Exactly, this guy knows what is up, when in a threathening situation, hands should always be up and just doing so signals strongly that you're on to the aggressors intent. The agressor knows this. Keeping hands at your side is the same as saying "please assault me".

Keep your left hand up (if right dominant) and put it out across you open hand, like how an MMA fighter will use it to deflect incoming blows, while making a fist of your right. It also serves as strongly demarcating personal space. No further.

It also helps to live a year or two in a neighborhood with packs of savages, but most people don't want that for understable reasons. I did though and found a good mindset to adopt was along the lines of "my broken nail is worth more than your life". Hyenas and jackals go for the weak and run off when faced even with mock resistance.

The worst thing you can is not be aware or think that you are not allowed to be aware because it is racist or discriminatory or some nonsense. You bet I cross the road if someone I perceive as a risk comes along. They cross the road, it is a clear sign of bad intent. If I hear footsteps, I stop, turn around and watch. I deal with all non-civilized people asking for something in the same way I deal with touts, ignore or shake head and keep walking, if they enter my path, make eye contact, hold it, keep walking.

The hand on my chin can deflect against a sudden head butt or punch. My right hand is balled into a fist, so if I need to deflect, I can follow with a right.

That is the same technique I've been told. Left hand at the chin, right hand down since I'm right dominant. If the situation escalates, your front is protected. The left hand is already very high up so you can block, also your chin can instantly tuck down and your shoulder rise up. What I also do is to turn my body ever so slightly so the left side is facing the aggressor. Don't overdo it, it's a very slight turn. But this way you're reducing your profile and also are much closer to a standard attacking position for you to do hip turns when you throw punches.

I respect everything here in terms of self defense but three things matter-Size(gym time put in), Experience(practice put in), Awareness. I also carry a gun, I am 6'4 260 so people come in groups to give me problems.
