Not trying to scare you here, but Sleep Apnea is also a potential cause. you might get better quality sleep for the first few hours of sleep and then begin having Sleep Apnea issues and not even realizing it, which would cause you to feel like shit. Read up on the symptoms and see if it fits how you feel, if it does, go see a doctor.

I'm glad somebody bothered to actually read what I had written. Yeah, I had a solid night's sleep then. Today I'm short on sleep and much easier to deal with, just groggy. Made some stupid mistakes in some code I was working on. I've been sleeping alone for many years, I'm just not interested in dating grandmothers. I understand the marijuana recommendation, but it is illegal and a lot of the folks I do work for test for it.

Relaxing isn't really an issue. It is the bad attitude I have when I do manage to get a full night's sleep that I'm concerned about.

Garbage in garbage out, its important to put in positive messages and commands to counter the 'they live' style negative conditioning we are exposed to

Magnesium powder is something that is good before sleep, to relax the muscles, and a think and grow rich style goal is also good to direct your subconscious mind while you are sleeping. I also take Vit D and C and fish oil which has benefits as well, and i like to have a teaspoon of healthy oil like pine or olive oil before sleep to lubricate the throat and avoid snoring, and feed the brain/muscles healthy fats

Ive had a lot of benefit from writing out my thinking on paper, and the saying goes something like "It doesnt exist if its not on paper", and it just helps me clarify my thinking and direction to a great extent, otherwise life can just seem like a broken record where you are auto-pilot and don't feel like you are in control. Writing out your thoughts and inner world helps you get clarity on dealing with challenges and creating solutions, and especially formulating powerful strategies

Chicane, just read through the thread. FYI, there have been other good threads on what is sometimes called "sleep hygiene" (hint: search function). One thing is that you might try is the Sleep Cycle alarm clock. I used it for a year, with a log of vitals, recorded my sleep sounds with a digital recorder, read the chapter on sleep hygiene in 4 hour body, and blacked out ALL light in the room and used f.lux on my computer. FYI, I'm 47 and still working on my sleep hygiene. I think mine is largely caffeine related.

I also started using a light box from reading TLoZ's thread.

I am still having some issues but this has helped a lot:

It's an interesting point you raised. I also have at times slept plenty but felt grumpy because of it. Not sure why. I've also many times woken in a bad mood due to something pissing me off in my dreams which then carried on into waking life. They could be related. Perhaps during the 'better' nights' sleep you are waking in the morning during an REM or dream cycle. As this is closer to the sleep/wake boundary your mood from your dream could more easily carry over into your waking state. Do you remember your dreams in any of these cases?

Sometimes, but since the majority of my dreams are nightmares, I would rather forget them. I don't use an alarm clock, so I typically wake up at an appropriate part of my sleep cycle.

I think most people have majority nightmares or at least negatively charged dreams. That's because the brain uses dreams to downplay events with a strong negative emotion attached from the day or days before. You obviously just remember yours more than most. Try to detach the emotion or mood which lingers from your dream when you wake. Maybe a cold shower or meditation on waking would do it.

One of the most extraordinary things I've done recently, that has revolutionised my life, is simply to establish a consistent sleep pattern:

- I am in bed by 11pm every night, and my alarm goes at 6 every morning.
- For me, 7 hours is an optimal sleep time. Any longer and I always wake up, go back to sleep, then have to wake to an alarm. After which I find I'm tired. I work pretty well on 6 hours too - better than 8, but 7 is the real sweet spot where I wake up feeling really fresh.
- My alarm is chirping birds, and the noise level is incremental. Not waking up abruptly was a big part of making this routine a success.

It seems like such an innocuous thing, but really committing to it has made an astonishing difference. The most marked difference has been to my libido. It's quite astonishing, but simply regularising my sleep has turned my previously quite manageable libido into something almost problematic. I'm quite serious when I say that I am almost a different person. Getting up as it starts to get light seems to have done wonders for my system. I am *much* less idle during the day, which has always been a particular vice for me. It's also made it much easier to get out of bed in the morning. I am much livelier waking up at 6 than I am at 8.

I think there have been all sorts of fringe benefits too, weird stuff like my nails and hair growing much more quickly, that sort of stuff. It may be nonsense of course, I have no real way of knowing, but this is the impression I have.

Firstly, I recommend seeing a sleep psychologist. But if you see a good one, he'll likely tell you these things:

- jog every night 3 hours before your projected time of sleep
- NO MORE naps during the day (for programming purposes)
- take 6.25 of constant-release Ambien every night for 6 weeks

One you do these things, you'll re-program your brain to sleep deeply during the night. Also, it goes without saying, but don't masturbate during the day - only just before sleep, because it literally releases sleep hormones. Finally, there is 1 medication pill that started with a "Z" that was very effective and no side effects, look it up, it's good for people that wake in middle of night..
