Great point. The minute you don't respect the mountain, that's when it gets you. Especially big mountains like Everest. Going there to prove that vegans can do everything is just bullshit.

I worked last season with a vegan, was cold all the time and pretty low energy, lazy and a shit attitude too. Part of this must be due to diet.

Respect ALL mountains! Even the 1,000M peaks in the UK.

Here people die every year, especially in the Scottish highlands in winter. We can have sudden changes of weather, white outs, disorienting fogs, high winds and in the winter, snow cornices on ridges. Even the Scottish highlands demand respect!

But with the 8,000M peaks, you have not only altitude to contend with but also the death zone. Above 8,000 M due to the lack of oxygen the body cannot repair itself, sleep properly or even digest food properly. You are literally dying slowly over 8.000M.

Of all the mountains where climbers have lost their lives, Everest likely carries the highest risk of coming across bodies simply because there are so many. Right from there I cannot fathom a pampered, paper-pusher princess having what it takes to stomach that sight in the real world.

Human beings simply aren’t built to function at that cruising altitude. The air is so thin that even with supplemental oxygen every minute that you spend above 26,000 feet, or the "Death Zone" you’re basically dying. The human brain becomes confused and even small movements require superhuman efforts.



Not every one, even strong experienced climbers, are cut out to tackle something in this realm. It is practiced by those who have studied the mountains, learned the peculiarities of altitude, payed their dues, sacrificed, rejoiced and basically earned a right to climb a mountain of this caliber.

How could it be that this woman thought she had the qualifications to climb it?

I get she climbed some of the seven summits before, but comparing Denali or Kilimanjaro to Mount Everest is like comparing peanuts to melons. While a Denali expedition usually lasts around three to four weeks in length, Everest expeditions take more than two months.

This dumb broad thought that by virtue of being "Dr" and a vegan in a mission to disprove the evil carnivore men she could do everything she wants to, just like getting that degree the government must likely helped her achieve in the female centric educational system.

By the way I do not even agree she should even be called a Dr, as she is just a finance lecturer and from where I am from the term is very respected and granted to physicians that strictly save lives, but I digress.



So she put herself in a situation of great, great risk, which most likely seemed like just another bureaucratic process in her head (you need permits, deposits, guides, transportation, passports) because of gurrl power propaganda and, but MOST importantly, she would get the attention and word of praise from other women on social media with her selfies at the peak, just like she did in Denali.




And don't even get me on the fact she is Australian! Those woman basically rejoice on the fact they are masculine. Forget about motherhood and femininity. No wonder she died child-less. Bravo! She effectively removed her selfishness from the gene-pool, only pity is she was actually kinda cute and reminded me a little bit of

Acclimation is no B.S. on Everest. Vegan or not. Unless you've lived most your life between 6k-15k ft. elevation, climbing skills and knowledge aside, this is an attrition quest.

Most of the deaths on Everest are related to unexpected turns in the weather, shooting the pass with just slightly bad timing, and above all, elevation acclimation inadequacies. A huge factor is, physiology aside, if your mind can even work right when you get above 23k or so. Everest is no place for girly girls, yolo clowns, "empowered" women, et al.

It's really something you want to prepare, acclimate, and train for for years in advance. Also, not something to try when you're too young, or too old. Her age was probably about right. Blood testing, all sorts of shit should be done at the last base camp before the final 8k feet, and I doubt that is always done properly.

Part of your training should be extreme temperature training too.

I mellowed out on the aggressively anti-veganism thing after watching a lot of durian rider. he knows how to troll gymbro PED users quite well, and is funny as fuck.

With veganism, I think it probably does lengthen people's lives but they don't have the strength, vibrancy or non gaunt cheeks that meat eaters have.

The great title is an important factor. It simply states the fact, but somehow it's just hilarious. It's especially hilarious when people gets triggered over it.

For people who said this has nothing to do with veganism, fact is, she wanted to prove that vegans aren't weak. This means she believed that she was strong, and and that veganism made her strong. That's what she believed and wants to do prove, that's the cause of her action, which resulted in her death - so that's what made this story having to do with veganism.

On a serious note. Everest is only the highest cemetery because of how high it is. No one is carrying a body down at that altitude. There are way more dangerous mountains in Himalays. Mont Blanc for example, in France, kills lots of people.

Even more interesting is "trash on Everest." The place has been turned into a landfill.

The topic of this thread should be a great feat that a woman tries to accomplish --CLIMBING MT EVEREST -- for hell sake-- but failed in her attempt -- despite being a experienced mountain climber with a impressive track record.

But like trash tabloids all the attention is going on about veganism.

Btw, I chose a vegetarian life style for about 30 years now -- influenced at first by the Beatles and then many other great thinkers. I definitely feel I made the right choice. I power walk half a marathon usually once a week and often go to the gym. There are a host of other good reasons but if one is truly interested the information is out there.

Perhaps Veganism goes a bit too far. And yes I agree there are a lot of delusional vegans - which attracts a lot of nutcases and especially radical feminists. I don't know why that it is the case. Still the core thinking behind veganism and animal issues comes primarily from masculine academic thinking men. Only recently the radical feminists and other delusional nutcases have been taking over.

However, 75% of my decision to go vegetarian was ethical. The fact is the world is destroying the environment at a rapid rate -- and the number factor is meat production.

If the world is going to survive, meat production needs to be reduced by almost 80% if not more. One has as ethical responsibility to future generations.

A good documentary that recently came out about the environmental problems caused by meat production is called Cowspiracy.

Few will look this up and prefer the tabloid approach, but the ones who do will likely have a better appreciation for the ethics behind vegetarian/vegan choice of life style.

I had no idea how big a deal Mt. Everest is or was. The place is literally a graveyard of mummified bodies. That David Sharp controversy (which is covered in that documentary) has intrigued me even more. I have not really come to my own conclusions on if those climbers were wrong not to rescue him or leave him, but the whole situation is rough. Lots of ethical weighing there.

No fucking way!!! Are you serious? Is it possible to climb a mountain like that without climbing any other smaller ones first? How is that possible? Do you need to be somewhat near a world class athlete's level to pull it off or something similar? Could your average NFL or NBA player climb that thing without prior training?

Also, I noticed via Wiki and watching these documentaries on it, that some people are capable of climbing it without an oxygen tank. How is that possible when the pressure is so low to begin with? Correct me if I am wrong but wouldn't oxygen percentages be so low that the air is actually poisonous to breathe? Don't tell me they just hold their breath or some rhythmic breathing technique, because my head would explode. After reading about Wim Hof though, maybe not...

In order to climb the mountain you need a permit from either China (to climb from the northern side) or Nepal(from the south). Most people opt for the southern route. Permits are expensive, running many thousands of dollars. There are many guided tour companies. With them, all you have to do is show up with the equipment on the shopping list they provide you with, and they cover the rest. They get the permit, Sherpas, food logistics, shelter logistics, fix the ropes and ladders, etc. You just show up and do what they tell you when they tell you to do it. That will cost you a minimum of $50K. The alternative is to not spend the money, and go at it bare bones. You pay $10K to get on someone's permit, and you have minimal support. David Sharpe did that ten years ago. IIRC, he's still up there and has been spooning with green boots ever since. His death caused quite a stir about the callous attitudes up there and how people will ignore climbers in distress and clearly dying.

Just the cost alone is a roadblock for many people. But that cost also opens the door to the wealthy who do this as a way to one up their friends. Imagine some woman who married well. She's in her 40s. She's got money. One day she posts on her facebook a picture of the airstrip in Nepal. "Starting my big Everest adventure today. YOLO bitches. We'll do Chella VIP next year." To this her 9000 friends and beta orbiters reply "you go grrrl!!!"

A lot of people die trying to climb Everest - and many, many more way less daunting mountains as well.

As Phil619sd pointed out, humans are not meant for such extreme altitudes. Vegan or meat eater, that high up our default is to die. Surviving is a feat.

The fact that it was even possible that she could attempt this climb likely has to do with the business side of climbing Everest.

By way of money it's possible to get an excellent guide, a ton of supplies and a small army of sherpas to help carry all of it up the mountain. Jon Krakauer goes into this subject in "Into thin air".

Paying a pretty penny for the ticket up and having their hands held all the way to the top, some climbers artificially enhance their climbing skills - all they have to do is (try to) drag their bodies to the top. Don't get me wrong, it's a hard task. But the outcome is an inevitable arrogance that may cost their lives - again, see Krakauer's book on the 1996 expedition, which resulted in 8 deaths, of both clients and guides.

This thread reminds me a lot of a thread a while back where a single, depressed thirty-something woman commited suicide. Some members were rejoicing in her death like it was the best news they heard all day.

It goes without saying that this forum has a lot of fascinating men who always come through with great information, but there’s a general pessimism and – as BB pointed out – dark desire to fit everything into a certain narrative that is depressing.

Women need to stay in the kitchen; if you’re a girl over 30 with no kids you might as well die a horrible death; every single vegan in a weak simp; and so on. Some members’ lack of compassion towards other humans is gruesome. I wonder if this is just internet chest thumping or if they’re like that in real life.

RIP to the climber woman. Like so many men, a victim of her own ego and of pushing too hard into something she was probably too inexperienced to attempt.
