That's not really a thing. Generally these attacks are just some guy snapping. Haven't read more than the comments here, but I'll speculate.

It wasn't a home for able-bodied folks. Dead of night. Knives are quiet.

The Japanese policy on muslims is that they need to GTFO. There are very, very few muslims in Japan.

This is very tragic, but will obviously be used by our politicians to make ridiculous claims like "See! More people are murdered in Japan than in Germany. There's nothing wrong with importing ISIS members!"

Before I begin, I want to preface this post by saying that my heart goes out to the victims involved. Having not read the reports thoroughly, I assume most of the victims involved were disabled, so they had to play the Game of Life on hard mode. I wish their families find the strength and solace they need to overcome this tragedy.

While Japan does get the immigration and crime prevention games right, sometimes there's a few mishaps to be found in an usually peaceful society. Like Phoenix mentioned, the overwhelming push to maintain 和 (wa - peace) at any cost, leaves people without much of an outlet. Couple that with the fact that the culture is a complex set of rules, duties, and other obligations (ESPECIALLY for the Japanese), it wouldn't shock me to see how some people feel trapped. Look at the statement the attacker said after being apprehended:

Before that, he was passing out leaflets near his workplace, saying how disabled people take up too many resources. I'm not saying that I'm Nostradamus and could've predicted an atrocity like this, but from the evidence, it seems as though he was getting frustrated with his lot in life. Not to mention what kind of employment hell he had to deal with at that job. Sometimes, we only see the tree when we hit our heads on one of the branches.

Second, since borrowing and spending money in the present is effectively stealing growth from the future, the more a country borrows, the harder it becomes to provide good jobs and effective public services for the people at the bottom of the economic ladder. It was a nursing home for disabled people. There are different levels of care facilities for mentally and physically disabled in Japan. Some of them are basically apartment buildings with an on-call nurse or monitor for those who are semi-independent or mobile. This facility sounds like it was for people who required much closer care and monitoring. Perhaps many of them were bedridden.

If so, there should have been one or two staff, at least, present in the building at 2 a.m. when the attack occurred. It sounds like the knifer, an ex-employee, did not attack them. I wonder what they were doing?
