The weight born by infantry level soldiers hasn't changed since the Middle Ages. Assault rifles provide a weight reduction that is in turn wasted on more radio batteries for the outdated connectivity technology used by conventional modern forces.

Since when did an infantry unit need a (radio)? This just opens the door to more monitoring by Big Brother. It's a slippery slope.

Don't train soldiers to radio HQ asking for permission. Teach soldiers to operate independently without oversight, micro-management and responsibility for their in theater actions. That's how you win a war.

It's time for a return to the battle rifle. Enough of this "I had to use an entire magazine on him because of this 5.56 doesn't pierce alligator skin" stupidity. Let's make men out of marines.

You do realize the AK is in the same league as the AR-15, right? It shoots an intermediate power cartridge that also doesn't fly very far, just like AR15. And its effectiveness and reliability has been greatly exaggerated. Here are the mud tests for AKM and AR-15:







Radio is not used to ask HQ for permission. Rules of engagement (ROE) are established prior to entering the theater of war. It is used to coordinate with other units, to report the situation, to outflank the enemy, to ask for fire support for when an infantry platoon encounters an enemy tank division. For medevac.
Any weight savings are usually compensated for with additional ammo load--in WW2 American battle load was 64 rounds. In Vietnam, with M14--140 rounds. Vietnam, with M16--210 rounds, and 500 additional loose ammo in pouch that could be loaded.

Standard combat load gradually increased from ~40lbs in medieval times to around 50-60 lbs at start of WW1. By end of WW1 it increased to 70-90 lbs. WW2 increased to 80-100 lbs.
Today--140 lbs. Paratroopers may carry more.

Currently, USAMU is developing a new 6.5mm round, .264 USA. It looks to be close ballistically to 6.5 Creedmoor, which outranges 7.62 NATO. It directly addresses the external and terminal ballistic issues of 5.56 in Afghanistan.
This will create that battle rifle you want, but will further increase the weight because the rifle will be larger than AR-15, though smaller than AR-10. And generals will not allow to carry less ammo.
