I read that back in the day (100 to 1000 years ago) nutrient deficiencies in people in winter time (due to lack of food) and/or long term fasting for religious reasons causes people to have visions.

What is fascinating however, is that in the past different people (living in the same place) had visions of more or less the exact same demons. That is why they started putting them in their temples and churches...cause many different people saw very similiar things at different times.

Visions of Virgin Mary were probably induced by mushrooms. These caves associated with this visions were ancient shamanistic places that had plenty of mushrooms and it is big possibility hungry and sickly children had eaten them and experienced collective experience.

In fact, studying cultures around the world and what their actual notions of "magic and sorcery were", it's actually arguable that many fringe sciences and technologies are more or less a modern version of "witchcraft" or socerery". Demonic possession for example, wasn't viewed as a literal physical demon with a pitchfork 'possessing people', but was more of a way of explaining mental illness and how abnormal thought processes could 'possess' people's minds and make them behave erratically.

When most people think of "magic" today, they think of a magician waving a magic wand, but actually it seems that a lot of older cultures didn't view "magic" as something literally "supernatural", as in contradicting the laws of physics.

They viewed it more as fringe uses of technology or knowledge for deviant ends or practices, a la Josef Mengele's scientific experiments. It's also worth nothing that modern sciences such as chemistry descended from alchemy, and astronomy from astrology. (Technology in the broadest sense, doesn't just include 'electronics' or high technology, but any form of applied science, such as psychological or media manipulation).

So the notion of a "hard distinction" between "magic and science" is actually fallacious, and more of just a modern notion.

I've been reading about this on and off for a while.

When I was in Peru I stopped by Paracas and visited a musuem where you can see some of these skulls in person. It's co-managed by a guy named Brian Foerster, an alternative historian who has appeared on the History Channel's Ancient Aliens and other programs.

His argument was more or less that the Paracas culture practiced cranial deformation but that it was perhaps inspired an earlier civilzation that represented an extinct phenotype of humans (deep auburn hair- not a trait indigenous Peruvians are known for) and possible skulls that were naturally elongated. In the case of the Paracas people, different skull shapes corresponded with different social castes/roles.

He also did some work with this guy L.A. Marzulli who is on youtube, and approaches the skulls from the Biblical/Nephelim angle.

There was a cute girl from a local university there studying the skulls to take DNA samples, but I'm not sure if anything has come of it. Running tests on ancient DNA is aparently extremely expensive. And no- I did not get the bang.

Interesting thread, but it's an unorganised amalgamation of many different fringe theories ranging from demons to DMT to alien beings in ancient Egypt so it's unsurprising most responses here are very skeptical.

Some posters here don't even believe in "conspiracy theories" which have far more physical evidence to support them:

Regarding the LHC - it's clear that even some CERN scientists are hopeful that this sort of event could happen which gives me pause given their level of expertise in this field. But at the same time there's still the chance that anything unpredicted could happen, and just as much likelihood that nothing could happen at all.

Just to play the devil's advocate (no pun intended). Many people are saying these "entities" from DMT or psilocybin mushroom trips could be demons etc deceiving us. What's to say that what you believe as "God" is not an illusion/deception by some entity? Are we really so smart and knowledgeable about esoteric realms if they do even exist, to know that the abrahamic God is truly "the" benevolent, omnipotent loving creator of the universe? Remember in the Old Testament that this "God" proved his existence with magic tricks. Turning sticks into snakes. Lighting wood without a match, parting the sea etc. Local and very specific things.

Even more recently, Our Lady of Fatima caught my interest. I researched this incident because I actively seek a single piece of evidence of a single supernatural thing (which I've yet to find). The "skeptic" explanation for this experience was supposedly sun-gazing causing hallucinations (since people saw the sun dancing and change colors). I think this explanation is unsatisfactory, but again what really happened at least to me remains unknown. It's easy to accept one explanation or the other (a miracle by Mary, or sun-gazing), but perhaps the truth is something else entirely. Why would an omnipotent God not change the sun for the entire world to see for those few moments? Why just within a 16 mile radius or so? This shows the sun didn't actually do anything, but that it was a local illusion, if it even did happen. And a poor illusion at that. Why something so insignificant as the sun changing colors and spinning? This was the supposed "miracle" that occurred on the third day. Why would the master and creator of the universe make a spinning sun the great miracle to show the 100,000 people or so in attendance? If this really did happen, this sounds to me more like the work of an entity, good or bad, but one that isn't as powerful as it says it is.

I was born a Christian but after intense self-reflection I saw atheism/agnostic skepticism as the only logical path to take. This wasn't out of any hatred to God, I very much wanted him to exist. I'd be happy if a god, "God" or eternal being existed, but I have yet to see a single piece of evidence showing such. I thought throughout the first 20 years of my life that the evidence was extensive, but upon true, inner impartial examination, I found that not a single piece of that evidence was actually demonstrably true beyond a reasonable doubt. How about the language of tongues? Why would two people interpret the same message differently, or why can't two people in separate rooms receive the same message? There is no controlled, double-blind evidence that I've come across to prove any type of supernaturalism, anywhere. I'm very much open to being proven wrong, but I'm skeptical given how most people are unable to genuinely search for the truth, instead preferring to bring their biases into their search and reach their predictable conclusions (which happens on a subconscious level if you don't actively seek out to remain impartial subconsciously).

I think science is also severely flawed, given lack of replication, publication bias, biased funding, data fabrication, and cargo cult mentality. I've yet to see however a better system than the scientific method to understand reality.

It's easy to jump to conclusions that "your God" is the one true God. To think that the ancient Greeks were just unlucky, and that "your God" is any more real than Zeus was to them, in my opinion is complete lunacy. What if neither of them existed, what if both of them existed, and what if both of them were the same entity? Three interesting possibilities to examine.

I've had two psilocybin mushroom trips so far, and the 2nd trip did in fact make me believe at the time that there were other real entities communicating with me. Now that I'm sober, I'm more inclined to believe it was just hallucination, but again I remain open to anything if the evidence presents itself. Perhaps evolution does have a path, and the 5HT-2A receptor is more than just its organic constituent atoms serving a specific social purpose via serotonin pathways. My experience with mushrooms was just too interesting and specific to dismiss as mere hallucination, such that I'm open to the possibility evolution does have a pre-determined path. I realize this is against modern scientific opinion. I'm simply open to the possibility, I don't actively believe it.

I'd never for a minute pretend to "know" the answer either way. Or state that "this one book contains all the answers". We are simple creatures and easy to mislead, despite however much we think something is true. I believe truth is more likely to be found by being humbled by that realization.
