Women are 'genetically programmed to have affairs'

'Lifelong monogamy does not characterise the primary mating patterns of humans,' says Dr David Buss from the University of Texas

Women are predisposed by their genetics to have affairs as "back-up plans'" if their relationships fail, according to a research paper.

Scientists at the University of Texas say they are challenging the assumption that humans have evolved to have monogamous relationships.

The team's research has put forward the "mate-switching-hypothesis" which says humans have evolved to keep testing their relationships and looking for better long-term options.

The senior author of the research, Dr David Buss, told the Sunday Times: "Lifelong monogamy does not characterise the primary mating patterns of humans.

"Breaking up with one partner and mating with another may more accurately characterise the common, perhaps the primary, mating strategy of humans."

For our distant ancestors – when disease, poor diet and minimal healthcare meant that few people lived past 30 - looking for a more suitable partner was necessary, researchers assert.

Despite anecdotal claims about cheatng, no study has shown that humans are predisposed to monogamy or non-monogamy.

A study carried out by Rafael Wlodarski and a team of researchers at Oxford University looking into infidelity found a correlation between the length of a individual's ring finger and the likelihood that they would cheat on a partner.

However, they stressed that they could not find a causal link.

Professor Robin Dunbar of Oxford University said the differences were “subtle” and “only visible when we look at large groups of people”.

"Human behaviour is influenced by many factors, such as the environment and life experience, and what happens in the womb might only have a modest effect on something as complex as sexual relationships," he said.

Dr Buss said: "Affairs serve as a form of mate insurance, keeping a back-up mate should a switch become warranted in the future.’

"A regular mate may cheat, defect, die, or decline in mate value.

"Ancestral women lacking a back-up mate would have suffered a lapse in protection, and resources."

From what I know, men are more naturally disposed to seek out multiple partners, but they tend to be easier pleased by the partner (or partners) they're with.

By default women prefer to only be with one partner at a time, but they're harder to keep pleased, so if a husband becomes slothful or loses his manhood after getting married she's more likely to have an affair.

Plus economics and culture will play a big role here too - in older areas where communities were smaller and more close-knit there were fewer potential options, and more social repercussions for infidelity.

In today's world of huge urban populations, Tinder, and hookup culture there are far more "perceived" options out there than before so it naturally makes sense that people are less reluctant to commit.

I've experienced enough in my own life to know a woman is going to be a whole lot more faithful to me than I will be to her. I have never in my life had trouble finding a woman that would be faithful to me and I have probably cheated on every women that I have ever had.

If the majority of women in your life cheat on you, they are not the problem, you are the problem. The sad fact is that you have nothing to offer them worth them keeping you around.

I think it's a little different - when men cheat they usually don't think of it as "infidelity" because men are hardwired by default to seek out multiple partners (I mean since men can impregnate several women at once it is biologically natural, even though culturally frowned upon).

When women cheat on the other hand, it's almost always because they're dissatisfied with the partner they're with.

Though the idea that all women are completely "pure" and only cheat if the man isn't being a man isn't really true either. I'm sure there are plenty of entitled women out there who overestimate their own value, and think they're entitled to date Brad Pitt, so they cheat anytime they think their "status" might be enhanced by doing so.

I'm not talking about "fucking around" - I'm talking about consensual polygamy/polyamory with multiple, stable wives and partners, such as King Solomon's harem in the Bible.

You're reading into things which were never said - it's simply explaining the difference in psychology between men and women, not justifying it.

Basically, even if a man is in love with his HS sweetheart he married 20 years ago, if he sees a hot young bimbo at a nightclub his animal instinct is still going to want to "get busy with her" so he has to constantly be on his guard and use self discipline.

With women however, the instinct to "sleep around" doesn't kick in as much unless she's in some way disgusted with the man she happens to be with, or possibly thinks she might benefit somewhat in "status" for doing so.

I feel like that statistic is also bullshit. Obviously this is purely my opinion from my personal observation, but I find it incredibly hard to believe young adults are somehow having less sex than they have the past couple decades just from where I'm standing. Everything is about hooking up these days.

I disagree. Everything is about hooking up, but how many people regularly hook up with someone? More precisely, how many men regularly do so?

In the past, when our culture was still patriarchal, the norm for male-female relationships was LTR->marriage. In those days, people had regular sex within marriage. Only a minority could enjoy hookups and extramarital affairs.
