For the first time in history, a child was born by using the DNA of three separate individuals. The procedure took place in Mexico. Here’s an overview:

The child was at risk of inheriting a severe neurological disorder called Leigh syndrome, which typically kills individuals within a few years of birth...In using DNA from three individuals, researchers were able to remove some of the mother’s DNA from an egg and leave out the disease-causing DNA. The healthy DNA was slipped into a donor’s egg, which was then fertilized. Thus, the child inherited DNA from his two parents and the egg donor.



Apparently, this procedure is blocked in the US. The article states that the procedure is “controversial,” but doesn’t explain why. It seems to be a miracle cure (removing diseases before they manifest); however, there must be some bioethical issues involved.

Any thoughts?

I can understand why for the syndrome - but if it ain't broke don't fix it.

This is really weird for me to say since I'm not really a godly person but, they shouldn't be playing god with something that doesn't need modification.

This technology is being used to stop recessive genetic disorders in the mother, passed down through mitochondrial DNA, from being potentially passed down to the offspring, and then later to their offspring.

These disorders can be fatal.

To me this is unbelievably awesome. No one wants stupid, ugly, or defective children. I have so much hope and excitement for what this might mean for my children. I'm going to make an eye watering amount of money, and raise a fucking army of highly intelligent, handsome, charming and healthy male children who are going to troll the shit out of all these Year Zero types, and bang their slutty daughters. I'm excited for the kids of the future, they are going to have a great time - I hope it comes about soon enough that I get to see it.

If you want to see the worst out of this then yes, it is a disaster for ethical biology. For those who don't want to pass on their genetic disorders it is a godsend and the human race could be rid of its genetic flaws.

I just googled the doctors fertility clinic in NYC. It looks like he's making the big bucks.

Its right by central park, and the pictures show a huge salt water fish tank in the waiting room. The website leads you to believe they cater to the Chinese. It keeps trying to translate, and all the employees are Chinese. Don't they try to always have boy babies over there?

Over the past few years, India has become a popular destination for people wanting to have children using surrogate mothers, partly because its doctors and clinics broker the service at relatively low cost.

But many of the women are paid a pittance of the money that is paid to clinics by anxious couples yearning to have a child.

Swaraj cited past cases where a couple took home one child from a twin birth or a couple left a disabled baby with the surrogate. "The law would stop such unethical practices," Swaraj said.
