It's too early to make sense of all this, but my preliminary guess is that it was a Gülen coup, backed by a neocon faction within the US/NATO deep state. Turkey has a very active Gladio cell (known as Gladio B). Kerry and Obama dropped them when it was apparent that the coup was a half-baked operation.
