle to go easy on the bashing.

We move between light and shadow, mutually influencing and being influenced through shades of gray...

First, I said billionaires like Warren Buffet. Not all of them are working 2 hours a day from home.

Still, Buffet will never stop working because he loves what he does. That is the whole point. You contiue talking hours when people who enjoy what they do don't think so much in those terms. For me, I just work and many times don't even realize how much time has passed.

It has never been easier to be location independent than it is today.

Quote:I have no problem for people to overwork 3 years, 5 years or even 10 years to make money to make their life comfortable. That's totally understandable.

You're willing to give up 10 years of your life for money? Sounds terrible and not what I consider living life. You continue talking about others being money focused and then say it is alright to work 12 hour days for 10 years to make money for later. You're contradicting yourself.

Quote:What I dont understand is, people who are in their 50's and have $10-20 million cash in their accounts. My cousin is one example, my best friend's dad is another example, a lot of co-workers at the firm too.

Yes, you keep saying that. I already said why some people continue to work. You can't seem to grasp it because you are money focused. You sure you're not American? Wink

I'll take your word on it since I haven't worked nor know anyone in those fields. That is still a small amount of people in the grand scheme of things.

I agree that consumerism is a problem in the US. It sounds like millenials are changing that. I know boomers have been the worst and it has gotten better every generation afterward.

When you get older, like the 60 year old millionaire, you really need something to keep the mind engaged. It is as important as keeping up in the gym.

Part of being happy is having something to look forward too. I would get bored sitting on a beach drinking beers. I may last a couple of days and then would look for something to do and be productive.

I'm a creator. I have always been that way since I was a kid drawing and painting. It never gets old for me and the thought of endless vacationing doesn't appeal to me. I get excited when I build something and people pay me thousands of dollars for it.

Overworking: 70 hours or more
Working like a human: 35-40 hours
Working like me: 20 hours

I never said rich people should quit from work. Do you understand that? Why are you giving me examples like Warren Buffet? Dude is working 2 hours per day from home. If that's the case, I can work until I am 110 years old.

I am talking about normal people, who wake up to catch train at 7.30 am on Long Island, take a ride for 2 hours to New York City, then take another subway to Wall Street. These people spend 2 to 4 hours only on commuting. Equals more than Warren Buffet works in a day. Hence, real working people.

Warren Buffet or CEO of companies don't do this pal. They go to Hamptons with helicopter. Therefore, don't give me examples about Warren Buffet or ceo of JP Morgan.

Even if I have $500 millions, I might consider to work 2-3 hours a day from home or from office. This is not something I disagree with. I never said people should quit altogether.

I'm talking about %95 of the people who are rich and still overwork. I just gave you example of my best friend's father. He has $20 millions in his bank, he is 66 years old. He didn't have 1 week vacation in past 7 years to go to his apartment in Miami.

He's 66 years old. He has $20 millions in his bank. He has a summer place in Miami but yet, he can't take 1 week off from his work, even though he's the owner of the restaurant. Why is this?

And then, he comments on my facebook pictures from Athens, saying he wishes "to go to Greece." Because he loves history.

Ok dude, go to Greece. Who's stopping you? You own the restaurant, you dont have to go ask your boss for vacation time. You got money too. What's the problem in here?

Why do you still work when you don't need too? You continue to evade that question. 5k a month in rents not enough for you? Do you work more because you are greedy?

Most Americans don't work 70 hours a week. The average full time is around 47 hours a week.

Quote:I never said rich people should quit from work. Do you understand that? Why are you giving me examples like Warren Buffet? Dude is working 2 hours per day from home. If that's the case, I can work until I am 110 years old.

You are either being obtuse or your English needs work or you just can't understand the context or all of the above.

Here is the context.

Quote:I am talking about normal people, who wake up to catch train at 7.30 am on Long Island, take a ride for 2 hours to New York City, then take another subway to Wall Street. These people spend 2 to 4 hours only on commuting. Equals more than Warren Buffet works in a day. Hence, real working people.

Again, average full time is 47 hours a week. You are looking at a small minority of people and making some broad exaggerations. You are no better than Baldrich in this regard.

Quote:Warren Buffet or CEO of companies don't do this pal. They go to Hamptons with helicopter. Therefore, don't give me examples about Warren Buffet or ceo of JP Morgan.

CEO's don't work a lot of hours? lol My understanding is CEO's work on average 58 hours.

Quote:I'm talking about %95 of the people who are rich and still overwork. I just gave you example of my best friend's father. He has $20 millions in his bank, he is 66 years old. He didn't have 1 week vacation in past 7 years to go to his apartment in Miami.

I have already explained why some do yet you have a hard time understanding. I honestly don't get why you can't comprehend what I have written.

Quote:He's 66 years old. He has $20 millions in his bank. He has a summer place in Miami but yet, he can't take 1 week off from his work, even though he's the owner of the restaurant. Why is this?

Why was Baldrich banned?

God damned them all, I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold, we'd fire no guns-shed no tears, now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier, the last of Barrett's privateers!

Who says I don't need to work? I need to. 5k isn't enough for me. Plus, I work 4 days. It doesn't bother me at all. You still didn't understand my question and probably never will. My question is to people who overwork when they're filthy rich. 5k a month isn't considered a filthy rich. If I have $20 million in my bank, I wouldn't probably work %99.

I'm talking about 66 year old guy who has $20 million and I ask, "Why does this dude still work?"

You're telling me, you make 5k, why are you still working?

I'm talking to someone who knows little difference between 5k per month vs $20 million cash.

(06-09-2017 12:57 AM)worldwidetraveler Wrote:  Most Americans don't work 70 hours a week. The average full time is around 47 hours a week.

And, who cares about average Americans? Average Americans can't stop working because most of them are in debt. I'm talking about rich dudes. Why are you talking about average Americans? Average American doesn't have $20 million cash in the bank to begin with. My question is for rich Americans.

Quote:Again, average full time is 47 hours a week. You are looking at a small minority of people and making some broad exaggerations. You are no better than Baldrich in this regard.

Who cares about average American? Yes, I'm looking for small minority people since I've worked with them. I don't care about rest of the Americans who are in debt. Of course, they will continue to work.

Quote:CEO's don't work a lot of hours? lol My understanding is CEO's work on average 58 hours.

How many CEO's do you know in Wall Street? lol

Your understanding is clearly wrong. They don't work at all, maybe 2-3 hours a day. Spending 8-10 hours in the office doesn't really mean they are working. Those office hours usually include lunch and dinners at "Michelin Star Restaurants"

Average working hour is 52 hours for Italians. Go believe that as well. We spend usually 3 hours on lunch, cappuccino, coffee, chit-chat break.

Quote:I have already explained why some do yet you have a hard time understanding. I honestly don't get why you can't comprehend what I have written.

You didn't explain anything. You said they enjoy working, which they don't. Who the hell would enjoy crunching numbers in July under 90 heat in Manhattan especially when they're rich and they can go anywhere to have vacation? I worked there 3 years. Nobody enjoys working in cubicle at investment banks, unless you're CEO. So, your explanation is wrong.

Restaurant owner guy wakes up Wednesday's at 4 am to go to market for buy steak in bulk and fish since they arrive from Japan. You should go talk to him to see if he really "likes" his work. Because I rented his apartment and he was cursing out every morning he woke up. So, %95 of the people don't enjoy what they are doing.

Quote:He can take off and go whenever he wants. He just doesn't want too.

How do you know? Guy wrote "I wish to go to Greece, I love history" under my picture on Facebook. How do you know that "he doesnt want to."? If he doesn't want to, he wouldn't tell me that he wishes to go. I mean, I know the guy for 17 years. I think I know him better than you. He's a guy who didn't take 1 week vacation in 7 years and he says I'd love to go to Miami.

Exactly, you never worked at Wall Street and you probably won't ever understand how people hate working but continue to work. In your mind, they all love at what they do and that's why they are working. Sure, of course lol

Rossi has clearly explained himself and given examples.

The passive aggressive backhanded personal digs are lame.

I'm asking simple question as, why rich people are still working when they're actually old and have crazy money

This guy is telling me average American works 40 something hours? Ok, that wasn't my question. I don't care about average American. Of course, they will work because average American doesn't have money to last few months to pay the mortgage.

I lived in Manhattan. I was paying $3500 for studio and worked at Wall Street. I didn't know many average Americans because they wouldn't live in Manhattan to pay $3500 rent.

As I found out more and more from my friends, some of those rich people are addicted to work since all they ever did was working. They don't have many hobbies, most of them are horrible with money, they usually get hooker or try to be sugar daddy with girls.

I think, when they get to 60's, since they spent previous 35 years only working, they don't know how to live the life and they just continue to do whaty they do best: working.

My cousin is one of them.

And many spent a lot in Cocaine and other "stimulants" to get on working those long hours.
Certainly a very healthy and fulfilling lifestyle.

Coke was like tylenol for us at Wall Street.

You cannot work efficiently 15-18 hours a day for 5 days without taking a coke. I didn't work many many years, I only worked 3 years there but we lost one Japanese kid and one American guy from overdose at the firm.

I don't know who pays for those but I would say %90 of the people use it at one point who work at Wall Street.

It's either you do coke or you break and quit. I don't know if I have any friends who never used it.

But of course, we had new guys coming to work every day but most of them would quit in couple of months. Maybe they would say they never tried it. I have a friend who works at JP Morgan in London, I never worked in London but he says things are way worse off there.

Read one page of this thread, then read another page of the "Is there any reasons NOT to expatriate from USA" thread, rinse and repeat.

I didnt know a hamster wheel can run both ways.

There is an old expression which continues to ring true: The grass is always greener on the other side.

Having spent decades on both continents I can attest to the fact that each country has its advantages and disadvantages. It's up to you to decide what works for you and where you feel the most happy. Sometimes that also depends on your personal goals, your financial status, even your age. When I was a young buck moving to L.A in the 1990s it was awesome turf for me. Hot pussy wherever I looked and anything seemed possible for an ambitious and hard working white man.

Today, not so much anymore, politically the country turned into a train wreck (I moved pre-Trump but voted for him via mail-in) and living cost kept doubling every few years. Which is why I moved my ass to Spain a few years ago and started to learn the language. The first year or two were the toughest but I didn't give up and slowly got settled in. Doesn't mean I'll stay here forever though. The Spaniards most definitely are suffering from a socialist streak bordering the communist, so politically speaking I'm completely incompatible with 90% of the population. The girls over here are world class ball breakers and I'm sure I don't have to regurgitate the impact the feministas have had on the lives of Spanish men.

In some respect I very much miss the United States (and especially my guns!!) and I'm sure I'll be back by the end of this decade, especially if it looks like Trump is getting a 2nd term. I'll be old enough to consider early retirement then and most likely I'll just find myself a nice little farm somewhere near a forest and some hunting areas.

^ Can you talk more about the Españolas attitudes? Are we talking like fat girl too-good-for-you attitude like in the EEUU? Is it traditional or a recent creation of the media/education system? How bad is it compared to the Anglosphere?
