Money/power makes you more "you". It doesn't necessarily change you, it just reveals your true nature.

Not exactly related but a historian just put out a theory saying Caligula wasn't that bad (or bad in a different way), then compared him to Trump.

Holland said there were parallels with what Trump has done to the Republican establishment.

“Trump has said and done things that are utterly shocking by the standards of traditional political morality, but far from making him unpopular with the masses there is a sense in which he has become the toast of the people.”

As well as trampling down the elite, Caligula was – like Trump – a conscious populist and sponsored chariot races and made a huge six-horse chariot for himself, which he would drive around Rome showing off.

“He did all the things that the people thought an emperor should do … they loved him for it.”

Treating the senate like dirt meant he was able to crush any conspiracy with ease.

Caligula’s reputation has not been done any favours by his portrayal on TV and film. Different generations may remember John Hurt’s portrayal of him in the 1970s BBC TV series I Claudius and the shocking, invented, scene where he appeared with a bloody face after eating the foetus torn from his sister’s stomach.

Or Malcolm McDowell’s performance in the semi-pornographic 1979 film Caligula, produced by Penthouse supremo Bob Guccione.

The most famous story about Caligula, that he planned to make his horse his consul, is too often misinterpreted, said Holland.

It should not be seen as Caligula being unhinged – he was saying even the consulship, the highest office in Rome, was in his power. “It is a bitter, cruel joke about the reality of autocracy,” said Holland.

The knives were always out for Caligula but his downfall was entirely his fault, said Holland. “He just could not help himself.”

Caligula told a captain in the Praetorian guard that he sounded like a girl. And the Praetorian killed him.

I don't think I'd be very depraved at all, really. Oh, I'd have my harem and so on, but I would spend my time building things, improving my civilization, and possibly conquering the neighbors if they pissed me off or I needed their resources.

Of course, I would be ruthless to my enemies, especially the ones posing as friends. Can't have people thinking I'm soft and trying to assassinate me every other day. Ain't nobody got time for that.

If I was an ancient ruler, I would introduce this law - if you accuse someone of doing a wrongful act (i.e rape) and is proven to be false, you would be charged double the equivalent punishment for the crime you accused the other party of doing.

And, after the sentence is carried out, I would either behead you, or cut off your tongue (depends on how I feel on a particular day), in order to prevent you from falsely accusing anyone...ever again.


I would write the law to look something like this:

Quote:"Falsely accusing someone for a wrongful act, regardless of intention, will result in a punishment for the accusing party which will be equivalent, and no less, to double the amount than the prescribed punishment for the wrongdoing the accusing party accused the accused party of committing."

Fact:

This is apparently from the Hammurabi Code (one of the oldest, if not the oldest source of law). But, I made it slightly...more severe.



If this law was implemented today, then the rape statistics would drop like 10000%...overnight.

You say something like this would work, however this law would also be fairly easy to manipulate and has the possibility to be worse than a simple rape accusation.

As for OP, I'm not even sure everyone here would be depraved. If you are a leader the only thing that would really give you a challenge would be appealing. Women would become so trivial it would be a matter of calling one when you had free time and had the urge. Those with eyes for only the desires of the flesh have shallow and narrow vision.

thats because many of them were trapped in the male section of the harem for decades in isolation by their older brothers. The old ottoman custom was to strangle every single male sibling but they instituted this to keep backup sucessors.

I'd probably put on shit tons of muscle and lead wars of conquest. As anyone who has played Civ on this forum with me can tell you, I really like doing that. I'll leave running domestic affairs to Quintus Curtius. Probably have a nice stable of 2-3 wives tops.

Not a fan of huge harems they just aren't intimate enough(well also the fact that I don't want my children by different harem wenches to be killed by other harem wenches).

That isn't to say I wouldn't sleep around past that point. I would probably also disguise myself and take strolls as a commoner as well.
