Pipeline capacity has to be expanded and not just for oil. If you look at a satellite night pic, you will see areas over the Bakken and Permian shale basin areas lit up at night. The light is from natural gas being flared off. The gas has no value because the pipeline capacity isn't available to get it to market. 40% of all the natural gas extracted in the USA is wasted by flaring it away.

We are posed to be a major energy exporter within the next five years. The technology to turn gas into liquid fuels (GTL) improved dramatically. Shell and Sasol both have plans to build plants in Louisiana, but shelved them when the price of oil dropped (you need $60+ light crude to make it worth it). Exxon developed a process with Gigamethanol corp to turn natural gas into methanol (can be shipped with crude oil) then convert it to gasoline.

Wow that is really crappy to waste it, I'm guessing it's not feasible financially to turn it into CNG and ship it out? What happens if the natty gas isn't flared, or they can't "cap" it off somehow?

We have I think around 5 LNG plants being built (have to look up the exact number). They are useless if you can't process the gas (natural gas contains a lot more than methane) and then transport the gas to the LNG plants.

Once the pipelines and processing facilities are built, the gas will make it to market. I expect it will be shipped out as LNG and later (assuming oil prices rise) as light oils, methanol, and naphtha. The gas comes up with the oil, so you get gas whether or not you actually want gas.

Same here. That's why I was so ticked off at the politicization of keystone. Alaska needs Canada's cooperation to get our gas to market, at least it would make it a lot more economical.

There are so many backwards things caused by over-regulation and resistance to pipelines. The government requires that oil companies produce within a certain time frame to keep their lease. Partly because of the resistance to new pipelines, gas rich fields are forced to pipe their gas to a different part of the field where it's re-injected or flared, in order to meet their obligation to "produce". All of our north slope gas is re-injected or flared, none makes it to market. Meanwhile in other parts of the state, gas shortages have led to heating bills that are almost as much as a mortgage payment. To be fair, global economics play a role and low prices are the primary driver, but when the prices go up other factors like permitting become the driver.

I agree, I don't understand people's pipeline paranoia. They think that, if there is no pipeline there must be no fuel shipments.

if there is no pipeline it means the material is just shipped via rail, in quebec style fireballs and derailments that poison surface water sources.

I heard that a blizzard is blowing through the pipeline protest camp and the gvmnt "invaded" the camp, without resistance for some reason, to offer shelter to the protestors so they wouldn't die. Haha I actually spent the last 20 minutes googling drill bits to see if I could find one with real diamonds but I don't think they exist. Wasn't trying to be a smart ass I was genuinely curious. I was on a well site once and a safety guy lost his mind at The tool push one day and picked up a used up drill bit that was sitting by a shack and tossed it through the guys windshield and promptly fucked off, we were examining the bit afterwards and noticed all the diamonds had been eroded off during drilling. Point of the story was that the company man came up and was trying to see if there were any diamonds to scavenge to see if he could pay for a new window. Haha they're all fake though so wouldn't have mattered!

Ha, yeah when I was a kid I asked my dad what Diamant Boart was and he said it was the Swedish company that sold them drilling bits. I heard 'Diamond' so I inspected the shit out of the hundreds of drilling bits he had in the shop. I thought I was rich, almost as rich as I was when I found out that he had access to infinite amounts of 'steelies' the all steel marbles that kids would fight over every day in the playground.

Turns out both are worthless. But a diamond is still a diamond, some are just worth more than others and some are made in a factory. Fuck anything under 5 karats though, there are underground vaults with endless quality diamonds under 5 karats that are kept there to keep prices high.

If the link I posted is true then it's pretty ridiculous our society has a pearl clutching mentality of "Save the environment think of the children!" and "Those poor oppressed Indians!". Oil is the blood of our economy for decades (like you said) and it's indefensible that we can't build a pipeline here for jobs but allegedly are cool with getting one built in foreign lands.

Regardless if my link is true oil and blood diamonds do have a commonality of being mired in conflict. Both definitely have powers that want to control their supply to control prices. I'm also well aware that the asshats in the media aren't telling the whole truth about the Dakota protests. My theory is certain higher powers (Warren Buffett, Saudi Arabia?) don't want the Dakota pipeline being built and are using the media as a proxy to get their agenda pushed.

This man Dave Tucaro, a relative of the same tribe as my grandmother, is the worlds richest Indian. His entourage alone is worth more than the Standing Rock. Why?
