I never drank all that much. I was straight edge for a long time, and I'm technically not anymore but I'm still a teetotaler for the most part. I'll occasionally nurse a dry wine on a date (mainly to make the girl more comfortable with me) or at a social occasion, but no more than that really. I'm usually that guy drinking club soda at the bar. Drinking heavily really does a lot of damage to your body and I'm glad I avoided that.

It's a stunner indeed. I did not want to spoil the story, but the little beta baboons emotional state and how it was tied to their physical health was extremely eye opening.

Even when you are going through absolute hell, having the mental clarity to be relaxed can prevent all of those physical side effects. Mentally you have to be to a point where you can toss your arms into the sky and fall back without wondering about what is underneath you, to avoid the deadly effects of stress. Trust in Christ that he will never put more on you than you can bear helps tremendously.

That is why I tell some guys, do not be afraid to start over again. The Bible even says despise not these humble beginnings. Once you are too afraid to start over, the enemy has you gotten. Possessions can be regained, no one can steal your mindset. As a man you just need a tiny amount of fear to prevent killing yourself in arrogance. Taking everything too seriously will kill you, literally.

Damn I simply couldn't stop reading this post in the last few days. Completed a career change in the construction field, but unfortunately the starting wages are below my budget maintenance point, even if I squeeze my expenses. Contemplated going back to my corporate field where incompetent women easily rise. This post helped me say No to this idea. I'll have to move back in with my parents for about a year to build back my savings, and raise my Credit score. I won't make as much as I used to, but damn I'll be happy on the job... thanks to this post!

Alcohol in moderation is not bad for the heart, to the contrary. It helps if you're into wine, one or two glasses with a meal will help keep the pump and plumbing going.

I'm glad you lived to see another day and you can't be more right about stress, it is the real silent assassin. For a few years I was struggling with a chronic stress which manifested itself in the form of heart sensations. After a few bad incidents and a lot of tests it turned out I was basically fine, not perfect but fine. It was psychological. What I found was that I had two types of stress. One operated on short term, had more effects and went away quickly. The other one was a sort of a stress baseline, like a constant hum of a CRT television, always there. It was the real culprit. Lowering and getting rid of it took me months but it eventually went away and I have been fine for 3 years now. I learned to detense my diaphragm, music helped me a lot and I started to go with the flow. My heart is calm now.

The less you struggle the better your off. Everyone has to find a way to gain deep rooted calm. A lot of people are ripping their veins out for something that looses all meaning when they end up in hospital.

To generalize a bit, it's not just anger or workplace stress but stress in general that leads to major illness. I readan article years ago (sorry I don't have the source) that major stresses, especially in a shorttime from more than one event (death of close family member, major financial setback, major success, major work promotion or demotion, graduating fromcollege, major change in daily routine etc.) led to major illness in a substantial number of people. Some of it may be directly from stress, some of it indirectly (coping with stress with less exercise, overeating,smoking more, drinking more, sleeplessness causedby stress.)

I've alsoread that a heart attack often feels like indigestion, and men especially are less likely to get it checked just in case, because we feellessmasculine if we complain about minor ailments.

To Mr. Lemon, some of these medications can have huge side effects especially on the liver and kidneys. Good idea to get frequent blood tests, even if you have to persuade your doctor toprescribe them and have to pay for them yourself.

This thread has been bothering me for weeks now. I hope I don't get warn for this so here goes. It's something that has to be said.

I feel for OP, and hope he makes a full recovery and gets his bloodwork done. Maybe stress did it, maybe eating unhealthy oils contributed. I don't know. I can only speculate. Genetics maybe? I just hope he'll be OK.

I get that it is about how women can kill you deader than shit with nagging, how they should not have power or authority over men, all things I agree with. Stress kills. That being said, what was stopping OP from going to business for himself? Or just sitting around and collecting welfare? There's no shame in getting money the government is willing to hand out if you need time to get your head on straight. There is no shame in accepting charity from a food shelf. Or living in a section 8 housing bloc. I'm still a poor fucker and carefully looking for a job with no income ceiling, probably in sales. I fully intend on making a million dollars a year by 30. Nobody is forced to work in this free market. What's so wrong about working a few cash jobs with Mexicans, hitting up local food shelves, and growing potatoes out back? Possum living? Being a short term bricklayer or stone mason? Taxi driver? Barkeep? Getting rid of your house and buying a VW microbus? I lived off (estimate) about eight thousand dollars last year, and I like to party hard. A frugal lifestyle will do more to clear one's conscience of the turmoil of consumerism than anything else. I am trying to plant a garden somewhere right now. The community garden is ... not bad but I don't like to associate with smug liberals if I can avoid it. If my landlord continues being unreasonable I may be forced into it, as it's a short bike ride away.

You have to own your own decisions - if you're high on the hedonic treadmill and demand a certain (high) standard of living to provide for you or the other people in your life, and yourself, then sure - sickness, illness, or injury can happen. If your reputation is that important, maybe you have no freedom in life. But that's on you. Not your boss. Your boss doesn't make you buy nice shit or drink fancy liquor. Your boss doesn't make you drink an eight dollar latte and buy the expensive cigarettes. Your boss doesn't make you get gifts and fancy spa treatments for your wife in exchange for sex. Your boss doesn't make your children ingrates and demanding of expensive things for their own amusement. Your boss doesn't make you kiss ass and give little treats to the high-rolling cocksuckers who wield immense power over you. That's on you. I knew this as a child and have slowly divested myself of all things material long ago. If my place gets robbed, so what? They probably needed that shit to buy drugs. If they take my Bible, though, I'm going after them with a machete and an axe.

Your boss might be the worst person in the world- I've had plenty of bosses and all of them were, to some degree, assholes. I am never going to work a long stint for another man, ever again - unless it's an equal partnership in a business. I'd make an exception for Donald Trump, as he is the fucking man. A woman boss you could wield power over if you fuck her and wrap her around your little finger, which I'd probably do if necessary.

If you're seriously driven to madness or illness by your boss, tell them to fuck off and find another way to make money. Do yourself a favor, get your phone out of your pocket, and tell them to fuck right off. Right now. Imagine the immense shock to hear their peon telling them to fuck off. If they ask for the two weeks, tell them to fuck themselves. If that's not protocol, well protocol can fuck off too. If they get upset you won't be around to bring a dish to pass for the potluck on the 4th of July, tell them that would not be a problem if their wives weren't cunts. No man in the whole world owes anybody even a minute of his precious time if he doesn't have complete consent. If they don't like it, sue them. Don't be in denial about self-destructive behavior. Take action or eat the consequences. I have worked 100 hour weeks to hustle money when needed and it's complete hell.

When I got arrested and put in the asylum, I made an extra effort to destroy the lead psychiatrist's career. A few guys came up with the idea and I jumped and ran with it. If she's still working there in six months when I go check up on them, I'm drafting another complaint with the knowledge that she's fucking somebody high up on the food chain. She might be fucking a few people, who knows? If I have to go to the board of trustees of the hospital and threaten to smear their ward with valid complaints, I'll fucking do it. I owe it to those crazy people in there. My professional reputation is fucked anyway and I have absolutely nothing to lose.

I'm more or less self employed for this same reason. Every regular job I work - I view it as a client/consultant relationship where I can walk out at any time. For any reason.

A frugal lifestyle is like paying yourself a salary of freedom. Those habits endure for life.

If I really need money right now, I can walk down the street to where a house is being built and probably have a job in ten minutes, slinging 2x4s and hammering nails, probably ten bucks an hour cash on the barrelhead. Manual labor, out in the sunshine, is good for the soul. It's honest work.

I have a very high mechanical aptitude because I'm not a pretentious shithead and enjoy hanging out and drinking with blue collar types. Working out in the sunshine probably makes your dick bigger. That's freedom man, and the more people understand that you have to seek and embrace freedom, the better off everybody will be.

If working as an engineer pays my debts - then great - if I'm unhireable and have to work as a welder, also great. I bet I could make a hundred bucks an hour welding in the right place. Maybe on nuclear submarines or some shit. I don't care. Not a care in the world with my attitude. My home is the few yards of earth around my feet and it always will be. I keep a sleeping bag in my car in case opportunity knocks, whether it be cash or pussy.

Every place I work I try to make it better for me, and that makes it better for everybody else working there. Lead by example. Encourage somebody who actually contributes. Encourage means "to give courage". Women used to do that for their husbands. Men used to do that for each other. Nobody does that anymore. Do the world a favor and tell somebody who deserves it to fuck off today.

Hades, not everybody is good enough at manual labor to be able to make decent money. I have a friend who is handy and works manual jobs now. He gave up a decent office job because he hated office politics. He makes ends meet, but it's a hard job. He has to carry heavy blocks of concrete from time to time. This kind of shit is not good for his health.

It's good on you that you are frugal and know better than wasting money on broads and spoiled children. Still, life is tough as I'm sure you know. The lines for section 8 are very long. In places like nyc, they don't even take new applications. Whatever welfare a single guy can get is not enough to make ends meet. Welfare may work for single mothers, but not for us men.

Anyway, my point is there is no easy way to avoid all the bullshit that leads to heart attacks and other health problems. Maybe there is in places like Norway, but not in America.

Yeah I understand that - which is why it's not a terribly great idea to work in construction for the long term. The risk of losing life or limb due to accident is pretty high. Wrecking your knees or back can make for a difficult and painful life. My old high school teacher made that point repeatedly.

However, it shouldn't have to take your entire life to address your personal demons or address stress-related health issues either. A year or two break in an honest profession might be all that's required.

Working at a video store spreading joy to children or running a hot dog cart are virtuous professions too. I see a lot of lawyers in bars drinking themselves slowly to death, and it's plainly obvious they need to quit being lawyers for a little while at least. People worry way too much about money and assorted shit. If you're a masculine man, your wife probably won't leave you if you carefully explain you have to get the fuck out of your job or risk having a mental breakdown. She might like that you've selectively opened up to her, who knows?

I was just mentioning the construction type work as an example. Lots of guys here lift, tan, and try to stay in shape, and that's a good way to do it. The pay is decent and oftentimes cash. The movie Office Space is it's own sort of parable to the modern times, really.

I'd say probably the happiest guy I know runs his own tiny welding shop and carpentry shop, being your own boss at anything is the way to live, in my opinion.

I agree about just doing something different to get out of the rat race. When I talk about this with friends, I use the example of quitting the rat race to go run a surf shop at Ft. Lauderdale. It doesn't have to be construction. There are plenty of lower stress jobs that pay enough to cover a comfortable minimalist lifestyle.

However, in my case, I got out of the race race for a couple of years, ran down my savings, and ran up debts. Now I'm back in a high paying job, with a better mental frame, but I need to stay at this pay level for a while to really get my finances together.

Like the Possum Living reference. It may not be slick or swank, but it is definitely thinking for yourself, and not worrying what anyone else thinks.

Also, sometimes these simple jobs that fulfill a need make big bucks quietly, and give back to the community by doing what needs doing rather than living a poorly thought out dream.

I will quote an example from John Taylor Gatto about a woman who sells shrimp by the side of the road in Hawaii:

It averages 100 to 150 shrimp sales a day, but has sold as many as 300. When the owner-proprietress isn’t there, one of her three daughters takes over. Each is only a high school graduate. For all I know, the only thing saleable any of them knows how to do is cook shrimp and rice, but they do that very well. The family earns in excess of a quarter million dollars a year selling shrimp plates out of an old truck. They have no interest in expanding or franchising the business. 2) being in a LTR I wasn't happy in
3) dwelling in the past re: my family's bullshit

I've had assholes for bosses and whenever they started their little shitfits I'd just stand there and smile. That pisses them off more, but it wasn't actionable and so they had to suck it up.

"I NEED THIS DONE YESTERDAY!"

*with a smile* "Oh I'll do my darn best, but it seems improbable."

Either one of two things will happen. They will fire you, which is the same as quitting only you have options for redundancy or law suits, or they stop hassling you because you don't give them the sense of power that their little outbursts are all about generating.

The last job I quit was ironically because the boss didn't do anything. The monkeys were running the zoo and some of them were real bitches who, in the absence of legally being able to punch them in the face, were more or less beyond my control to discipline. This is otherwise known as the public sector.

I'm quite happy living a minimalist lifestyle for now. I have plans for making money but nothing that relies on me to run around like a lunatic. And as has been mentioned above, if the government insists on taking the vast majority of everything I earn then I'm only too happy to sit on my ass and give my time exclusively to my kids and to my political troublemaking hobby.

Yes. That is excellent advice.

One time this over-stressed gigantic shithead at the factory job (he's a peon of the supervisor, a "little Napolean") I used to work freaked right the fuck out because I stole his work gloves (disposable) during shift change. The storage locker was empty. He had no name scrawled on them.

He runs over and starts screaming at me, I don't care that he has at least 30-40 pounds of muscle on me. There's cameras everywhere and it's unlikely he'd take a swing.

I just stared at him with some concern. Why would a grown man give a shit about his free disposable gloves at the end of the work day?

He just burned himself out yelling and yelling, then wandered off in shame. That's the way to handle conflict. Be calm as the bomb but pay attention to their hands in case they take a swing. I just smiled at him and that fucked with his head worse than anything.

This is what comes to mind when I read stories that say "oh the gig economy is destroying worker's income"

It may destroy stability, but having 3-4 customers/employers is empowering as a worker. You can lose, or tell, a customer to fuck off on any given day an not lose all of your income in one shot.

That ability has been one of the most rewarding parts of being self employed for me. My business has been blessed to be bursting at the seams with prospective customers. I have slowly dropped the ones that caused me way too much stress and give quotes of 3 to 4x my regular rates for the new ones that walk in the door.

When I was a regular employee, I was trapped, if I got saddled with a shit boss I was screwed. Mostly because I had, and still have to some extent, poor coping skills and just can't take marching orders from a incompetent boss. This made me either the top ranked or bottom ranked employee in a department, depending who the boss was.

If you can't be self employed, at least start to sock away a good chunk of cash and try to stay out of debt. Having liquid cash at your disposal lets you take risks, like challenging shitty bosses, without stressing that if you lose you will become homeless.

Thank you for asking Sir. I am honored.

I'm back. It wasn't just a heart attack. Much worse, progressed into paralysis of my left side; 9 months in bed and almost total loss of muscle mass, excruciating pain for months on end. My wonderful body dissolved into mush. Watching my kids shudder and cry every time they saw me. Horror.

Finally found a solution, and then 18 months of therapy (which I had to design for myself, since the doctors were so fucking useless) to walk again.

I promised the universe that if I could just walk again, get out of that bed, I would do anything, pay anything, do any job with gratitude, down to the lowest janitorial job. I still feel that way. Although, I will still never work for a woman boss again.
