Parachutes add weight to the plane, and they will most likely never be used....so airlines have no incentive to provide them as it cuts into their profits.

Most airlines have actually removed the floating device in case the place crashes into a lake or ocean....because they wanted to save a few dollars in fuel.

I ran across a youtube video that discussed this issue. Apparently, the problem with using a parachute is that one really needs some training in order to be able to do a successful jump. This includes a few times with an instructor to take part in practice jumps, before a person is really up for a solo jump, so having parachutes is viewed as a waste of weight and resources, since someone putting on one from a crashing plane, would probably not be able to make a successful jump anyways.


However, along those same lines of thinking, I also recent came across a small personal jet that does have an emergency parachute for the entire plane.

A story about the company in Barron's cited to about 135 incidents with the airframe parachute allowed the incident to end with everyone surviving. (i.e No one ended up getting killed.)
