Especially if one is wearing very nice clothing? Is it just a matter of staying alert and aware as well as trying not to walk on the streets at night? I've heard the cops will pull you over and basically rob you themselves. I'm just curious

Haha your question is funny. And you said it yourself, its just a matter of knowing where you should walk and where you shouldnt. On a side note, getting robbed is one thing, and getting murdered is another one.

I'd definitely stay out of the Mexican border towns, though.

It's funny how 99% of Americans (regardless of political persuasion) absolutely hate the fucking American news media, but 99% of Americans nevertheless will believe all the inaccurate and BS reporting of foreign locations by the same news media. It's absurd.

You could travel to every single country in the world and you would struggle to consistently find places that are as dangerous as the typical American inner city.

Really? You've been a member of this forum for almost a year, have read hundreds of South America travel posts, and are asking how not to "die" in South America. Are you trolling?

"You could travel to every single country in the world and you would struggle to consistently find places that are as dangerous as the typical American inner city."

I think this is true.

I have had guns pulled on me, and shot at. Only in American cities.

I did have a knife pulled on me in Spain though. And beat down in Mex.

All in all, America seems way more dangerous.

In Africa, I wore black face all the time and I was fine. I think the trick is to look like a local.

Be more specific. For example, I try to limit my intake of fried foods to prevent a heart attack.

Being serious, in MX don't go to:

Nuevo Laredo
Matamoros
Reynosa
Cd. Juárez

Common sense applies in all the other places. The narcowar is between narcos and narcos-federal forces, of course some innocents (unfortunately) die but it's not the norm. If some guy appears murdered and tortured they always say: "Andaba movido" or "Andaba metido" that means the guy was involved in some illegal business.

I caught 3 cases of AIDS in Mexico and died from the 1st one. On a trip to Peru the plane crashed in the Andes and the survivors ate my liver w/ a side of fava beans to survive. I got drunk in Brasil, falling off the fishing boat and was eaten by a ravenous pack of piranhas. Guess I can't really give any advice on staying alive. If anyone does let me know cuz my 9 lives are running out fast.

You'll be fine...even in Monterrey, Mexico by a few simple modifications to your standard pickup..

This shit is ridiculous! The drug runners have built their own tanks so they can drive freely around town during the day...

Considering most of the violence is fueled by americants who are buying drugs and selling weapons who cares if a few spoiled yuppie tourists get washed. I don't personally. Most latin girls also don't like americants, so don't deceive yourself into thinking that's how it is.

Mrs Chocolate, there is a huge difference between living somewhere and visiting somewhere. Tourists are always a target because they are not familiar with the territory.
It's the same reason why mosquitoes bite the shyt out of visitors (initially) but the locals don't even get a sniff.
Get with the program, ma...

Ha. My uncle gets put in the hospital everytime he comes to Florida from red ants! They don't even bite me anymore.

Bit of common sense is all that's needed and a bit of luck too. You could get robbed, you probably won't. People do though so be alert, don't carry expensive stuff with you, don't dress overly flash, take just the money you need with you out both at day and night.
