I have great appreciation for techno but share these sentiments.

And although dubstep sometimes gets absurd, I was very happy when tuplets started working into electronic music. I think previously there was a technological limitation that sequencers couldn't create irregular beat subdivisions.

I'd never explored Techno until one of my favorite artist's introduced me to the sound in a different way to what I was used to hearing.

I listened to the first track, very generic set, it could have been any club in Europe between 1993 and 2014.

As an older member of this forum, I'm expected to say "oh the music was so much better back then", but in fact when it comes to this genre, I'll say the music was exactly the same back then, and that's weird...

There is a lot of recycling going on, and like I said, at least 90% of it is very generic to downright mediocre. You have a conveyor belt of older teens who get exposed to the genre and latch on to it. Part of it is that the rest of pop music has gotten progressively worse, while techno hasn't changed.

I was first exposed to techno in 1992 when I took a summer off from college in Tenerife. Rave culture was already thriving in California, but it was ahead in Europe. I was totally blown away then, it was like the coolest people from the UK and Europe had all congregated there, like monarch butterflies flyng down to gather their a small patch of Mexican rainforest. That was just before the time places like Ibiza or Tenerife really blew up.

The women were incredibly beautiful, not just good looking, but great dancers, very stylish and elegant in a casual way. I managed to barely get a tan there all summer because I would go to sleep every day around 6-7am, makeout on the beach or in secluded coves on the way back to the flat, get up late afternoon. Breakfast for dinner, breakfast after sleep at 4pm and late dinner...

The DJs were outstanding at the better venues, each with his own style, take and following (psych/trance, house, italo, D&B,...), high energy sets peaking around 2 to 4am followed by the more chilled out afterhours dawn sets.

Dettman's set is on fire! This is Berlin inspired techno, if you've been to Berlin techno clubs or listen to this style of techno, it hits every point of hard thumping sound taking you to a dark dark place haha. Dettmann is a resident at a notorious club and this is the sound that he brings along with Ben Klock. These guys get booked around the world just to bring that particular sound to a festival or club. When you pay to see these guys you expect this style! I'm seeing him a few months along with Nina Kraviz and I know its gonna be a ridiculous party.

If you listen to each set on Boiler Room, you will realize that they are all techno, but they all sound different. This is the sound that they bring. That's what makes techno fun, a DJ can discover a track from the 90's and fit it into his current set and it flows well with their current sound.

I talked about Nina Kraviz's dj set at Timewarp 2016, if you listen to it, its acid house techno all mixed into one. That's what makes Nina Kraviz good.

Coming from the '86-'93 dance era myself, I have to agree with you here.

I think it's more that techno has / had very strict rules for what does and doesn't get and keep people dancing, so the faceless / generic production line quality of it was a huge part of its appeal, rather than being a negative. Whilst it could be experimental, it could only experiment so far before people couldn't dance to it any more. I always thought it worked best when it took a pop song as far as it could go away from the pop aesthetic, down to what reliably worked: a core vocal hook, a few samples, the build, the soar, the breakdown, and a couple of synth ideas completely run into the ground via repetition, but produced a pleasing mantra effect depending on the drugs involved.

It was Anti-Star, and, in a way, Anti-Song. As such, it's a very consistent style in terms of quality - if you went beyond a certain level of generic you ended up on the pop, not the dance charts and completely-blew your club cool. As such, I don't hear much degradation in terms of quality, the way pop music has currently-devolved. It's function is to let you get fucked up for hours, to dance a weekend away, and to drive on a city freeway at night feeling like you own the city and are living slightly in the future (that sadly never seems to arrive).

The best part: it was very cheap to make and press these records. Everyone knew someone, so, despite my rock bands, every so often I'd be asked to drop some house piano on a friend's track in process, and I got very good at drum programming. You'd get a couple of hot girlfriends in to moan a few catch phrases into a sampler, and you'd have a record. Sometimes the records would sell well, sometimes not, but it didn't matter. If it failed you simply put out your next record under a different name. No-one would notice.

Man, you're bringing back memories. Part of the reason for my huge notch count is I spent most of my weekends from -'88 to '93 dancing from Friday night to Monday Morning. The girls were stylish, particularly as the hippie chick look hit around '89-'90, very fit from dancing, and all fucked up on E, which made them affectionate, sensual, feminine, and want to hang all over you. "Oh, I love you soooo much." I could head out to a rave with my mates and end up banging five different women over the weekend, particularly as my natural excessive energy levels and dislike for E worked in my favour: it makes a large percentage of guys lose interest in having sex, and about 50% of guys couldn't get it up on it.

This meant, I was often the only heterosexual man with a hard cock at a rave.

I always felt one dance culture became Speed-based and the song tempos accelerated, something was lost in the girls. Speed made girls hard and I felt techno was more music for dancing by yourself than with someone else. Coupled with that, I felt like energy and power was lost as the synths and drum machines involved moved from analogue to digital, particularly as some clubs started trying to phase out vinyl.

I loved Acid House. The cheap, almost violent roughness of how the tracks were thrown together always struck me as Dance Punk. It was goofy, campy and fun. It's like you can hear the glue and sticky-tape.









Contrast with the developing 'cold' sound by '91-'92 as Speed took over from E. So, acid, baggy, trance and stadium house all went out the window, and, with it, a lot of personality. Whilst you'd still get the occassional 'goofy' techno hit, such as what is probably the campiest song in existence, (and a favourite of Kurt Cobain's):





...the club sound was more dominated by this kind of emerging 'harshness'.









You know the pre-dawn hours when it feels like the party is dying? That was late '92 - early '93 to me.

God, I remember "I must increase my bust". The most ridiculous song in the world. I probably listened to that thing a billion times.

The late 80s were before my time, but they sound absolutely amazing. So much optimism and fun.

I can never keep track of what's techno, what's D&B, what's EDM, or any of the other 10 billion subgenres, so I'll just leave my favorite song here. This got me through some really bad times.

If anyone wants a laugh, here's an old 4-track cassette demo from - guessing by the House Piano and faux-Stadium Blasts - early 1991. Tape's probably stretched. Completely 'dry' mix. If I'd taken it to the studio, I would have thumped up the drums with reverb and detuning and roped in a few female friends to drop in a few 'hooky' vocal samples here and there.

This is exactly what I mean by Generic Techno. Still, you can see why I always asked to play House Piano on people's songs as I could do it live at the speed you hear it.

Man, that is early 90s as hell.
You can tell that thing never got with 100 miles of a DAW. I haven't heard a song with those minor imperfections in like 20 years.

But it sounds like everybody involved in making it had a great time.
