Mid-Life Crisis Double Standard
Reading through tenderman's posts in the excellent "End Game" thread got me thinking about this topic again, and I noticed another interesting quirk in our society: the characterization of the "mid-life crisis" and how it differs between the genders.

Have any of you guys ever noticed how it is that in the mainstream American(and British) media we make fun of older men but not their female equivalents?

Cougars are just hip women in their "sexual prime"(40 is the new 30!) trying to exercise their liberation. These women can do whatever they want to try and remain relevant(surgery, banging younger guys, sport-fucking, etc) and generally be deemed ok, but the men their age are in a "mid life crisis" if they even think about flaunting their success a little (buying a Porsche).

A woman passes her sexual prime/expiration date and society deems her relevant/worthwhile almost regardless of what she does. But an older successful male is in a crisis for showing it-why is that? It seems natural that someone who has worked and succeeded might reward himself a bit, yet here we seem to almost look down on it.

It seems like society, which is so quick to label older men, would not be so quick to place such that label on women like this who seem to be dealing with their own mid-life issues. They're just "liberated".

I am tempted to conclude that men should, in all cases, ignore all warnings of looking as though they are in a "mid-life crisis", and simply do(or purchase) whatever pleases them. Our society has a lot of grand shaming tactics designed to make men feel bad for doing things that honestly seem quite natural, and I think this "mid-life crisis" phenomenon is one of them.

This might just be another shit-test on steroids. The only older men who pass are the ones who ignore it, and give it zero consideration.

Just a thought.

Know your enemy and know yourself, find naught in fear for 100 battles. Know yourself but not your enemy, find level of loss and victory. Know thy enemy but not yourself, wallow in defeat every time.

That's cause our media is run by gays, jews, and women. Male interests are very underrepresented.

I think a woman without children advancing into her 40's should be looked upon as a diseased harpy, something like an AIDS victim, and young daughters everywhere should be exhorted to never succumb to such whoring ways.

RE: Mid-Life Crisis Double Standard
What we see in the MSM about gender is pretty much the opposite of how most people really feel in everyday life.

No one really looks at a guy in his 40's or 50's driving a porsche and goes "wow he must be having a mid-life crisis". They think "damn, nice car good for him" or if they are a hater, "fuck that motherfucker".

They see an older guy with a girlfriend in her 20's and they think "damn, nice chick good for him" or if they are a hater, "fuck that motherfucker."

Now, if most people see an older woman in her 40's or 50's with a boyfriend in his 20's they usually think "damn he's with her for the money/easy sex/something other than love and admiration".

The difference is that men are respected, even when there are negative reactions. Women are coddled. They are told it's okay and everything will work out as long as you work this much, buy this, and do what we (advertisers) tell you to do. I'd rather be respected and go after what I want than have smoke blown up my ass all my life to realize it was all a lie.

The MSM is bullshit and is a tool to placate women into a soulless life of consumerism and corporate slavery brainwashing them into thinking that the same things that make a man attractive, make a woman attractive.

I'd much rather be lightly ridiculed by haters and jealous types than only able to get a fuck thrown at me after the mark has eleven drinks in their stomach.

EDIT:
Quote:The MSM is bullshit and is a tool to placate women into a soulless life of consumerism and corporate slavery brainwashing them into thinking that the same things that make a man attractive, make a woman attractive.

There's a lot of truth in this as well, especially about the MSM. My theory is that the MSM appeals to and coddles women for one reason and one reason only; because women tend to buy more shit than men (seriously...how many of you have fucked a girl who made less money than you but had an apartment full of pricey useless trinkets and 'designer labels' that she picked up on credit?).

Ever notice when a hot new show comes out, or during awards season, that armies of women are 'lining up to get the dress that such and such actress wore to the Oscars!' or 'Looking for the necklace that so and so wore in that episode of that stupid show that I love?'

As a man, I can watch Mad Men and admire the steez of Don Draper or watch Bond and say 'James is pretty wicked...' without wanting to look like them; I may try to appropriate some of the personality, not clone the look.

You suddenly tell women that they're wrong, you bring that gravy train to a screeching halt. The MSM doesn't like women more than men; they're just aware that it's far easier to exploit them for monetary gain.

RE: Mid-Life Crisis Double Standard
I think the midlife crisis stereotype is aimed at a guy in his 50s that leaves his wife for a younger girl and gets a Vette.
Not so much an older guy who has been a playboy and driving fast cars his whole life.

In Florida there are loads of 40+ guys sporting Donzis with fine ass bikinis all over them. Its kinda normal. The only people who hate on them are the ones that cant afford it. And there are plenty of haters..trust me.

In Greece they have the "Mati" or evil eye. Its brings hating to another level. Its not just that you are getting hated on for being successful and having nice toys,,that brand of hate also wishes sickness on you!! So this has been going on for centuries, its not just an American thing.

If any forum members need to have the "Mati" removed, P.M me for surefire family recipies.

This. I thought about it for a second, and realized no one actually respects cougars. Everyone besides the cougars themselves mocks them relentlessly. Especially the 28-30 year olds on the cusp of cougarhood. Older dudes get knocked only when they're hitting up girls below 25.

The women in the media pushing cougars are desperately flapping their arms to slow their rapid descent into sexual irrelevance. It's most keenly felt when men their age ignore them.

Quote:Many believe that men go through a midlife crisis when they are in middle age. Not quite. Many middle-aged men do go through midlife crises, but it's not because they are middle-aged. It's because their wives are. From the evolutionary psychological perspective, a man's midlife crisis is precipitated by his wife's imminent menopause and end of her reproductive career, and thus his renewed need to attract younger women. Accordingly, a 50-year-old man married to a 25-year-old woman would not go through a midlife crisis, while a 25-year-old man married to a 50-year-old woman would, just like a more typical 50-year-old man married to a 50-year-old woman. It's not his midlife that matters; it's hers. When he buys a shiny-red sports car, he's not trying to regain his youth; he's trying to attract young women to replace his menopausal wife by trumpeting his flash and cash.

I've long maintained that if you replaced a 55 year old man's fat, bitchy, wrinkly 48 year old wife with a hot, sweet nubile 22 year old co-ed, he'd be able to get it up without Viagra.

I've read somewhere that the female population between 30-40 is the most significant TV media consumer. Which means most TV channels (and advertisers) cater to them, and this may also explain this phenomenon (and it is ironic to think that I contribute to this situation by not watching TV at all).

At the same time, do you think it actually changes anything? I have very few American friends, but my impression so far is that if a dude dates a much younger chick, everyone would say "he is lucky, and she is cool". If the same dude dates a much older chick, everyone would say "she is lucky, and he is loser". So the values didn't seem to change.

Actually if the girl is in her prime, early 20s or younger, they say, "He is a pedo, she has daddy issues."

If there is a more than 5 year difference the guy is made to feel like a pervert.

After the girl is 30 nobody seems to care though.

RE: Mid-Life Crisis Double Standard
People may laugh at an older guy buying a Porsche and trying to get a younger girlfriend, but they'd laugh a lot harder at a similarly over-the-hill older woman doing it. It also doesn't look bad at all when an older guy without a pot belly, who is not balding and is good looking goes out with 28 year olds.

The media always paints cougars as being hot and usually having money. The reality is that most women in their 40's and 50s have had 2 or 3 kids and have completely dumpy looking bodies. Just picture this mother/homemaker, in makeup and heels, at the local bar trying to pick up 30 year old guys......

FYI, I don't need the little blue pill for either the 21 year old coed or the 41 year old MILF.

But then again, I eat clean, work out like a maniac, and take my vitamins.

Personally, I could give two shits what the main stream media says. However, I am conscious that some people WILL look at me that way, seeing as how I am 59. So I purposefully make sure that no one I deal with -- whether professionally, personally, or sexually -- thinks of me that way.

In the end, I want to surprise them.

Today, I worked out with a daughter of an old friend who is between apartments in Chicago and is staying with me for a few days until she gets settled. . She is an actress...beautiful...but, no, I would not fuck her because, well, she is the daughter of an old friend. But together we did Insanity and though I couldn't quite keep up with her, I held my own.

I was drenched in sweat when it was over, and so was she, and she was amazed. "Sweetheart" I told her, "it's not about age, it's about will."

So she knows that there is no "mid life crisis." The MILF I am fucking, and the Harvard coed I am fucking know that too. Because it's about the will.

The only "they" who seem to say this is women - mostly older women who are angry at either (1) the man for having a conventional sex drive (i.e. aimed at fertile young women) or (2) the young woman for taking one of "their" men.

I've almost never seen guys shit-talking their bros who date down in age - usually it's high-fives and "congrats" rather than hate. (Exceptions include jealous guys / haters without game.)

Actually young guys hate it too. The guys in her peer group are the biggest cockblocks around and probably have more influence on her than the older female hags who hate it for obvious reasons.

Imagine you are a young guy who has it really bad for this hot 21 year old in your class. But, you find out that she is dating a 30 something year old guy. What do you do? RE: Mid-Life Crisis Double Standard
As others have noted, mainstream media is pretty much entirely consumed by women. The only exception seems to be sports. If you turn on the television during the day you see talk shows, shows about decorating and fashion, etc. If you glance at the magazine rack in the supermarket near the cashier, all the magazines are aimed at women telling them how to lose 10 pounds this week by powerwalking and the "secret" to getting the best fucking ever. If men didn't think they needed to take women to the movies as a pre-cursor to fornication, theaters would probably lose a lot of business as well.

When men have free time they pretty much do things like watch or play sports, drink beers, play video games, watch pornography... not watch Grey's Anatomy or Project Runway. Media networks know this and target women accordingly.

I really can't even watch television anymore aside from an occasional football game or something. When you get to a point where you realize you're wiser than 99% of the people doing the reporting, you can't take their commentary or advice seriously.

Nonpareil Wrote:Ever notice when a hot new show comes out, or during awards season, that armies of women are 'lining up to get the dress that such and such actress wore to the Oscars!' or 'Looking for the necklace that so and so wore in that episode of that stupid show that I love?'

This is one of the most significant differences between the genders and I really didn't notice it until a few years ago. Women really cannot do any kind of detached reflection. Media networks can pretty much manufacture hype around an event, fashion, tv show, or movie, and women will all follow suit and assume they need to be somehow involved and inthe loop on that shit even though it's meaningless. They really do not think twice about whether any clothing or media event is worth wasting time and money on. Thus they're easier to exploit... even game is a product of realizing uniformities in female psychology and exploiting them.

This is dysfunctional because it's totally detached from female biology, whereas males are designed to tolerate aging better. They can blame nature or god or whatever they believe in, but at the end of the day the media networks telling women they they "still got it at 40" isn't going to stop the stretch marks and wrinkles from appearing. It bothers me because it's totally dishonest, but women eat the shit up so it continues.

RE: Mid-Life Crisis Double Standard
Fundamental mis-understanding about the male mide life crisis is that most people think it has something to do with the age of the man.

It does not. It's about the age of the woman you are with.

If you are 50-55, married and your wife is the same age it means she is menopausal or about to be.

On other words she is running out of eggs and her reproductive role is at its end. If that's your only woman then that means you role is about to end too. Hence the need for men (conciously or unconciously) to attract younger women. Hence the harley / porsche buying and dressing like a teenager with dudes going through this.

If you are 50-55 and you are banging a 25 year old you can not have a mid life crisis.

If you are 25 and are banging a 50 year old then you can.

So you see its all about her age, not yours.

RE: Mid-Life Crisis Double Standard
I've enjoyed reading all of these replies. They've been eye-opening.

So, at the end of the day, it would appear that women, though they seem to have everything on lock (dominating college demographics, feminized media, earning more between ages of 20 and 30, etc) are really just being used.

The powers that be who control things (I'm guessing that these are largely male) simply exploit them in order to feed an economy dependent on consumerism. They pander to female interests and propagate some philosophies(the ones we complain about here) all in order to keep the money flowing in.

The promotion of certain things like the cougar phenomenon might seem silly at first, but they are profitable. Women who think they don't need men at all and end up trying to follow the Carrie Bradshaw model of life are women who will be independent and larger consumers at the end of the day than they would be under the auspices of a more "traditional" lifestyle.

Feminism and all of the ideology surrounding it that seems anti-male actually just makes it a bit easier to profit from female spending habits(more single/empowered women = more spenders), while changing very little in the practical mindset (ex: 40 really isn't the new 30, regardless of how much you repeat it).

Interesting. Might as well enjoy the ride, I guess.

Good point. The younger guys aren't "bros" with the older man dating their crush, and the younger women aren't likely to care what some jealous older woman thinks. It's one thing to reject the opinion of random strangers but shaming by peers is a lot tougher to resist.

Guys like Roissy, Fernindand Bardamu, Pook, some other MRA writers have been preaching this for quite some time now. Worth checking into if you find this interesting.

RE: Mid-Life Crisis Double Standard
In western society, women are overvalued while men are undervalued. Feminism is not about equality; it's about a power grab for women at the expense of men. Therefore, even when the truth is staring at their faces that men have some biological advantages (higher sex drives, longer sex lives, more likely to be a genius, etc.), the media is quick to try to cover it up in any way.

Here is a secret that feminists, deep down in their hearts, know is real. It is a power that virtually all men have, yet far too few realize it.

Women fear judgment. Not just from other women and (alpha) males at the top of society, but any man who has the respect of other men (which is just about everybody). Women have a herd mentality. They worry what their friends will think and say. Women go to their friends to acceptance and support. You saw it with Jaclyn Friedman when she posted on Feministe about becoming a slut; however, notice that she's begging and looking to other women for their approval:

Quote:I’m telling you this because sluthood requires support….A slut needs a posse who finds her exploits almost as delicious as she finds them herself, who cares about her safety and her stories and her happiness but not one whit about her virtue…even if you don’t ever want sluthood for yourself, you’re going to be called upon to support a slut. I’m telling you this because when that happens, I want you to say yes.

Sound kinda needy and desperate?

You saw it with the SlutWalks. We all know that it was never about the Toronto police officer saying that rape is O.K.; rather, the SlutWalks were a movement for the social acceptance of female promiscuity. In the PUA community, this judgment comes closest in the form of "negging." The lowly unknown police officer passed on judgment that women should not dress like "sluts" to avoid getting into trouble set off a worldwide firestorm of angry feminists who were offended that a respected man passed judgment on certain women.

Feminists realize this power that men have and want to get rid of it. That is why older men exercising their power terrifies women. In order to try to counter this judgmental (negging) power that men have over women, the strategy is just to talk so loud and so much that men virtually forget this power. Another way is to use shaming tactics ("Grow up." "Mature." etc). Unfortunately, their strategy seems to have worked since not too many men are "negging" women. Fortunately, for the few men who do realize this power, they will be rewarded will overflowing waterfalls of pussy.

Hello.
