The ammunition is what's heavy as fuck. 35 pounds per 100 round can. So leave 500 rounds at each permanent mount firing point and move the gun where you need it, depending on where they're coming from. Mark the barrel with the number of clicks back for correct headspace and timing, or just leave the barrel installed. You could easily have the gun in action in less than 2 minutes if you didn't have to haul it all the way from one end of the ship to the other.

I'd probably want at least one M2HB and one M240. Then carbines for supporting fire, or in case the pirates got so close the machineguns couldn't depress and hit them.

Some claymores strapped to the side of the boat aiming down at a 45 degree angle wouldn't hurt either, but I doubt the shipping company would go for that.

Going all out

If I was in the pirate game, I'd have two dinghys approach at first to draw attention/fire, with another to arrive a minute or so later from another direction - objective being to to get guys on board whilst the ship is distracted by the other two.

What they employed was 2/10 pirate game.

I think they should at least go for something with style.

Four or five smaller dinghies with parasailers in tow would have a certain shock and awe effect. It would also give them a raised firing platform, and once they were close enough they could detach from the towlines and glide onto the deck like winged condors of economic justice!

Thats some next level pirate game

RE: Somali Pirates Mess with the Wrong Ship
This is a fun thread

quick thoughts:

1. I think that an RPG would be a really dumb weapon to use from a dingy. Why?

Backblast. The RPG would have to be used almost parallel with the water to avoid the backblast seriously messing up the dingy. This then severely limits the range. Then you factor in they are moving quickly, on waves, etc... and the variance would make it a very risky shot for low payoff. My suspicions only so please correct me. On a larger wooden vessel maybe, but those can't really ambush like a dingy.

2. If the floor of the dingy could stand it, 60mm mortars would be great for the pirates to use. They could putter around at 1000m, out of range of the pathetic M4s, then aim at a huge area target using a very low charge or at a relatively low angle. Use some smoke and High Explosive and if you got just a couple hits it would at least highly disrupt the security guys on board, then move in for the takedown. Perhaps use a bigger mothership to launch the mortars. With the waves this is very inaccurate, but again, area target, and you only need a few hits before you move in for the kill

3. .50 Cal plus ammo would be way too cumbersome. Even M240 or PKM (both 7.62mm) would only be good if you had lots of security guys because you need two to operate it properly. That's why it's called a crew served weapon. A M249 (smaller calibre light machine gun, not crew served) would work very well, especially with a mount.

I think we should start a company!

(security company, not a pirate enterprise)

EDIT: potential problem with claymores is the wiring. You're at sea and any wiring will rust very quickly. The overall concept is genius though. Perhaps just drop short fuse grenades overboard?

You know that old movie, Swiss Family Robinson, had some great anti-pirate measures. I will revisit that movie and get back to you all.

I agree...

On top of that these guys likely aren't a full-time security solution for this specific boat. They probably board just before the ship passes through the pirate-infested area and then get off once it's done and get on another ship to make the route back.

Considering the rules of engagement they appear to be under where they aren't allowed to engage until the last second, the M4 seems like a fine choice. On top of that if enough pirates were able to board and the ship turned into a close-quarters combat environment they want something that isn't going to destroy the ship they're on and be suitable for CQB.

Claiming these guys should be dragging .50's on and off the different ships they go to or bringing heavier weapons is clearly overkill for pretty much the entirety of the threats they are expected to face.

The gear they're using is fine.

I suppose as a last and final resort if the pirates actually managed to board the ship the first mate could tell them there's not enough seats and call the United flight cops if they refused to leave. After all. Desperate times call for desperate measures...

I've got it.

You just start using these drone ships:http://spectrum.ieee.org/transportation/...lmost-here

Then, when the Somali pirates come on board, you have the ships rigged to explode. After a few times the word gets around that pirates are out of business.

Interesting how automated cabs are gonna come about soon. Lots of Somali cab drivers. These guys need to come up with some new lines of work.

Torpedos? More like a Carl Gustaf with canister rounds*. That's my style.

It's not hard to run either an M240 or M2HB with one person, if you're working from a fixed position. Crew served weapons like medium machineguns are really only crew served because it takes more than one person to carry all the gear and ammo on foot. If you're running the weapon for like an hour you're going to be slightly more efficient with 2 guys, I suppose, but it won't matter for a short engagement.

If you set me up on a ship with an M2HB and a can of API/API-T I'd have that crappy little pirate boat sunk by my third burst. Fourth, tops.

TEAM PIRATE here.

Let's use aerial drones to safely hold ships hostage and collect the ransom cash. Added perk, the much pursued Somalian flag.

"I can count on one hand, literally, the number of women I have ever met that can take that kind of advice, accept it and make use of it without their epic egos setting metaphorical fire to the conversation.

Most women "looking for advice" are in reality looking for someone to validate their cosmic victimhood, because it's not really their fault, because it's never their fault. This behavioural trait isn't absent among men, but when we fail society cares not, while when women fail there is no shortage of comforting platitudes on offer from every vector.

Somali pirates attempt to swarm and board an unknown ship at night. The ship turns out to be a US Naval vessel, and they attempt to flee after being fired upon.

I'd rather them have some sort of attack helicopter on the deck of boats so you could chase those fucks down before they claim "refugee status" in North America

RE: Somali Pirates Mess with the Wrong Ship
The pirates frankly depend on unsuspecting blue-eyed ships.

As soon as companies and wealthy folk start arming themselves it is game over.

[Image: 1200px-MYEclipse-Frederikshavn-Denmark.JPG]

If the paltry Somali pirates attack mega-yachts like this, then they can expect a veritable hellfire reigning down on them. Those yachts have anti-missile defense systems, I am sure that they have mobile heavy machine guns.

The Somali pirates are frankly at a major disadvantage against virtually every boat out there with the exception of some small sailing boats and moronic SJWs who think that all cultures are equal.

Just checked it out and of course you have reports of such morons getting captured:

[Image: article-2071108-0F1B4B7100000578-731_634x350.jpg]

I would be armed to my teeth in many of those waters. A modern military-grade assault rifle would already spell disaster for those Somali pirates. I would simply kill them all and then sail off into the sunshine. It is not as if you can really contact any authorities there. You want to sail to the next port to other Somali pirates and report the incident?

Joke is on the Navy soldiers.

Some of the pirates are probably already in Minnesota living off their taxpayer money and popping out dozens of kids.

A lot of those yachts in that part of the world are owned by Arabs.

The somalis know that when it comes time to hire some jihadis they are at the top of the list. They don't want to bite the hand that feeds them. Its bad for your jihadi resume to interrupt the sheik when he trying to poop on Kylie Jenner.

Carl G has a flechette round. Ranges might be a little far though. The goose is one of my favorite things but getting a clear back blast area would be a bitch on a ship. A 240L with the short barrel or the new General Dynamics 240 in 338 Norma would be the shit. The western world has been dealing with assholes like these since Thomas Jefferson and the Barbary pirates. It's not rocket surgery.

Anyone claiming to be a pirate who doesn't speak of shivering timbers, walking planks, buckling of swashes, all liberally peppered with 'arrr' or variations thereof, can fuck off as far as I'm concerned.

In all seriousness, I approve of any story where these bastards run up against good men ready to splatter them across the bows.

As far as the weapon choices and lack of expensive optics - my understanding is the guns are deep-sixed before the ship comes into harbor (I remember seeing a very similar video years ago).

the explanation for the lack of security on cargo ships being that it's fine in international waters but contraband when you dock. something like an AR15 is cheap and ubiquitous enough to buy in bulk and dump when you're finished with it.

This and the original video sadden me.

Why are there so many warning shots? It is clear that the pirates have bad intentions(maybe trolling the navy) and if they can't get this shit they will get the next.

Blow them the fuck out of the water and its done. The west always looks so weak.
