Smaller in comparison in every aspect, 90% wood, why? wood is dark and is mostly associated with burning, too many stairs making the stage floor smaller, the screens in the background are not symmetric, the speaker in on the side of the stage screen rather than the center (the human brains is more comfortable with symmetric images than asymmetric ones), not using the big screen in the center to display the speaker and all other screens are display nothing but a single color red or blue (wasted of resource), all the light is coming from the top making the the stage looks darker in comparison with the surrounding. Why have the "Republican National Convention 2012" on display? people already know why and what for they are there, they do not need to be remembered that. The flags are too close to the floor (not patriotic and lack of respect for the country). The podium looks out of a High school graduation, why that other peace of wood next to the podium? water? again creating asymmetric thing for the brain. Desk of 3 people on the stage (the establishment old guard, the elite republicans) it distract attention from whoever is speaking, also empty chairs give the impression they did not want to show up.

The entire stage is a goddam stair, not American flag in sight ( again not patriotic and lack of respect for the country). One single big screen (lack of creativity), why the screen looks like a big T? is this a screen borrowed from Time Square Forever 21 store? again high school podium made of wood, peace of wood next to the podium (symmetric, remember?). The doors people are walking from behind are too visible. The stage floor is too low in comparison to the floor audience (not dominant position for whoever is on stage).

Besides the screen, what else is on stage design? absolutely nothing.

I don't know if Trump was involved in the plans for the convention but sure they really hit the cultural war with this stage, many people will say it doe not matter but in cultural war every details matters, is called iconography and branding and Trump is a master on both. In fact the stage looks like something MTV or Billboard will design for wards.

Trump parks his plane in the background of his rallies and let the door open at airports for the same reason, iconography and branding

As copying or "plagiarizing" goes, this is some seriously mild sauce soft shell taco weak generic stuff to get riled up about. "Have values, work hard and you can achieve anything you want if you just work hard enough!" is like Generic American Speech #17, it could've been said word for word from any random person in the US without any preparation.

Awkward that Trump campaign copied it word for word, could've easily just rephrased it, but if anybody thinks THAT is the killing blow that will bring down the Trump train, then those people are really desperate and grasping at straws.

Watching Trump's entrance and reading through your analysis has solidified my belief that we are watching a master at work here. Your point about the different stages and their effect on the visuals is absolutely essential to understanding what's going on here. The first thing that jumped out to me about the stage today was that it had an award ceremony vibe to it.

Then I watched his entrance and I was floored. He uses "We are the champions" by Queen, a song that is universally known throughout pop culture to introduce himself. A song so widely used in pop culture as the cathartic afterglow to a triumph.


What's the song all about? Hard work, Determination, Winning.


Trump doesn't just shamble onto the stage either. First you see his silhouette and then he slowly and with deliberation (while clapping!) walks towards the now rising podium. It was like watching the entrance of a wrestler, drenched with a theatrical feel. Can you imagine if that was Kasich? Or Jeb? Or god forbid it was Christie's silhouette that we saw?
And then Trump starts to speak and what are the first words out of his mouth?

"Thank you everybody, thank you, we love you, thank you very much...Oh we're gonna win, we're gonna win so big."

Not only is Trump up on a stage like he's at the Oscars accepting an award, he has a wrestlers entrance set to the most well known song associated with winning. What's that on the screen behind him? Oh it's just pictures of all his supporters and his name and the word America as we hear "..champions....of the world!". Oh and if that wasn't enough, his first words even sound like he's accepting an award and thanking the academy.

Trump adds a dash of NLP at the end too. What are we all thinking after watching his entrance?

They were never going to allow an attractive, feminine woman that speaks in a foreign accent get away with anything.

Regardless, I'm not sure if this was a deliberate troll. The media was going to cover it no matter what. It was too big to ignore. I don't think General Flynn did bad. He was feeding off the energy of the crowd. The biggest problem last night was that it should have ended with Melania.

Melania was obviously the headliner and the main event. She should have closed the show. Everyone that came after her was going to pale in comparison just because the tension was released, aside from the hour getting late. It was also bad optics that Trump left his own convention while General Flynn (a top surrogate of his) and others were still speaking. That was bad organization, period. This is Trump's biggest problem. Too much of an ENTP.

Also, I would begin the "upper card" of prime time speakers an hour earlier. That way it ends an hour earlier. No one really wants to stay up to midnight watching this thing.

I can't see how this is an elaborate troll on Trump's part, although I did hear some assume the sale type of language coming from presenters in what little coverage I've seen. Mentioning how Melania lifted words from 'another' First Lady, and things like that. The side by side comparison does look bad, but the phrases are so generic that nobody outside media pundits will give a shit.

It gives them the out they were looking for to drown out the fact that she executed it in an impressive manner befitting of the First Lady, but anyone who actually saw it or sits down to watch the whole thing later won't be bothered so much. The plus side is that there are a whole new round of speeches tonight, meaning the media will only have 12 hours or so to whip up a frenzy. I expect Christie, Carson, and particularly Don Jr. to be extremely strong tonight, and give enough soundbites to wash away the stink from last night.
