What can never happen no matter what is an implosion of law and order. If that happens then you are left in a Taliban/war lord/Mad Max kind of world where the biggest armed group kills and survives or everything is just gang-wars fighting each other until there is nothing more left to fight over.

Life has always been cheap in South America.

Europe, Russia and the US have a long standing tradition of government. In the absence of an authority they typically wait for a new one to arrive on the basis that any government is better than no government.

For whatever reason, South Americans seem prone to a "fuck everyone who isn't me" attitude. Coupled with excellent crop growing conditions in most areas there is absolutely a culture of laziness among them which is ironically fertile ground for the seeds of socialism to be planted.

What arrives now has arguably been inevitable for a long time. As the government fails to provide, laziness gives way to the "fuck everyone who isn't me" mentality and by next Tuesday you have the collapsing Aztec cannibal empire all over again.

Tropical regions where food can literally fall from trees all year around compared to regions where winter causes shortage of food and forces planning lest starvation occur creates people with different temperaments. Europe,Russia and the US belong in the latter category where regions experience cold and Latin America belongs in the former category.

Also it appears that cold regions may necessitate high-trust societies to survive since those societies that come from cold regions seem to be high-trust.

Quote:Venezuela would pull its highest denominated, 100-bolivar bill (which is worth about two U.S. cents on the black market), from circulation over the next 72 hours, ahead of the introduction of new, higher-value notes, as large as 20,000.

"I have decided to take out of circulation bills of 100 bolivars in the next 72 hours," Maduro said. "We must keep beating the mafias."

I can confirm this to be true. I cross posted this from the other Venezuela thread/

The Venezuelan girl I met in Panama is back home for a month. Her first time home in a year.

She has Whatsapp'd me a few times this week. I snipped some stuff from our convo below.

Quote:
"Ahora Venezuela esta loca. Aqui esta mal. La situacion no hay efectivo bloqueron las salidas del pais por 30 dias y segun intervinieron el banco banesco. Los billetes de 100 pero no hay efectivo en la calle"

Can't export currency for 30 days. I am sure it will last longer. The second part I think she is saying that the no one is accepting the 100 boliviar notes. Is that correct?

Now Venezuela is crazy, here is bad. The situation there is not cash exits from the country are blocked for 30 days and according to innervation from the Banesco bank. There are not 100 bolivares bill in the street.

She must be referring to this
Quote:Maduro announced the change in currency in early December. The 100 bolívar bill was to be replaced by six new denominations worth between 500 and 20,000 bolívars to reflect the plummeting value of the currency. Between December 13-15, Venezuelans were ordered to return their 100 bolívar bills to banks and promised they would receive valid currency in exchange, including a 100 bolívar coin, but the larger denomination bills have yet to arrive.

That's mainly because they were settled by the Spanish. Spain hung onto absolute monarchy too long; by the time they'd decided it might be a good idea to have a bicameral legislature, the British Empire was romping its way across the world. They're too ingrained to the idea of seesawing between royal-style strongmen and peasant revolts down that way as a result.

Good example of this is the influence of USA on Latin America, Geographically speaking Argentina and Chile are very separate from USA but have a very high Human Development Index, in contrast Mexico and Cuba are very next to USA but their situation is not as good. There is not reason besides corruption Mexico is not like Canada.

Another example is Haiti and Dominican Republic, two countries sharing the same island but have total different socioeconomic situations.

I don't believe it has been like this throughout history - Before the mid 20th Century.

We have international trade of food which see's countries from afar grow crops and they end up in many other countries through modern transport.

Only the Romans had a similar setup but by no means was it perfect and suffered with rioting and wars.

The big difference today is the number of mouths to feed. I've no idea how many live in South America but the more there are the bigger the need. When the food system breaks down you have all of these people looking for food and becoming desperate.

A picture I saw once had the food chain of animals we normally ate; Cows, sheep, goats etc. Then horses and then pets. The captions were to explain how desperate people became. Ended with "Apocalypse"..people Laugh

RE: Venezuela is collapsing
^ Animals invariably end up becoming starvation food because by the time your society is in that kind of state you're not in a position to go and harvest corn before processing it in a proper manner.

"A dog! Shoot it!" *bang* "Today we eat!"

For a similar reason and despite the protestations of hippies, cows and sheep will never be replaced by soybeans and lentils even if the protein yield is higher per acre under crops than cows because the cows can range around and eat all sorts of plants grown in rocky areas through to swamps, and when the time comes to harvest the cows you simply round them up and truck them to the slaughterhouse (or your shed if you're homesteading).

The nomadic shepherd was a historic figure for a long time for precisely this reason. Farming crops only works where you have a reliable degree of law and order. The second the farmers stop planting for any reason then your society is truly screwed.

In parts of South and Central America, while they do not suffer snowy winters, you could not grow plants all year long. Winter is winter, with or without snow. That is why in the pampas here in Argentina you have planting, growing and harvesting seasons. This part of the continent is not a mythical breadbasket.

While I agree with you on this comment. You did say only parts of South and Central America and the fact that deficits can be made up by trade in the same region. So while there would be more greater relative famine it is no where near as much as the regions where snowy winter occurs.

As well as the fact that cold does seem to have other effects that forces high-trust societies and higher intelligence as well as greater resourcefulness.

Also another good additional explanation is that recent dependency on welfare and their adaptation to an urban environment have caused them to lose skills and knowledge that would allow them to grow food fairly easily in this region

Catholicism is a collectivist organisation and therefore falls into step with whatever other collectivist organisations it can negotiate good deals with.

Add to that the "being charitable with other people's money" bit and socialism becomes their natural bedfellow.

Russia is very cold, and it is not a high trust society, and neither is Ukraine, another very cold country. I've never looked into the societies of the natives that inhabited Canada and the colder, far reaches of South America, but I'd be surprised if every one of their societies was a high trust society.

As far as higher intelligence and resourcefulness, the Germanic tribes up north, as well as the Natives of the Arctic, had built no civilizations of size while the warmer areas of Italy, Greece, Egypt, Persia, and India had already done so.

The very means by which we're communicating right now, writing, was invented by people from your so-called lower-IQ warmer climes, not once, but twice, at least, independently:

Various peoples have been "ahead" at various points in the game, sometimes in warmer climes, sometimes in colder climes, for reasons probably far too complex for any one person to understand, and that's even if we had all the data available on which to come upon a conclusion, which we don't, much of it is lost to the sands of time.

It's just much more complex than your "cold makes high trust, higher IQ, more resourceful societies" assertion.

RE: Venezuela is collapsing
There are probably hundreds of factors that allow an advanced civilisation to occur, and you just have to tick enough boxes, not necessarily all boxes.

In early times a warmer climate would be necessary to have the grain surplus required to fund any form of scientific and academic pursuit.

As more northern regions advanced their cold-region farming techniques they would have gained access to that surplus while retaining the culture of careful planning that allowed them to survive in a more hostile environment.

Of course that's all just a hypothesis.

As Spaniard says, it's difficult verging on impossible to explain how an advanced society can crop up in one place and not in another. It could all come down to one freakishly smart aberrant (or bloodline) born in the right place at the right time, who might never have been recorded in the history books for any number of reasons.

Current white nationalist academics would be at a loss to explain the Aztecs, Mayans, etc. By their theories, no such civilisation could occur, alien intervention aside.

Hey man, if we remove Ireland, we'll have zero majority Catholic countries in the top rank, unless Monaco and the Vatican are allowed. Then there's Spain, Portugal, and Italy, but they've got their issues too.

RE: Venezuela is collapsing
One extreme and underappreciated benefit of a Trump presidency is that we won't have to worry about these idiots swamping the US as part of a "Venezuelan refugee crisis".

RE: Venezuela is collapsing
Montesquieu already debated this weather thing in the spirit of laws. It´s nonsense. You can´t explain Ukraine and Australia. Even Russia is colder and less developed than Portugal and Spain.

There´s a multitude of factors. But in my opinion the determining factor of the decline of the southern countries began with the Alhambra edict. The Sephardi jews the best crop of jews (their nobility) were expelled and went to Amsterdam. From Amsterdam Cromwell invited them to England. And with the jews went their trade skills.

Problem I see with the jews is they are only beneficial in the beginning when they are settling into a new country/host.

After a while, when they become settled become a entropy for this country and are expelled again.

It´s no wonder Portugal and Spain signed a bill giving nationality directly to any sephardi jew descendant. The requirements to get this nationality is simply a certification from a synagogue.
