I know secession is unconstitutional, but that didn’t stop Jefferson Davis. What is Trump going to do to the 6th largest economy on the planet? Invade? Resistance (#Resist) is not futile. It is the essence of the American experiment, dissent on behalf of efforts to create a more perfect union. It’s just that the effort required to create that union is simply too difficult with 120 million apathetic non-voting citizens and 60 million who’ve been trying to kill the federal government for the past forty years and have now finally succeeded. We don’t need to play that game. We don’t need to maintain efforts at political persuasion in an anti-political world where fascism is ascendant. President Clinton said we needed to vote for Hillary because our children and grandchildren would thank us. It wasn’t enough. Now we have to separate and end this marriage which was arranged and forced from the beginning, and has never, except when the outside world intruded and threatened destruction, shown any real cohesion. Let’s call an end to the 50 state experiment so we can salvage the ideals upon which the original constitutional republic was based. Separation will let us do a better job at it. This would be funny as hell to watch. In a secession, the red states would be free to pursue the low-regulatory environments that Republicans have always said themselves to favour. Their productivity would skyrocket without the albatross of massive welfare programs to support. California might have the 6th biggest economy in the world, but it also has one of the smallest populations on Earth, essentially the size of Poland or the Sudan. It also has no navy, no allies, and virtually none of the military (the US military being predominantly southerner in composition these days.)

In a real civil war, California's status as the 6th biggest economy in the world would last roughly two weeks. After which its infrastructure and "wealth-building" assets are bombed into oblivion. After that they're down to roaches, rats, and each other for food, since I doubt somewhat that the Midwest is going to hand over corn, flour, or indeed any significant food crop to a bunch of weedy rebels in California.

To be fair, they've likely been watching the US pussyfoot around in Iraq and Afghanistan against ISIS and conclude that a few suicide bombings are enough to make a government give in to secessionists. The US conventional war machine hasn't been fully let off its chain for a very, very long time.

Just imagine, for a moment, the full might of a big portion of the US armed forces unleashed against an urban target it doesn't need to take intact. You don't even have to use nukes. When liberals talk up CA's economy they also fail to mention that most of that wealth is concentrated in the hands of a very tiny elite minority of people. If you isolated CA's economic data from the rest of the nation and measured the Gini coefficient it is by far one of the worst states.

Liberals tend to use various dishonest ways to mask that by leaving out illegals or other temporary migrants and only account for people they define as residents in gdp data.

Also a lot of the profits from those Silicon Valley companies is funneled overseas into various holding funds never to be seen again by the U.S. economy. CA is a wealth transfer state all right..a lot of Silicon valley is subsidized by the U.S. govt in various ways to begin with. Subsidized risk/privatized profit.

(1) Interesting that Rather destroys the argument that Trump was unqualified because he has no prior public service. Good old Dan is proclaiming here that there's basically no training for being President at all.

(2) Note the Inspector Louis about the "LIES! LIES!" Trump has supposedly told. I didn't notice any similar histrionic pearl-clutching over Obama's flat out lies when it came to any aspect of Obamacare.

(3) It's hilarious that Rather pounds the table saying you can't be petty as President. I draw your attention to a certain Presidential candidate who actually made public speeches including rants against a cartoon frog and called anyone who reposted said frog deplorable. (4) Rather actually proclaims that Trump should be getting an understudy to do his tweets for him. It also underscores Rather and the MSM's real fear: that Trump has found an effective and simple way to go right around them to get words out to the people.

Let me expand very shortly on this last point, because it's worth underscoring. Few years ago, I read something by John T. Reed that changed how I thought of the Internet, drained all of my craving to be published by a big publishing house. It was this: The Internet kills middlemen.

This is the prime reason retail has gone into the toilet. A retail outlet is essentially a gatekeeper between the producer of a good and its ultimate consumer. The retail outlet survives only on its ability to skim a slice off the top of that transaction. If the producer can communicate and negotiate directly and effectively with the consumer, there is no need for the middleman at all, and the middleman is fucked.

(This is also why long term investors should probably be avoiding Amazon. It's a contradiction in terms: an Internet middleman. Eventually, someone is going to come up with a faster and more direct way for people to search and liaise directly with producers of goods, and when they do, Amazon is done.)

Trump's tweeting and youtube videos are similarly killing middlemen - but this time the middlemen are the opinionistas of the MSM, who don't have a chance to edit, filter, or twist what he says.

Yes, it's become quite clear to me that progressives have absolutely no intellectual honesty. They will do anything to win, and anything our side is doing is bad and wrong (if it's effective) even if it's the same thing they were doing last week. There are endless examples from the last 16 years.

They cannot be reasoned with because there is no consistent frame of reference to work in. They don't reason their way into anything. They start from their feels-based end position and backfill their rationalizations into a sort of flimsy pseudo-rational argument that will only stand up to people who don't wish to challenge it to begin with.

I remember watching Escape from LA as a kid and thinking how awful it would be for such a place to suffer that fate. The adult me believes it would be an improvement.
