I am not sure this applies to everyone but as a BLACK MAN I find it makes things easier if you bring your passport with you when trying to enter venues. I had my passport checked a few times by bouncers. At "Le Network" they were turning people away and the guy checked my passport, tried to speak English, made jokes with me and let me inside.

I've never been to France but I can definitely vouch for this statement. Like you, I'm also from New York, so sometimes bouncers get giddy when they see the "New York, USA" line on my passport.

I usually try to enter with my DL first, which has my old address from Las Vegas on it.. people (foreigners and Americans) always ask "do you REALLY live in Las Vegas?!" It can be a cool conversation starter, because people always state their assumptions on those that live in Vegas (big gamblers, rich, expensive city to live in.. none of this is true for the most part).

Make sure to look somewhat like your passport photo though. I haven't cut my hair since March 2016, and my passport photo is from my military days.. so you can see the problem with that lol.
