These books are listed with the assumption that you want a general view of economics for beginners without learning about any specific economic issue. I have read them unless stated otherwise so I can vouch for their quality.

These two books listed below are good if you want refutations of common economic myths.

Economics in One Lesson: The Shortest and Surest Way to Understand Basic Economics by Henry Hazlitt

Excuse Me, Professor: Challenging the Myths of Progressivism by Lawrence W. Reed, Ron Robinson

These five give a broader view of the economics:

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Capitalism by Robert P. Murphy

Lessons for the Young Economist by Robert P. Murphy

Common Sense Economics: What Everyone Should Know About Wealth and Prosperity by by James D. Gwartney, Richard L. Stroup, Dwight R. Lee

Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell

Economics for Real People: An Introduction to the Austrian School by Gene Callahan

These three are economic treatise. If you read one of these, you'll have a better understanding of economics than 95% of the population, including many economists.

Capitalism: A Treatise on Economics by George Reisman

Human Action by Ludwig von Mises

Man, Economy, and State by Murray N. Rothbard

I am reading Capitalism and it is quite long yet it is amazing. You might want to start with Human Action or Man, Economy and State since those may be shorter reads, even though those books are over 1,000 pages long. I haven't read those two yet so I cannot offer much commentary.

You can also look at some blogs. My favorite one is Cafe Hayek. It is easy to read for the lay person, unlike many other economics blogs, and it discusses subjects I think the average person cares about.
