At least three people are dead and 20 are injured after a driver ploughed through Melbourne’s Bourke Street Mall, running over pedestrians as the car sped down the iconic shopping strip.

Witnesses say a driver ploughed through the busy mall for a distance of two blocks from Flinders St to Swanston St at speeds of at least 60km/h, leaving a "mass of bodies" in his wake.

Pedestrians fled the footpath into shops to avoid the car as it ran down pedestrians.

"There was a car that just sped along the footpath and hit people," a witness told police at the scene.

A driver allegedly responsible for hitting pedestrians in Melbourne’s CBD has been filmed doing burnouts on the street.



A man dressed only in red underwear has been arrested at the Elizabeth St end of the mall, and Ambulance Victoria is treating at least 20 people.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the exact circumstances of the event are still being determined but the situation is now under control.

"We will provide further information when it comes to hand," the spokeswoman said.

CCTV shows an older model maroon red Commodore driving in wild circles outside Flinders St station, missing pedestrians by centimetres just before 1.40pm.

He then deliberately drove into the Bourke St mall and drove into pedestrians, police said.

Video taken from a convenience store then shows a horde of people rushing frantically inside as the car rampages down the footpath.

An overturned baby pram has been photographed at the scene, with one witness telling Sky News the infant – believed to be "three or four" – "may not have made it". Those reports are yet to be verified.

In a bizarre coincidence, the former Victorian police commissioner Christine Nixon, was on the scene. The driver reportedly missed Ms Nixon by a metre and the former top cop helped direct traffic in the chaotic minutes after the carnage.

A mother was reportedly asking Ms Nixon, “Where is my baby? Where is my baby?” Ms Nixon reportedly answered, “I don’t know”.

Witness Matthew Edwards has told nine.com.au that he saw the "car had come up on to the footpath and ran people over for a block or two."

"Someone was hit out the front of Myer and another person was laying on the ground in a pool of blood in front of the Commonwealth building.

"Police were stopping people from going any further, saying 'you don't want to go up there' which means it much have been pretty bad."

Mr Edwards said witnesses were quick to grab their mobile phones as police swarmed on the area while paramedics treated victims.

"People were making a human barricade around a lady bleeding on the footpath. She was laying on her stomach – there was blood everywhere."

He said the car had mowed people down in the exact place he was standing only moments earlier. Another witness said they saw the driver "doing burnouts, screaming to a lot of people...it's like something out of a movie."

He let the woman go then decided to go on a rampage. We got text messages from friends also in the CBD telling us not to go outside because a shooter was on the loose and the area was on lock down. Also I'd be very surprised if he was Muslim considering he's from Windsor, that neighbourhood is lily white. I've never met a Muslim who lived in the inner south east, they're all in the outer suburbs like Dandenong, Broadmeadows etc. This being Melbourne he's probably Italian or Greek if he's swarthy. Hell based on the area he could be Jewish but I don't know any Jews who'd be caught dead driving an old Holden.

First I heard of this was my mum messaging me to say she's OK. Turns out she was right there when it happened. Apparently he was arrested outside a dentist where she was going for an appointment, arriving just seconds after he was caught.

As confronting as a baby getting mown down and killed in a busy mall is, it doesnt hit as hard as knowing someone close to you was seconds away from something so awful.

Yeah it's been confirmed he's Greek. Dimitrious Gargasoulas. Apparently he has a history of mental health and drug problems and is well known to police.

I knew it wasn't a terrorist as soon as I heard he turned onto Bourke Street from Swanston. A terrorist would have planned this to do as much damage as possible, and driven down Bourke from the edge of the CBD so that they'd be going fastest between Elizabeth and Swanston where the Mall is busiest. Or better, just driven down the footpath on the western side of Swanston itself. That side of Swanston is the busiest bit of land in the entire city and packed with people from morning till dusk, too packed for everyone to be able to jump out of the way like people did on Bourke. It's lucky this guy was a moron and probably didn't plan his spree out that much or he could have killed an order of magnitude more people than he actually did, including yours truly.

What's more, a genuine martyrdom attack has to involve the death of the jihadi or it doesn't count. Typically they'll at least bring a machete and force the cops to shoot them down.

I'm usually the first to jump on Islam with both feet, and an imam might have been the one that pushed him over the edge but this smacks more of a psychosis induced by prolonged drug use.

A lot of psychotics latch onto extreme religiosity as it can sort of minimize the strangeness of what they're going through.

Most of the ones I've dealt with in mental health centers latch onto Christian imagery, and don't become murderous.

It would make sense that individuals who are more violent would latch onto Islam.

This attack appears to be someone who had serious mental health issues who may have attempted to increase his self-perceived importance by connecting himself with Islam.

But that still doesn't discount 1400 years of attack on non-Muslims by Islam, and the explicit writings in Islam that advocate religious domination by any and all means.

Did he even try to connect himself to Islam? He's Christian, all of his rantings about religion said God not Allah. He brought a Bible to the house when he stabbed his brother. One person out of hundreds heard him say Allah Akbar. Makes me suspect he has an over-active imagination, which is much more common than you think in these situations. Eye witness evidence is actually the least reliable form of evidence.

The dude got in an argument with his brother and stabbed him in the head and chest, so badly that one would assume his brother would die and he'd be arrested for murder. He takes the woman (his mother?) witness as a hostage but she escaped (he didn't release her as was said before). The police chase him into the CBD but then back off because it's too crowded to safely execute a chase there, instead they send in a helicopter to hover over him and called in a SWAT team (this is why they were around so quickly after the carnage broke out). He tries to drive down Little Collins Street but realizes its small and too slow, so he decides to head down the busy pedestrian mall instead. So he literally decided in the spur of the moment to go out in flames and maybe get killed rather than get arrested for murder and kidnap. Everything about what happened points to a snap decision. Terrorism is violence towards civilians to achieve political aims. What political aim does this serve?

So fucking sick of the "mental illness" excuse.

What really happened in all likelihood:
- This guy ignored a billion warnings about drugs, started doing pot and then pingers, and moved from these gateway drugs onto worse stuff like ice (meth) and heroin.
- He had multiple chances to slow down or try and quit, but he refused.
- He was already a shitbag before drugs and he became a bigger one afterwards.

This guy deserves no sympathy for having drug issues. He made a series of choices and unfortunately others paid for it.

I also doubt he's full Greek. I suspect he's one of those kids whose mother and father came from non-white and European backgrounds respectively. It doesn't really matter but 99% of Greeks do not look like him.

He looks like Nick Kyrgios, the tennis player, whose dad is Greek and whose mother is Malaysian.

I think the definition of terrorism is using violence or the threat of violence to achieve a political goal. So, unless this guy had a specific political goal in mind, I'd say it doesn't qualify.

Not really, because the place is still basically a fucking prison. You don't have race wars in lockup, you just have areas of the exercise yard where certain pigmentations hang out and which you avoid.
