Moscow is fricking expensive - take it from people who’ve actually lived there, not from some “index”. You can choose to live in the slums/outskirts of Moscow, not go out and pay its associated costs, and buy everything on the cheap to survive but then you can do that anywhere. Moscow is expensive my friend.

Because Moscow is so big you can approach it in different ways. If you want to live bang in the middle of the city even an average small apartment will cost you 100k RUB long-term rental. If you do not mind a 20-30min metro commute you can probably cut that in half. Another thing is if you are into fine dining and nightlife the differences between Kiev and Moscow are huge. In Kiev 50USD per person will get you a long way in the fanciest restaurants, in Moscow there are places where that will get you a starter and a bottle of sparkling water! Same with nightlife, I totally understand if people are not into bottle service (esp. in Kiev) but if you wanna do it 200-400USD will normally get you a table even at the "fancier" places like Chi. In Moscow there are many places where the cost is double or more. Same goes for drinks in "classy" bars.

So if you find a small apartment outside of the city centre in, stay away from fancy bars, clubs and restaurants Moscow does not have to be that expensive. Supermarkets and local restaurants are surprisingly cheap.

You can live for 500$/month, rent included, if you live like a broke student.

Or for 10k$ if you want to have a dope apartment and bang nines and dimes.

The top is just as expensive as anywhere else but the bottom is more fun than anywhere else.

Probably not that cheap as you still have many places that cater to the rich but it is true that with the ruble so low atm, Moscow is quite affordable.

I went to pretty decent restaurants in fancy areas of Moscow e.g. at the top of one of the financial district towers, and had dinner for 2 for around 50 USD.

I have a location independent income and have been living in Kiev for quite some time, but haven't yet been to Moscow.

I have a very comfortable lifestyle; restaurants for almost every meal, taxis everywhere, nice apartment, taking girls on dates, designer clothing, nightclubs, bars, etc etc.

I realise that if I moved to Moscow my living standards might drop a bit, but I think it would be ok because the problem with Ukraine and the low prices is that it makes you lazy, I don't push myself quite as hard as I should with my business because I know I can work only 3 hours a day to be able to afford my present lifestyle. If I lived in Moscow it could push me to work harder and use my time more wisely.

I love Kiev, but Moscow is just way cooler.

It's like New York compared with Chicago.

The Windy City is great, but it's no New York.
