Protestors are there to provide an alternative to actually covering what the event speakers have to say. Reporters get sent in to cover a big event, and the protestors give them an opportunity to set the tone of the coverage in a negative way. The reporters want to do it that way from the beginning regardless, I've watched them fishing around for the people whose quotes fit into the story they've already got in mind. Watch for when the person they're talking to says the wrong thing, and the news guys are all thanks-for-talking-with-us-goodbye! It's not about reporting the news, it's about making the news.
