What are AMV’s or Anime Music Videos?

From Wikipedia --> an anime music video (AMV) typically is a fan-made music video consisting of clips from one or more animation shows or movies set to an audio track, often songs or promotional trailer audio. AMVs are not official music videos released by the musicians, but are rather fan compositions which synchronize edited video clips with an audio track. AMVs are most commonly posted and distributed over the Internet through AnimeMusicVideos.org or YouTube. Anime conventions frequently run AMV contests or AMV exhibitions consisting of blocks of videos.

AMVs should not be confused with music videos that employ original, professionally made animation (such as numerous music videos for songs by Iron Maiden), or with such short music video films (such as Japanese duo Chage and Aska's song "On Your Mark" that was produced by the film company Studio Ghibli). AMVs should also not be confused with fan-made "general animation" videos using non-Japanese animated video sources like western cartoons, or with the practice of vidding in Western media fandom, which evolved convergently and has a distinct history and fan culture. Parallels can be drawn between AMVs and songvids, non-animated fan-made videos using footage from movies, television series, or other sources.

The first anime music video was created in 1982 by 21-year-old Jim Kaposztas. Kaposztas hooked up two VCRs to each other and edited the most violent scenes from Star Blazers to "All You Need Is Love" by The Beatles to produce a humorous effect.

We already have a thread dedicated to mangas which was met with a favorable response, which is why I’ve decided make this one.

I’ve used the search functions and did not find anything similar – if there is a dupe then please delete my thread.

I have been watching AMV’s since the day I’ve discovered Youtube ages ago. Still remember a time when people were throwing around the term ‘Linkinball’ as almost everyone was making AMV’s by combining Dragon Ball Z clips with music from the albums Hybrid Theory and/or Meteora by Linkin Park. Fun times.

I know that some perceive manga/anime as a pastime of beta dweebs and when you look at the state of the medium you cannot really say that the critiques do not have a point going into their favor, but I still believe that there are gems to be found which are worth reading/watching.

That being said, I understand if AMV’s or mangas/animes are not your cup of tea but I will politely make a plea that if you do not like them then you must not watch them. Better than making posts that would serve nobody.

I have always liked when the music matched the theme of the pictures I was watching. The rhythm of the music which elegantly escorts the rhythm of the frames was something that always fascinated me, mesmerized me.

Besides that animes allow choreography that is truly difficult to achieve in real life movies because they are, simply said, impossible for the human body. Though the newer super hero movie fights are also heading into that direction – case in point being the fight between the heroes in Marvels Civil War. Damn, loved the scenes where everybody was duking it out to orchestra music (especially the airport scene).

I use AMV’s for inspiration and motivation. Some are made with such passion that I can feel the hours of bloody sweat and tears the maker had to put in it to achieve such a high quality. I can only say kudos to that.

During the days when I feel down or the world decided to conspire a bit against me I boot up my collection of AMV’s which make my juices flowing again to throw myself into the trenches once more.

An additional bonus to watching AMV’s is that through this way I’ve found a lot of new artists and their music.

I’ll sporadically be adding AMV’s I think you guys would find interesting. Others are also welcomed to post their favorites.

Hey OP I'm with you, good AMVs are a treat.

I had favorited a bunch of them on YouTube. Unfortunately they are subject to a double whammy of copyright claims from either the song producer or the rights holder of the anime itself (sometimes both). The result is that almost all the videos I watched have been removed.

I'm not that much into them anymore since after a while they all kind of appear the same, but I'll occasionally run into a decent one while browsing around the webs.

I also stopped watching anime ages ago. Don't have the time to commit myself to a series. Though I still like to flip through the occasional manga and watch a well made AMV.

Bartender is one of my favorites, awesome music too.

Happy to hear that and I hear you, again. They do seem to follow a certain template but every now and again I come across one which gives me goose bumps. This one for example, I've been following One Piece since my elementary school days and, damn, it is simply good.

Hahaha, now you've made me remember. There was the Linkin Park fad and the Let the bodies hit the floor era. Nowadays a lot of the stuff seems to be synced with orchestra music. Ah well, I'm excited to see what the future will bring.

Hands down one of the most manly animes ever and one of my favs, great song too, no SJW feminist crap, all the main characters are so masculine, you can literally learn game and masculinity concepts from them. Even the main character is the most non-thirsty alpha around women I ever seen portrayed on TV.

I am also fond of these. Three of my favorites:

1. Future Gohan and Trunks AMV - Breaking Benjamin (So Cold)

This may be the single best DBZ AMV I've ever seen. Great timing, great sync, epic music and footage choice. Most DBV AMV's are cookie cutter, but there have been some classics developed around the History of Trunks arc, which is probably the darkest arc in all of DBZ. Future Gohan is my favorite character in all of Dragonball (probably in all of anime barring maybe King Bradley), and what happens to him in this arc and his relationship with Trunks is really emotionally charged to me. This video is also how I discovered Breaking Benjamin.





2. Future Gohan and Trunks AMV - Nickleback (Saving Me)

Close to #1 for me, this one is even more focused on Gohan. Reminds me of a son calling out for his father in the midst of a tragedy he has to face alone and, ultimately, proving unable to survive it. The last few seconds still get me to this day. Awesome tribute to an EXTREMELY underrated, tragic, and almost criminally under-used character.





3. Moving away from DBZ, here's an Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood video focusing on King Bradley - the lonely "puppet on a string". He's the antagonist for the whole series, but the way this AMV is put together you almost start to feel for him - given his story, who really would want to be king?
The editing in this one really is top notch - incredible timing and great choice of footage. The songs lyrics also fit perfectly with the character's story arc and struggle. Doesn't really get better than this.

I can't believe this thread happened and yeah I haven't seen one since Fort Minor(technically Linkin Park) was still a thing and everyone was blasting Remember the Name. All the Remember the Name AMVs of Bleach good times, but like now it's never a smart thing to actively talk about watching anime.

I only heard good things about Jojo. Checked the manga but it seems quite long. I’ll probably read the thing though because the intro seems really interesting. Thanks for the heads up. Besides that it seems that the song Pretender was made for good AMV’s.

Wow, awesome choices of AMV’s Excelsior. Your descriptions add a personal note which makes watching them a special treat. Thank you. I’ve followed Dragonball religiously as a kid until the GT arcs. Then I’ve stopped. My favorite part is the Cell saga.

Full Metal Alchemist is one of the top 5 works that comes out of Japan for me. The author is a goddamned genius how she intertwines humor, tragedy and a sense of an epic story. Reading the thing for the first time was something I wish I would be able to experience again. The scene with the dog and daughter still gets me to this very day. Here is my favorite Full Metal Alchemist AMV.

Hahaha, now you’ve made me remember. Good times, damn good times! But the particular song really meshes well with the themes of many animes directed at teen boys. Training to get stronger and be remembered. But the market did saturate quite quickly. Much like the oversaturation with the ‘Let the Bodies Hit the Floor’ AMV’s.

I never was able to talk about animes or mangas with anyone really neither did I really want to. Films made by Studio Ghibli seem to be on neutral ground though.

I will have to disagree with you about who should make animated music videos though. Many besides them are great, which is why I will keep the discussion open.

Incidentally, this is the video which first introduced me to AMV’s and it’s from 2006. I was still in elementary school back then. Gothic style seems to mesh well with the German language.

This one set the bar in my location when I was but a stub of a man. I'm surprised not to find it here.





Relevant song choice and not-terrible lip syncing. It spawned a thousand try-hard attempts by people far less talented and by the time the first hour of any social gathering was lost on watching shitty AMVs I was well on my way to ditching that omega crowd, so thankyou AMVs. You showed me the exit.

Aside, I fucking hated Evangelion and even in my blue pill days looked down on any fellow males within its fandom. I wasn't exactly locking down pussy nightly back then but even I couldn't stand that cunt-whipped limberdick cocksucker Shinji. He made me want to punch the fucking screen, and several times I got nasty stares at group viewings when I'd shout something to the effect of "JUST FUCK ONE OF THEM FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!"
