But if this is really a coup, I won't be shedding any tears for Erdogan. The military has a special kind of legitimacy in Turkey as it has long safeguarded Turkish (secular) democracy by keeping Islamists at bay. We can hope this goes down without too much bloodshed.

Although Erdogan does not control the army, he still has a lot of popular support.
