I'm a big fan of the martial arts and always have been, but since it went mainstream, I've noticed a lot more martial artists now have inflated egos and seem to carry a bit of a chip on their shoulder. Hand-to-hand combat skills used to be treated with a good deal of responsibility, and one of the benefits of training was that you became a more humble, disciplined person. Now you've got people who just do it because it's a cool thing to do and they want to be toughguys.

On top of that, many MMA fighters fantasize about proving themselves in a "real fight," as it's commonly discussed that a streetfight is the only real place to prove yourself - never mind that most street fights will be against untrained, drunken douchebags...Even the guys who have never been in a streetfight in their life are suddenly looking for a good reason to bring it to the next level.

One only needs to look at how bouncers in the U.S. - usually guys deep in the MMA world - routinely intimidate, victimize, and even assault their customers to see how this groupthink gets out of hand.

There are still many who walk the old-school path of being humble about their skills. And in training environments people act right because the presence of all the other fighters keeps them in check. But more and more MMA guys exhibit bullyish behavior, especially when out drinking with their friends or in alcohol-charged environments.

I know this is weird, and I generally don't get into fights. And normally places I frequent people tend to be more in control of themselves.

But when I bump into dudes, and they seem a bit assholish, the first thing I try to check is for cauliflower ears. From what I have been told, you get that from grappling and fighting a lot. Maybe that is wrong, but I check for it lol.

Anyone ever seen "Knuckle" good documentary, granted it is not about bar fights but Irish traditions and fighting.

I remember in Mongolia I was walking down the street in a rough neighborhood, eating ice cream and talking on the phone in English. About 10 beggar boys started following me and surrounded me. I turned around, hung up the phone and started screaming full-voice at them- "Get the F-CK away from me". They dispersed.

Break standard protoccol of how normal people operate and use your body tone and vocal tone to make people think twice about attempting something silly on you.

I have seen "Knuckles" (its great!) and many bare-knuckle fights on youtube... As I suggested to another guy in another fighting-thread in here I wish more people fought like real men like these do. No bottles and shit, and you don`t go stomping a guy that goes down... It`s agression in a controlled enviroment.

I actually got into my first fight in years a few weeks back while out at the bar.

I was drying my hands after pissing and thought I overheard a guy saying "fucking faggot". I looked over and there was a guy pissing, staring straight ahead (not at me). I took my time and waited for him and asked "did you just call me a faggot?" He kinda thought for a second as was like "yeah, sure did." I looked him in the eye and said "oh yeah?" and shoved him pretty hard...but apparently it was harder than I thought. He fell back against the sink and fell backwards on his ass. Guy was the worst fighter ever because he gets up and just stands there for an instant. I take the opportunity to shove him again into the hand dryer which unbalances him, but he doesn't fall over this time.

At this point, I start playing Toro with him as he just rushes me. I sidestep a couple of times and keep smacking him in the face as he flails. The door guy sees this, rushes over, and throws the guy out (which I kinda felt bad for since I initiated contact). I went back to the other side of the bar where my friend was and continued drinking my beer.

I know it was stupid to get caught up in something as trivial as being called a fag, but I guess the testosterone was just pumping that night. In recent times, I try to avoid physical escalation after having a bottle broken over my head a few years back (broken frontal sinus bone and broken orbital, little piece of titanium in the noggin now, lucky to have not lost any vision although I don't have feeling on some spots of my head). Having your ass handed to you makes you approach confrontations differently, but also, to me, makes me MUCH more aware of my surroundings, constantly checking people out, looking for antsy or aggressive types.

Some of these posts make me thankful I have not been in one in a while.

I very much appreciate all the sharing, but if the people who have actually sustained injuries (lasting or temporary) and just made a thread about it, might let some other people who think fighting would be awesome to reconsider. Titanium in the noggin? Ouch. Thanks for sharing.

It's probably been over 3 years since I was in a fight. I used to fight pretty often but now I avoid it like the plague. It's just not worth it.

About 6 months ago my friends dad was playing pool with some random guy. My friends dad won and the dude got all pissed and punched him in the head. Her dads been in a coma ever since. If he ends up passing away, the dude is looking at a murder charge. Do you think it was worth it? Over a game of pool?

I love to box and fight in the ring, but in my experience, 99% of the time it isn't worth fighting in the street. The combination of getting injured, sued, or arrested is just too much of a burden to bear.

And I agree with what G said earlier, fights definitely used to be more common.

Nowadays people are either too soft or scared of getting arrested to fight, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I've had many, many fights in my lifetime, both in the boxing/kickboxing ring and out. I'm 50 now and haven't had one in about 5 years. Hopefully it's the last time because at this point in my life, if I have to fight there's going to be a damn good reason and I'm pretty sure I'll end up killing someone.

Here in Thailand I've had a few fights on the street. At the time I was going out every weekend to let some steam off. I ran into a drunken Danish guy who began talking shit to me. The first time I saw him, I let it go. The second time I saw him was in Nana disco. I told him to meet me out in the front of the hotel. He brought out five of his friends. I told him, "man to man, one on one." They had other ideas and circled me. Some of the whores working in the disco followed us out. When they saw it wasn't going to be a fair fight, they stood up for me and told the guy, "only one." A couple of the girls had beer bottles in their hands and were willing to use them. After they joined in and made it a little more even, he didn't want to fight.

A couple of weeks later I went to Thermae and there he was, again. Seemed like he followed me everywhere. I ignored him. I'm walking around, doing my thing, and somehow he ended up right in front of me. Of course, he was drunk and talking shit. Earlier in the day I told a friend here in Bangkok of this guy and how he'd been prodding me. My buddy expressed some shock that I had yet to do anything. Anyway, I was in a bit of a foul mood and didn't want to put up with his shit so I politely told him to "get the fuck out of my face." He got closer to me to where he was almost nose to nose with me. He's talking and finally, a little of his spit gets on my. That was the last straw and it set me off. I cracked him under the jaw with a straight left, straight right and knocked him backwards into a little makeshift bar. As he was falling backwards, I threw a left hook that missed and as he was regaining his bearings I hit him with another straight right. Down on the floor he went, almost immediately in front of the entrance. I kicked him a few times and then made for the door. As I was passing through the door I was grabbed by my belt...it was security, he was an off-duty cop.

The guy was out cold so the cop wakes him up and puts both of us in his truck. He's not looking at me, I'm not looking at him. Down to Lumpini Police Station we go. This guy is swearing and pissed off at me and wants to file charges. I didn't have a mark on me so I'm the one who looks guilty. The Thais didn't like his aggressive, drunken, angry, shit talking demeanor and told me not to worry.

Nobody at Thermae wanted to say anything on the record. We're then taken down to Rajdamnern where the tourist police station is. I have to call my wife...not pleasant. She comes down to the station. "Have you seen this guy in the light?" she asks. She's in tears. "What did you do to this guy!" She's pissed and scared.

Turns out one of the punches had given him a black eye and some of the blood vessels burst in his eyes so his eye looked like it was full of blood. His lip was swollen and split and I knocked one of his teeth out. He kept saying, "This is not for talking," as he pointed to his missing tooth. I was like fuck him, he got what was coming to him.

He gets a lawyer and his lawyer starts talking shit. It's like 10AM and I've been at the station for 9-10 hours. I'm irritable, tired, pissed off...The guy's lawyer and the police are saying if I pay him 40K baht the matter will be dropped. I'm sitting in a room full of cops and tell them, "Fuck that, he started it and I finished it." A couple of the cops gasp when I say fuck that. They throw me back in the holding cell with a few Nigerians. They're trying to make deals with me, asking me to contact them on the outside...I just want some good sleep. My wife gets a lawyer...the lawyer tells them I'm not giving them any money and we'll see them in court. I had to wait until the next day before I was released on bail - 30,000 baht ($1000). They held that money for a fucking year and every month I had to go and sign in at the court to show I was still in Thailand.

Finally I went to court. I brought a witness to testify on my behalf. He was asked what sort of character I had. He said I was a mellow guy who never went looking for trouble and that I had told him about this Danish cunt. He then said that he knew me and the only way I would unload on the guy was if he started something and I felt threatened.
The judge admonished the police for even bringing the case to his courtroom. The Danish guy didn't show - case dismissed. I had to pay 2000 baht for court costs and was given probation for 1 year. If I got into a fight within this time I would go to jail.

The very next weekend while at the Beer Garden an Italian guy started harassing and threatening the cashier. Apparently he said he gave her 1000 baht and she said 500. This chick wasn't the sort to steal. They told him to come back at closing time when they figured out the till. There was only one Thai guy working there at the time, a skinny little old guy and he just stood there. I tried reasoning with this Italian and telling him that things would be okay and that it wasn't worth getting riled up about. He told me to fuck off. I told him they were going to call the police and that he was going to go to jail or leave with nothing...he shoves me. So I knocked him the fuck out. He's laid out, his girlfriend is telling me she's sorry, and the guy wakes up. He wants another go at me and picks up a beer bottle...I tell his girlfriend in Thai that if he came at me again I was going to drag his ass out in the street and leave him there with the bottle sticking out of his ass. That was the end of the problem...she drags him away and from then on I was called Somluck Kamsing at the Beer Garden. I hi-tailed it out of there. The wife had already told me that if I got thrown in the can again she wasn't helping...and I didn't want to go to Bang Kwang for that shit.

If you really want to fight, getting into somekind of fighting sport would be the right thing. If it´s a proper club they will teach you how to respect people, your body and the fact that none of us are immortal...hell you even get some real friends to.

Alright, drop some criticism on me. For all the posts I have made about walking away, I couldn't do it today. I was trying to ship a document but forgot to make a copy (so I had the form all done etc). Of course, go make the copies and all these people show up. Fortunately, they have 2 people operating the counter.

The guy before me goes to the gal on the right (he was next - though technically I was there a lot earlier - relevant point for later).

The guy in front of the other gal leaves, I give her time to finish up, I hate being rude and just running up to someone. But the energy of the guy in question annoyed me, when he put his bag down on the counter (at this point he has taken up all the space), I said, "Mind moving your bag?" He goes nuts saying I was here first, I say something like I have been here for a while. At this point the gal helping him is still wrapping up something. So then he says to my gal hey can you help me I am sort of in a hurry and I was here first. He makes a bit of a deal about it, and I activate my compassion and I say, "look if it is that urgent, go ahead." He has like 3 packages - I have one letter. He was so emotionally wound up I thought everyone needs a break. I try to understand that I have no idea what is going on with someone when they outwardly demonstrate chaos - same thing with crazy drivers - maybe they are trying to get to the hospital, wouldn't I want someone to be understanding if I was in a hurry for a serious reason.

But then he takes his stuff and goes to slap fragile stickers on them so technically he wasn't even done. That sort of annoyed me. He made a big fucking deal and then he wasn't ready/

So when I finish, I walked up to him and I calmly said "technically I was prepared before you were. And I was here before you."

At this point, he spazzes like a girl just saying, "go away. you just go away." I thought about making a bigger deal, but I walked off, knowing that I had put him into a bit more of a frenzy. But my adrenaline was pumping. I blame RVF lol. I have been lifting so much lately, I think my testosterone is up. I was prepared to drop my stuff in a dramatic fashion and say something back. But I didn't.

He was my size but I felt like I could take him.

I was stupid, but I was just so fucking annoyed with his mannerisms. He was on automatic, he seemed like the sort of person you could push buttons on all day to get a rise. And I don't judge by race, gender (well sort of), language or sexual preference. I judge by behavior under the belief that people can control their behavior. I was judging and hating his fucking prima donna behavior. And it didn't help that he created chaos and that he wasn't ready - he was slapping stickers on his boxes (he moved them away from the front counter).

In my world, I failed to control my emotions. And, I violated a belief of mine which is leave everyone the same or better when I interact with someone. But his bitchy feminist energy just annoyed the fuck out of me, I just don't know how some guys can put up with that energy. I just wanted to beat him to make him stfu. I definitely messed with his day-I don't think I am proud of that - but I am also, like you were a fucking bitch - so fuck you dude.

Anyway, it just shows me I have much to work on in my life. Just felt like sharing, especially since in an earlier thread I spoke about control, etc. I also feel a bit drained physically - this is the closest to a fight in a long time. He might not have wanted it - but I was gearing up for it.

growing up in the late 80's, early 90's in the mid west, everyone fought, everyone weekend. you would literally drive around with your friends, and cruise around town, end up at the Pizza Hut, and someone was fighting. Or at the drive in, people got jump, huge fights, street fights, fighting was a constant. That all changed when gangster rap hit. No one wanted to fight anymore..

I avoid it all costs. Last real fight was maybe 1995. I beat down and chased away a guy who wanted to stab me. I was 20. I avoided it all costs because I have seen and known many folks who have been locked up for years for simple stupid fucking fist fights. My ego is not worth it, unless, you are in my face. Have never trained in martial arts, but I want to try krav maga.

Narrowly avoid a 20 on 1 beating the other night.

Was in a club with some friends (Mainly Chinese and Vietnamese), was chatting and some guy shoulder barges me from behind. I grab his shoulder and shout "what the fuck". He turns around and pushes me hard enough for me to almost lose my balance (I was pretty smashed). I go to square up and get pulled back across the club by my Jamaican friend. The guy leaves, we settle down for a drink.

Next thing I know the manager of the club is running over and bundling us out the back door. The guy had turned up with a big posse of people and was shouting about "killing the foreigner" and whatnot.

I'm pretty pissed off my myself for reacting, done a good job of ignoring angry Chinese dudes for the year (I currently live in a pretty small city that is fairly isolated with a very small foreign population), but a sexually frustrated guy with an attitude problem finally got the better of me. -1 for me.

As a side note, most of the Chinese here are cool, its a minority with the attitude.

Questions for the guys here.
1) If you have gotten in a fight before - how long did it last for?
2) Your opponent demonstrate any skill/training?
3) Do you have any training?
4) Any thoughts on how long an average guy can go full exertion before becoming exhausted?

If you won great, rather have you guys win than lose. But I am just trying to figure out how soon guys get exhausted from fighting if they have not trained. Or how quickly they end. It doesn't seem like the movies where they fight for 15 minutes and break through walls and shit throwing each other around.

I don't want to get into a fight, but have been thinking of learning how to box. To really throw a punch if I had to. There is a lot that goes into creating the most power in a punch beyond bench press skills, so I think it might be a good thing to learn.

Got in a fight in a movie theater out of all places, not too long ago. I backed a friend up against some guy giving him trouble. Guy was out with some friends and girls and tried to look tough by picking on my friend. I sucker punched the guy, because he sure wasn't expecting it from me. The guy fell to the floor, and we hauled ass out of there. It could have been really bad, since his whole "crew" was there.

I don't like to fight but I'll stand my ground if push comes to shove.

1) 99% of fights I've been in/seen are over in under 1 minute. I'd say 75% over in 20 seconds. Very fast. Endurance is almost never a factor in street fights.

2) 90% of fights are dudes just swinging wildly with no skill or trainining.

3) I have done a fair bit of Boxing & MMA but am far from pro level.

4) Like I said, endurance is rarely a factor in street fights since they end so quickly. Even an untrained guy will be able to go hard for at least a minute with an adrenaline dump if he isn't knocked down/out. The main value of training in a street fight is not endurance, it's the muscle memory and the comfort of being "in a fight" where you can react quickly and naturally.

In short, yes it's worth learning to box. And bench press strength means nothing in a fight in itself, but having more muscle mass in general is always good for short burst fights. Of course it's better to avoid street fights entirely because they are fucking stupid. But always good to know how to defend yourself.

Now that kids are growing up on UFC (and world star ) I think this will change, dudes will be more likely do stuff they saw work a lot on videos like 1-1-2 to a double leg then ground and pound from top or try to take the back for a rear naked choke. 4) I've seen new guys go through hitting drills in Krav. They generally last 15 to 20 seconds before getting winded.

Boxing is great, but toughen up your knuckles by punching trees or brick walls. I can hit either one at almost full force without feeling anything. I've seen more than one guy landing a punch on someone's forehead and breaking their wrist.
