I think this devolving into an argument about clothing manufacture and which restaurants were featured in the fall issue of International Cuisine is not the original point of the thread, at least in my interpretation.

Baldrich while I do agree with you on many aspects, at the same time I don't think it's best to go down this road of tit for tat on individual things, I think you have plenty of other valid subjective and objective reasonings without doing so.
It's easy for others to take it as full frontal assault on a place you have tired of, which naturally puts people on the defensive.

I was just responding to their points about "lack of culture" in the US. The whole tit for tat is a waste of time but now you know how it all typically ends in Spain.

Rarely will you see such fanatical responses on other threads except those about Spain. It seems there is some Biblical rule that says "Thou shalt not criticize Spain". Well, the Inquisition is over and Franco is dead is what I tell those fanatics.

Northern Europe =/= Nordics.

Jante's Law is in Scandinavia only.

He throws together UK and Holland in Northern Europe as well (just how Spanish people do), but those countries don't have Jante Law.

North to Spain is what I mean. I didn't say Holland or the UK were Nordic countries.

I was giving people some information about the "bad" side of Spain. The initial discussion was about the cons of Spain if you have an ambitious or "alpha" personality. It's not a good place for players, to sum up.

RE: Thought about Spain after living there for 10 years
It´s pretty clear the OP got rejected by spanish people in general. Who still call him el americano. And instead of making a double effort in integrating. He´s criticizing the country/host with anecdotal stereotypes. Just like a beta makes when he gets rejected by a girl. Bashing her instead of analyzing his own faults. And correcting them.

Some other posters say they´ve lived in SA so it´s probably the same as Spain. Sure thing. If I had lived in India I could surely consider making a parallel with London or even NY...

Spain has many faults. But the pros outhweigh the cons largely. The major con is the aversion to risk. And in this field the US excels. All the other topics are utter nonsense. Not one valid criticism was made of Spain or spanish people. Just ridiculous stereotypes and self-enhancement with continuous assertion of american superiority. When there is no such thing. Americans at this moment have only two thing going for them: entrepreneurship. And if Hillary Clinton wins. This will also disappear. And military power. Which remains the strongest military. Even though at the expenses of their own people.

The topic of food was brought up by the OP anyway. Food is just one of the factors relevant in a country. Woman, weather, economy, etc, etc.

I´ve lived in Spain in 2006. The second day from arriving was invited to the opening party of a political newspaper.

When i was there i wasn't attracted to the girls but one of my friends said they were the friendliest and easiest to make out with but not to fuck. Although he was more into the girls with south american heritage.

Can we stop with this Alpha/Beta bullshit?

And the notion that disliking aspects of a place after 10 years is a failure of effort? It's ridiculous.

Spain has many faults. But the pros outhweigh the cons.

The topic of food was brought up by the OP.

Not at all. Again, as I have already said, how could I have stayed in business for so long if I had been "rejected by Spanish people in general"?

If anything, I have "owned" this place. But that still doesn't cancel out the negatives.

What are the pros in Spain? Enlighten us. I will be the first to mention some of them:

Nice weather -- you can get that in the US and MANY OTHER places.

Relaxed atmosphere.

Bars and cafés everywhere, cheap prices.

Outside Madrid and Barcelona, IF you find a job, cheap rents.

What's your point? SA is VERY culturally similar to Spain, especially Argentina, Uruguay and parts of Mexico and Cuba of course. The mentalities are very similar. That should be obvious, just as New England has many traits in common with England. If you read Albion's Seed, many parallels are drawn.

Spanish culture is VERY STRONG so of course it will spill over into Latin America.

I challenge you to come to Spain, open your own business or find a job. Then you can come and talk to me. You haven't got a clue.

Yep, EXACTLY. VERY easy to make out but nothing further than that. I live in a neighborhood filled with both young Spaniards and expats and all the expats and Spaniards tell me the same: South American heritage women are way friendlier, nicer and just not as bitchy as the Spanish. Even Spanish people from the Canary Islands living here in the peninsula mention how rude people can be and how they much prefer Latin American women or from Scandinavian countries. Most expats here definitely prefer South American women. I go more for Scandinavians but that's a personal taste thing.

RE: Thought about Spain after living there for 10 years
There's a lot of great points made by all parties in this discussion.

I'm not the guy to come to regarding more foregone conclusions about Spanish culture especially with all this info to absorb but will however add this:

Few years back, I met some friendly Spanish professionals that have moved to Dallas for work opportunities. Quite a few of the guys represent a Spanish company that is working on infrastructure projects in the region.
Though chill, many have this herd like mentality of doing the same things every weekend with the same 8-12 rotating Spaniards plus some outside groupies occasionally. Lots of talking about nothing & aloofness. As OP referred to, there is one Catalan guy part of the mix though he's most likely to take a vacation by himself & branch out individually when he can.

(Topic for another time but I found Catalans to be really annoying when I vacationed in Barcelona preferring Madrid more)

Back on subject, one of my Portuguese friends said the same thing about certain Spaniards doing Erasmus in Poland always sitting next to each other while cheating in classes & doing the same aloof stuff every weekend.

There are however cool Spaniards that branch out altogether & make an effort to hang out with people outside of their cliques in Dallas.

What also annoyed me alot in Spain was groups of 3-5 Spaniards shouting disrespectful things in spanish from 20 meters away, for example "rubia puta te voy a culiar" (blonde whore i'm gonna fuck you).

Like what the fuck, if you are a man and wanna fuck her then why don't you just approach the girls instead of hiding behind a language barrier and a group of friends? I can't stand guys acting like that. As soon as confronted they didn't even know how to act. I don't think spanish guys have good game despite what is said on the forums. Never saw any Spaniards actually approaching.

I didn't enjoy the food either to be honest. I'm sure there are good fancy restaurants but that's not where most people go.

I got the impression there was some racism or prejudice against south americans. Anyone can confirm this?

Not trying to be argumentative, just curious. Can you name a few places in the US with nice weather (Mediterranean climate), a relatively decent social scene and nightlife (not just suburbs, highways and big box stores) where you don't have to pay through the nose to live?

I mean, sure, Southern California and Hawaii are great. Miami is also great, though too hot for some people. However, you have to pay a fortune to live in any of those places and have a decent life. It's doable if you have a high paying job, but it seems like without a job or a business that requires being present in the US, it's just not good value for money compared to many other countries including Spain. Also, don't even get me started on health insurance which can easily be 1K+ per month for those who don't get in through employers.

Again, I'm not trying to start an argument here. I choose to live in the US, at least for now, but that's because I have a job here. I am considering Spain as one of retirement destinations, so I'd like to learn from guys who lived there and in the US.

RE: Thought about Spain after living there for 10 years
I had a semi-girlfriend who was from Spain, and she fit a lot of the stereotypes the OP described.

She was overall, not that interesting to talk too. She was very kind, and she liked to fiesta a lot...but too much. She would get mad at my friends if they weren't singing and dancing and all that every time we were out, like she would legitimately be a little pissy.

When ever I tried to have a deeper discussion about anything, she pretty much never had anything to say, just gave a few words that spelled out indifference. One time me and some friends actually got in a debate about politics and social stuff, and she was mad that we were talking about all that shit.

She was very loyal though, and family devoted, pretty much connected to her parents despite them being an ocean away even though she was a grown woman (albeit in early 20s). After a while I thought she was too clingy, which is why I stopped seeing her (she still tried to see me all the time though even after I put her down pretty badly). Not a lot of feminist characteristics, unless having a career makes someone feminist - she was quite traditional for the most part. From the looks of it, she was big into her social circle in Madrid.

She grew up in rural Spain and went to Madrid for Uni/work (which she still hasn't found, just interning still after a couple of years of looking), so I think she does have good perspective from both sides of Spain. The only thing that ever got her fired up was talking about Catalans leaving Spain, in which she said the hell with them - but she never bothered to elaborate, she would just say that "if they want to go, then they should go, they're downers anyway" (paraphrasing). We met in Asia, and she REALLY did not like Asian work culture, it was too serious for her I think.

So she's really the only Spanish woman I've had serious interaction with. The only other two Spanish people who I knew at a decent level were teachers/professors in America, so they were more worldly.

She fit the stereotypical image of a Spanish women quite well, she also had very distinct Spanish features (thick eyebrows, tan skin, dark straight hair). I don't think you could have made a more "Spanish" woman than my ex.

Not really sure what I am trying to say about this, guess that in my very limited experience I agree with some of the stereotypes the OP listed. Wish I had more interactions with Spanish people, but quite frankly, I've never saw Spain as an interesting place to live.

I do have to question OP, why wait a full 10 years before deciding to leave? You have some money, consistent employment and a competitive degree from the United States, you could have left several years ago - why the wait? Teaching English is almost always going to have a cap on someone who is highly financially ambitious, especially working in a mommy state like Spain.

Definitely - they don't have good game AT ALL. I've had even Spanish girls come up to me in a bar and tell me "wow, you're definitely not Spanish" and when I ask them why they say "you seem so indifferent to us!" And they love that. If you speak English, are a bit cocky and just interesting, many girls will dig you. But many of them will also say they hate Spanish guys and that's why they always go out in groups of friends because Spanish guys are just too annoying and "babosos" they are called, which translates roughly as "slimy". Many Spanish guys catcall and shout "guapa guapa!!!" (beautiful). It's fun to watch them.

Spanish, outside their group, can be really cowardly. They only go out in groups and act real "macho" in their group of friends. I once had an annoying group of guys in a bar they just kept annoying me and I had it and emptied my pint over their heads. They were shocked. Spanish don't really confront others who bother them. I don't put up with anyone's bullshit. I loved when they were thrown out of the bar by Romanian security guards too (who were my friends).

Yes, there is DEFINITELY prejudice against South/Latin Americans in general as well as against Moroccans. Spaniards feel very superior in accents to South Americans and hate it if you call them Latin Americans. They hate it because they see Latin Americans as inferior to them, even though Latinos are a product of Spain.

People will make ignorant comments everywhere about all nationalities without a care in the world. The other day I was food shopping and the cashier was OPENLY bashing "Moroccan thieves" in the supermarket. If she did that in the US she'd be fired.

The highlighted part is a good thing. Free speech is a good thing, political correctness is a bad one.

And also not all Spanish are like those pussies you mention. The bloodiest brawl I have seen in my life was in Figueres, broken limbs all around and the bar totally destroyed, and believe I have seen many.

You already named them. There are other cheaper places though -- there are dozens of small cities in California that are not as expensive as LA.

Yeah, Health Insurance is definitely a sad part about America. It's ridiculous and obscene. But in Spain they are slowly privatizing everything and the good times won't last forever.

Spain is definitely a great place to retire -- MUCH CHEAPER than the US, great weather on the Mediterranean coast...almost no rain though and in January you will get highs in the upper 60s and at night lower 40s. It's wonderful in that regard. In the Summer it gets really hot but semi-arid and you can get by with a fan, unlike Miami.

I'd definitely give Spain a go if I were a retiree.

PS: There are also many Florida small towns with similar lifestyle as Spain or parts of South Carolina.

The great thing about Spain is safety. It is EXTREMELY SAFE in terms of no violent crimes (unlike much of Latin America).

Yep, for the most part Spanish women HATE to talk about really deep stuff. Spanish guys, hit or miss. Most of them will tell you "you are very interesting" if you have deep stuff to say. But not much more gets done here. You occasionally find a remarkable individual, but you have to live here for YEARS to get to know them and really look around. They exist, but you have to really search for it.

Spanish women are indeed clingy as you say and depend way too much on their parents for comfort (at least, for my comfort).

With regard to your question, because for the first several years here, I really enjoyed it and was blinded by the "good times". I needed to mature more. Even several years ago many people told me to get out (with my qualifications and profile) but I was too taken in by the easy lifestyle here. I readily admit that was one of the worst mistakes I have made - delaying my professional experience and opportunities just for good and cheap easy times in Spain. My mistake, but I intend to move on and learn from it.

But they ARE politically correct in Spain. She wasn't saying that to be a "rebel" or "brave". It's just that here, political correctness is applied to other areas, not to immigration (YET), because immigration is a relatively new thing to Spain.

There are brawls in Spain, but many will not be Spaniards but rather foreigners living in Spain. If you go to Benidorm, for example, most people fighting are Brits, not local pussies.

They where Spanish and pretty jacked. I mingled with some of them before it happened.

So when a person speaks his/her mind, for you that is being "rebel" or "brave". That is called free speech. They are not politically correct as in other European shores, be assured of that. For the US I can not speak about, never been.

Edit: just scrolled trough your posts, and your presence here is no more no less than to bitch and whine about Spain, including this similar thread you started months ago. /thread-54252...pid1241462

I look and speak like a south american but i found the people to be friendly and didn't experience any racism personally. But i felt like they looked down on other south american people that lived in Spain. I just couldn't stand their accent it annoyed me too much LOL

No. When a person speaks their mind they are exercising freedom. My point is very easy to understand: the cashier woman was not expressing herself to be free, she just doesn't realize that in many other countries, she'd be fired for that. If I were to have asked her about things that are politically correct in Spain, she most certainly would have given me politically correct responses. Spaniards are much less guarded when they speak, I agree with that...that's because they never had a huge immigrant population living among them. They will soon shut up with the second generation Africans, Asians and Moroccans born here. Spanish are EXTREMELY politically correct in areas where they see everyone else is. "Monkey see, monkey do". They are less guarded with immigration though, but again, because it hasn't yet become a debate.

Homosexuality though is DEFINITELY touchy here and not even the most anti-gay preacher would dare make the kind of comments you see US pastors make. There is NO FREE SPEECH in Spain. Get that out of your head right now. If you insult the King, you will be fined, for example. There is also "the right to honor" here, which basically censors criticism of important figures. Spain is TERRIBLE when it comes to free speech.

They won't be racist to your face, but they will correct your vocabulary and tell you they speak the "pure" Spanish, which is BS. Brits tend to do that with Americans though...so...it seems to be that since Europe has been a failure in many areas since World War II, they need to lash out at something in order to keep thinking they are somehow relevant in the world.

And yes, people here DEFINITELY look down on South Americans.

RE: Thought about Spain after living there for 10 years
Here´s the newspaper:

https://www.diagonalperiodico.net/

The party was held in a warehouse.

Argentina has a lot of Italian influence. Maradona is not a spanish name.
When living in Spain I do remember this german always trashing the cleanliness of the place. When visiting Berlin realized she was a cunt. Berlin is a shithole. They have punks or whatever who piss and shit anywhere, besides turks and midle easterns in Kreuzberg. Everything she said about Spain dirtiness was stupid. Because Berlin was 10x worse.

You seem like a used car salesman always pointing out ridiculous faults. Most of them which can be attributed to any western country and are not spanish exclusive.

Still visiting the US twice per year and still went back to Spain. Brilliant.

In Madrid one of my roommates was irish. He would be discriminated. There´s racism against guiris, blacks, latin americans, etc, etc. JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER COUNTRY.

Taxi drivers, restaurants, etc. This is true. If you´re blue eyed and blonde you will not be fairly treated in Spain. Just like if your dark haired skinned you will not be fairly treated in Germany.

French, dutch and german take the cup in terms of racism and xenophobes in Europe though. This again is not a spanish thing.

You want to debate philosophy/politics with a woman? Why? Damn yankees. And you get surprised when your woman think they are man.

A woman exists to be a caring mother of your children. This is her job. And a small portion should be sluts for your weekend fun.

Picasso was spanish. As so many other. When in Madrid would visit Reina Sofia, Prado, etc. Barcelona Gaudi.

Dude get a grip. Your feeling burnout by society as a whole. And blaming it in Spain as a scapegoat. You can also be tired of the country like a spanish is, or a american, russian, turkish, etc get burned out. Simply because you need a new adventure. But this is you. Not Spain.

This doesn´t give you a carte blanche to make unwarranted claims. In the end spanish people hosted you. Be thankful.

We have in France hundreds of different kinds of sauces, wines and cheeses, hundreds of original, specific, tasty and subtle meals (from fondues or coquilles saint-jacques to parmentier , truffes or andouillettes, etc etc etc, take your pick)... Can any other country's foods compete, in sheer terms of diversity and excellence?
