Roberto, here is a vid of him walking around when it was upside down. I think it would take some time for one person to cut, fit and weld the whole thing. I think that time included welding and grinding the thing.

Looks like he had dozens of helpers. Also looks like hippy dippy shit- permaculture, sewing and even dumpster diving for food.

I'm going to speculate he had only the occasional bit of useful help from a volunteer who actually had real skills. There's a couple of things I can see straight away from the photos- people grinding with just a face mask and vest on- ally sparks will find their way straight under that mask and into the eyes. The use of a normal grinding disc rather than an ally specific sanding disc to finish welds. And to cap it off, clamping a drill bit to the tool turret of the lathe rather than using the tailstock.

I don't rate their chances of not sinking personally.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned (i didn't see it and i couldn't find "caption" or "subtitle" when i searched), but if you turn on subtitles for the videos he has short explanations of what he's doing as well.

Not full blown instructions, but definitely non-intrusive play-by-play for anybody who prefers that.

Only thing that I have small remark regarding this channel is that he should make proper bow and atlatl for hunting. I know he is trying to show how to make bow fast, but bow from green wood is not good choice. Atlatl is because of that much better choice as wood is not doing any physical work and just works as a lever.

Edit: he actually made atlatl but I didn't notice it at first. As I said I would rather use that instead of green wood bow.

Dude was a skilled mechanic and carpenter before he embarked on this.

Great video, thanks for posting it. Harkens back to a simpler (and better time). I don't know if that is actually Dick Proenneke narrating that video, but if it is, he's a skilled talker for being a carpenter.

I'd like to revive this thread to remind those who hadn't seen it and post some of his new videos. As MasterBacja suggested above, try out the closed captioning, it gives succinct commentary of what's going on. He also has seemed to have bought new land, so maybe he's setting up for newer, cooler stuff.

His blog, linked in his profile, has even more indepth details of his projects.

He's also recently moved to a new area in the forest and started over. The new area was chosen for better materials: sticks, rocks, clay etc. as well as a stronger, permanant stream for his water powered machines.
